Behold The World’s Largest Collection Of Magazines

“[James] Hyman’s collection now stands at around 150,000 editions of roughly 5,000 titles. They form the bulk of HYMAG, a dedicated magazine library housed in a former factory in Woolwich, south-east London. It’s an overwhelming sight. … It is not just the words that are important, Mr. Hyman stresses, but what surrounds them: the advertisements, the page layouts, the typography and all the other marginalia that have been lost as text has transitioned to the internet.” – The Economist

Maple Leafs News & Rumors: Campbell, Andersen, Spezza & Hyman

Last night against the Calgary Flames, it was time for the Toronto Maple Leafs to give backup goalie a start. First, he was returning from an injury and this was the first game he had been cleared to play. Second, his body of work this season has been solid: in his last game prior to sitting out with his injury, he had thrown a 4-0 shutout against the currently-tied-for-first Edmonton Oilers. Third, Frederik Andersen was still suffering from an injury himself and wasn’t able to play. Related:...

Hockey Notes With Your Coffee

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun, - ...The Leafs, not even halfway through the season, playing a limited schedule in a limited division, look like one of the best teams in the NHL. How that translates to playoffs and then crossover playoffs will be determined later. The chore for Shanahan and Dubas now is to take advantage of the greatest opportunity they’ve ever had in management. This is a shrunken season of possibilities. Hundreds of startups go public every year. Only 20 have ever been founded and led by women.

Katrina Lake is the founder and chief executive of Stitch Fix. She is one of just 20 women who have led a startup through to an initial public offering. Katrina Lake/Facebook Each year since the New York Stock Exchange was founded, in 1817, hundreds of companies have gone public. Only 20 have been founded and led to an IPO by women. There are many reasons women and minorities have been held back. Among them: Fewer than 13% of all VC decision-makers are women, and flow to companies led on...

How New York's iconic Katz's Deli mastered nostalgia to maintain its cult following for 132 years - and get away with a $23 pastrami sandwich

Little has changed since brothers Morris and Hyman Iceland founded the deli in 1888. Courtesy Katz's Deli New York's iconic Katz's Deli hasn't changed much since opening its doors in 1888. Current owner Jake Dell, whose grandfather took over the business in 1988, says leaning into New York Jewish, Kosher-style culinary nostalgia is the secret to its long-lasting legacy. A Light Night Of Hockey Notes

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun, - Zach Hyman becomes a free agent at the end of the next NHL season and the Leafs are in a challenging position with the gritty winger. If they sign him before the end of the season, they must protect him in the Seattle expansion draft. If they don’t sign him, they don’t have to protect him, but Hyman could choose to go elsewhere. The right move is to sign Hyman early. - Two weeks ago, I was told the NHL would play a 60-game season. Last week I w...

Maple Leafs News & Rumors: Tortorella, Keefe & Curious Coaching Calls

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ season didn’t end as it was supposed to. That leaves a lot of questions about the team’s future. Outside of the small group of very expensive players who carried most of the offense during the regular season, but who seemed snake-bit around the net during their play-in series against the Columbus Blue Jackets (save for one sweet burst in five minutes at the end of Game 4), is the team’s talent sub-par? Is it time to blow up the roster? Related: Maple Leafs News & Rumo...

Maple Leafs News & Rumors: Hyman, Tavares, Nylander More

I wonder how many writers who covered Game 4 of the Columbus Blue Jackets versus Toronto Maple Leafs play-in series had started writing an article about the Maple Leafs blowing it yet again. Had the game played out as it seemed destined to, the Maple Leafs would have become the fifth team eliminated on a single day. I certainly saw a number of tweets popping up that signaled that the ‘Maple Leafs Season Ends in Disappointment’ or “Blue Jackets Goaltending Proves to Be Too Strong For Leafs.” R...

Maple Leafs News & Rumors: Keefe, Matthews & Spezza’s Leadership

An electric scooter startup will charge you $39 a month so you can keep and use a single scooter to avoid sharing with other people

An electric scooter startup is rolling out a subscription service that will allow users to pay a monthly or annual fee to use and hold onto the same e-scooter. The story behind Rent the Runway’s first check

When Rent the Runway co-founders Jennifer Fleiss and Jennifer Hyman got their first term sheet, it had an exploding clause in it: If they didn’t sign the offer in 24 hours, they would lose the deal. The co-founders, then students at Harvard Business School, were ready to commit, but their lawyer advised them to pause and attend the meetings they had previously set up with other investors. Twelve years later, Rent the Runway has raised $380 million in venture capital equity funding from ...

Alexander: Terry Cannon was a baseball subversive, in the best of ways

If you believe in heaven, just know that it is a quirkier, more passionate and more creative place today. Terry Cannon, a librarian by occupation, a man of many and varied interests and the creator of what Jim Bouton called the “People’s Hall of Fame” in Pasadena’s Baseball Reliquary, lost his battle with bile duct cancer Saturday. He was 67. Baseball was only one of his interests, though the Reliquary and the companion Institute for Baseball Studies at Whittier College were the things for which...
