Distinguishing Language From Dialect.

Søren Wichmann, a Danish linguist, discusses a perennial problem and presents a promising solution; after describing the many ways in which it’s hard to pinpoint the difference between a language and a dialect, he continues: Recently, two major obstacles in distinguishing language from dialect have been overcome. The first is how to measure differences between speech varieties – finding a value for D. In 2008, a number of linguists came together to form the Automated Similarity Judgment Program ...

ISO ideas on how to fit more loaves into oven

ISO ideas on how to fit more loaves into oven Submitted by CelesteU on January 14, 2019 - 8:22am. Seeking good ideas/hacks, etc on maximizing oven output.  I'm presently baking mostly high-hydration loaves in 5-qt dutch ovens in my home gas oven.  I can fit three DO's at once.....I'd love to be able to squeeze more bread into the oven in one pass.  I always get better results in closed-vessel baking.  So, I'm wondering if anyone has a cloche, covered oblong vessel, or other more spa...

Nikon Z6 in-depth analysis: ISO, battery life, focusing and more

Battery problem? Nooo! More than 5,500 pictures. I have read in several places that the battery only allows 300 pictures. This is a complete lie. With a single battery, I am able to shoot more than 5,500 photographs without recharging. All were shot in RAW. I also had activated the stabilizer in normal and sport. Creating Beautifully Executed High-Key Photography

High Key photography is used extensively in fashion, portraiture and increasingly in product photography. Today we’re going to talk a little about what’s required for creating beautifully executed high key photography. Photo by Siyan Ren on Unsplash What Is High Key Photography Back in the early days of photography, film didn’t have a huge range. It couldn’t deal with the pure whites and heavy blacks that we can get today (At least, not in the same frame). Because of this, photographers and ...

Provide power for a camper

I've been thinking of what it will take to live off grid in my NCO Alaskan camper. This is for emergencies only and I will not need any power for AC or heat. It will mostly be for charging electronics and 2 LED lights. I'm thinking of adding a 2nd battery under my truck hood and running power to the back for the camper. I believe I'm going have to get a bigger alternator and ISO cable. Does anyone have this set up? Is it effective? Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

What Camera Settings Should I Use for Landscape Photos?

One of the questions I get asked most often about my landscapes is “What settings did you use?” Beginner photographers often feel that there is some magic combination of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO that will make their photos amazing. While there’s a lot more to it than that, understanding what settings to use makes it easier to take photos that match your vision. Let’s dig in. RELATED: How to Develop a Better Eye for Taking Good Photos What Gear You Need for Landscape Photos Landscape p...

Why Manual Mode Isn’t Always The Best Mode

I’m sure you’ve heard this one a dozen times: professionals shoot in manual mode. It’s true, pros do use manual mode. They also use aperture priority, shutter priority and — dare I say — some might even use program mode from time to time. What people are really trying to say when they say pros shoot manual is that pros shoot exclusively in manual mode. The thing is, most don’t. The idea that manual mode is always the best choice is a myth. Below I will present to you three reasons why man...

Exposure Values Give You a Better Understanding of How Your Camera Works

In photography, we talk a lot about “stops”: it’s the standard measure of exposure where an increase of one represents a doubling of the amount of light hitting the sensor or film. One thing that a lot of photographers don’t realize is that exposure actually has an absolute scale. Let me explain. RELATED: What Is a “Stop” in Photography? Exposure Values and Stops When you learn the basics of the exposure triangle—shutter speed, aperture, and ISO—it’s important to know that there are multiple ...

What Dog Owners Should Know About Microchips

Microchipping was the promise of a permanent identification for the life of a dog. It seemed miraculous -- a subcutaneous bit of glass and electronics, just a little bit bigger than a piece of rice, that  could be linked up to your name, address, phone, Social Security number, web site address, etc. If a dog lost a collar or you changed your address, it would be no problem to check the registry and find Bowser again. If your dog was lost on the opposite side of the country, stolen, or sold on, ...

Clippers enjoy another episode of the Lou Williams show

LOS ANGELES — No, of course they weren’t surprised. The Clippers kept hearing that question Friday night after Lou Williams scored a season-high 36 points to lift his team to a 118-107 victory over the Lakers at a sold-out Staples Center. It was a vintage performance by the slight, 6-foot-1 scoring savant, but even in his 14th year in the NBA, even after a pair of Sixth Man of the Year awards and 12,371 career points, Williams’ ability to weave around and through defenders who are larger, huskie...

Patents Still Issuing Patents Despite No Wall Funding: USPTO operating status during government shutdown

The USPTO has indicated that it “remains in normal operating status” despite the Federal Government funding crisis. The USPTO remains open for business as normal. This is possible because the agency has access to prior-year fee collections, which enables the USPTO to continue normal operations for a few weeks. Should the USPTO exhaust these funds before a partial government shutdown comes to an end, the agency would have to shut down at that time, although a small staff would continue to work to...

Calls for stricter ISO standards of biodiesel in marine fuel

In Germany, the International Union of Marine Insurance said in its December quarterly newsletter that more than 100 vessels have been negatively impacted by biodiesel-contaminated fuel and as a result is calling for stricter ISO standards beyond the current “fit for purpose” stipulation. Currently, it is up to end users to test fuels but the IUMI say that it is time for the marine industry to follow in the footsteps of the aviation and motor industries whereby the responsibility for complying w...
