Lion Forge and Oni Press Plan to Merge

File this under a “wow, never saw that coming” label, similar to the IDW/Top Shelf acquisition news four years ago. The New York Times is reporting that Lion Forge and Oni Press will announce later today that they plan to merge as an example of how “smaller publishers are adopting new business strategies to better compete.” The move, the companies say, will strengthen their library of original comics and graphic novels and help them to leverage their characters on other [...]

"As a podcaster, the 51-year-old Rogan is basically what you’d get if a less-neurotic Marc Maron and a less-manic Alex Jones had a baby who looked like a muscular thumb."

"An enthusiastic, self-deprecating lunk with an abiding fondness for both snake oil and its salesmen, Rogan is funny and friendly and easy to like. His personal politics are a bit hard to nail down. He is not a supporter of President Donald Trump and does not generally host the sorts of overtly political figures who are fixtures on Fox News. 'I go left on everything. Basically except guns,' he said recently, though he is also very clearly a libertarian, at least temperamentally. He reminds me of...

‘Danger Girl’ Movie in the Works from ‘Kick-Ass 2’ Director Jeff Wadlow

Even though Marvel Studios and DC Entertainment have been dominating the comic book movie scene for years now, there are a lot of other comic books out there which might look good on the big screen. One such property is in the works from Constantin Films. Danger Girl is a comic book from IDW Publishing which focuses on Abbey Chase, described as a champion marksman, virtuoso of languages, scholar of world history, and a heart-stopping femme fatale. But she’s also a treasure hunter with a knack f...

More IDW Leadership Turnover, Company Lost Millions Last Year

IDW continues to struggle with leadership. CEO and founder Ted Adams was replaced last summer by Kerry McCluggage, a TV executive. Now he’s left after 7 months. The new CEO of parent company IDW Media Holdings is Howard Jonas, Chairman (and the company’s biggest stockholder). The company is also losing a lot of money, most out of its entertainment division. ICv2 has analyzed the company’s delayed fiscal year report for 2018. They lost 36 million dollars last year. Jonas previously [...]

Usagi Yojimbo Leaves Dark Horse

This is a change I was not expecting. Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo is an incredibly long-running, award-winning, wonderfully drawn series about a samurai rabbit in an historical Japan where everyone is an animal. It has been published by Dark Horse since 1996 (although previous runs were put out by Fantagraphics and Mirage in the decade before that). IDW has just announced that, beginning in June, the series will be published by them. Usagi Yojimbo will now be monthly, in full [...]

Are IDW’s Money Problems Delaying Wynonna Earp’s Next Season?

Wynonna Earp was supposed to start shooting season 4 this month, but production has been delayed, with no specific date set. Syfy renewed it at last summer’s San Diego Comic-Con, but speculation at Vulture has it that Money problems at IDW seem to be the cause of the production delay. According to a public filing posted in late December, the company has had to take out some hefty loans, and the filing cites a “need for a cash infusion.” Plus, [...]

‘Ghostbusters’ Meets ‘Transformers’ in a New Crossover Comic Miniseries

In the world of Ghostbusters comics, everyone’s favorite team has already enjoyed a series of crossovers. Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler, and Winston Zeddemore not only met the animated versions of themselves, but they also met Abby Yates, Erin Gilbert, Jillian Holtzmann, and Patty Tolan from 2016’s Ghostbusters: Answer the Call. More recently, the team was also introduced to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and now they’re about to meet another huge franchise. IDW Publishing is brin...

We need disagreeable people to fix our dishonest institutions

Eric Weinstein is a mathematician, economist and managing director of Thiel Capital. In a recent interview with Rebel Wisdom, Weinstein spoke about the origins of the Intellectual Dark Web, and his theory of how our institutions are plagued by an "embedded growth obligation."Disagreeable people, Weinstein says, could help institutions correct themselves. My Favorite Art Books of 2018

74 is the final count for the number of art books I’ve reviewed this year in 2018; a slight dip from the 82 I did last year. Quantity notwithstanding, 2018 was still a fantastic year for those of us who enjoy beautiful art books, with plenty of amazing book releases, and I hope next year will be even better. As we welcome 2019 here’s the round up of my favorite art books of 2018 ( in no particular order ); I hope you’ll find something of interest in the list. Do note that not all the books l...

IDW Names New Leader With Company Ties

This past summer, IDW started changing up its leadership team. The CEO and founder was replaced. The head of the entertainment arm left. Now comes news of more changes: President and Publisher Greg Goldstein is stepping down so that former Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall can return to IDW Publishing as President, Publisher, and Chief Creative Officer. Ryall “will be charged with ongoing creative expansion efforts within the company, as well as continuing to work closely with partners and licensors.”...

Exploring The Intellectual Dark Web (How Far Will It Go?)

Over the past year, the IDW has arisen as a puzzling political force, made up of thinkers who support “Enlightenment values” and accuse the left of setting dangerously illiberal limits on acceptable thought. The IDW has defined itself mainly by diving into third-rail topics like the genetics of gender and racial difference—territory that seems even more fraught in the era of #MeToo and the Trump resistance.
