Untold stories of the Apollo 13 engineers

Late on 13 April 1970, the night shift had started in Houston’s Manned Spaceflight Center. Engineers tried to sift through reams of odd data coming about the Apollo 13 spacecraft, from instrument readings to the confused reports from three astronauts. It looked like they were rapidly losing their oxygen supply. “First of all, we thought we’d boil it down to something simple and obvious,” engineer Arnold Aldridge recalled later. He made a phone call to an especially insightful young engineer, Joh...

Inland Empire housing at high risk to coronavirus fallout, by this math

The Inland Empire housing market is among the nation’s least-capable of withstanding coronavirus fallout, one ranking suggests. Analysts at Attom Data Solutions graded U.S. counties for their housing market’s financial stability based on three metrics: affordability (share of local incomes needed to buy a home takes); equity (how many homeowners were “underwater” — where the mortgage is larger than the home’s value); and payment-making abilities (foreclosure activity measured by filings as a sha...

Whicker: Michael Brockers seems destined to be a Ram for life

Mike Napoli was the Angels’ catcher until Jan 21, 2011. Then he spent four days with the Toronto Blue Jays, not even long enough to distinguish Celsius from Fahrenheit. The Blue Jays dealt him to Texas and got Frank Francisco. The Angels, in one of Arte Moreno’s more noteworthy splurges, got Vernon Wells. The moral: Some players need to just stay put. Michael Brockers spent 11 days under the impression that he would be the next defensive end of the Baltimore Ravens. The St. Louis Rams had drafte...

Retired Gattis: '17 Astros 'cheated baseball, fans'

Evan Gattis fought to win a World Series ring with the Houston Astros and got one in 2017. Gattis was with the Astros for their historic run, which since has been disgraced by revelations of a sign-stealing scheme that cost general manager Jeff Luhnow and manager AJ Hinch their jobs and a one-year ban from baseball. The repercussions swept up two other managers -- the New York Mets fired Carlos Beltran and the Boston Red Sox parted with Alex Cora -- who were part of the scheme in Houston in 20...

Angels Q&A: Could the team lose a year of Anthony Rendon’s deal?

While waiting to see if and when the coronavirus shutdown will end and the MLB season will begin, we took some Angels questions via Twitter on Wednesday. If no season is to be played does (Anthony) Rendon have just six years left on the contract? Or seven still? I’m assuming six since Betts will be free agent this offseason. Sucks to be Dodgers if that happens. — @mattyball71 Anthony Rendon’s contract covers the 2020 to 2026 seasons, specifically, so if there is no 2020 season, the Angels simply...

COVID-19 is no excuse to bail out urban transit

Among the many special interest groups lining up for a share of the trillion-dollar bailout bills is the transit industry. Transit agencies are demanding that Congress give them at least a $25 billion bailout. New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) alone wants a $4 billion bailout. Transit, however, neither needs nor deserves a bailout. It doesn’t need it because it already gets two-thirds of its operating costs from taxpayers, so it could cut service by a third and keep operatin...
