Yebba Is The Real Deal

You could be forgiven for assuming Yebba is British. The singer born Abbey Smith — her stage name is Abbey backwards — is working in a hip-hop-adjacent retro soul realm that, in the 21st century, has been dominated by English singers like Amy Winehouse, Duffy, and Adele. One listen to “Boomerang,” the most decidedly Winehouse-esque throwback on Yebba’s debut album Dawn, is enough to clue you in to Back To Black producer Mark Ronson’s involvement. But no, Yebba is not from the UK. She’s from Arka...

St. Vincent talks bringing ‘Daddy’s Home’ to Hollywood Bowl as ‘The Nowhere Inn’ film debuts

“Daddy’s Home,” the sixth studio album from St. Vincent, arrived in May, but Annie Clark, the artist behind the stage name, says it hasn’t felt fully finished until now. “A record doesn’t really feel complete to me until I’ve actually played the songs for people and with people in real-time,” Clark says on a recent phone call. “Because you get to see how the energy in the crowd changes. “You get to see, like, ‘Oh, they’re all singing along to that part,’” she says. “You get to know in a real way...

Lucy Dacus, Jack Antonoff Pledge Texas Concert Proceeds To Abortion Funds

Senate Bill 8, also known as the Texas Heartbeat Bill, went into effect in the state of Texas this week. The most extreme abortion ban in the country, the law prohibits abortions after a heartbeat becomes detectable at six weeks and allows private individuals to sue abortion providers for a minimum of $10,000. Many artists have spoken out against the draconian legislation, and some are trying to do something about it.

Lorde’s ‘Solar Power’ Finds a Once-Dark Star Tripping the Daylight Fantastic: Album Review

Happiness is the new depression? You might think so from the sunnier, sexier dispositions of a few of the most celebrated young singers of late. Taylor Swift turned on a dime from the shadowy “Reputation” to the pastel-colored “Lover”; Billie Eilish, while not intending the title “Happier Than Ever” to be a unilateral statement, has […]

Lorde – “Mood Ring”

Lorde’s third album, Solar Power, comes out at the end of this week. We’ve heard two songs from it — the title track and “Stoned At The Nail Salon” — and today we’re getting a third, “Mood Ring.” It’s another Lorde/Jack Antonoff co-write/production and it has vocals from Solar Power‘s coterie of background singers: Phoebe Bridgers, Clairo, and Kiwis Marlon Williams and James Milne.

Lorde Gets Back to the Commune With New ‘Mood Ring’ Video

If you saw Lorde’s “Solar Power” music video earlier this summer and wanted to join whichever commune she was advertising as “a prettier Jesus,” her new “Mood Ring” clip takes us further inside the slightly tongue-in-cheek ashram. The song arrives just three days in advance of the singer’s Jack Antonoff-co-produced “Solar Power” album, which arrives […]

Lorde Pushes Back Against “Insulting” Jack Antonoff Narrative

Next week, Lorde will release her new album Solar Power. She recorded the album with Jack Antonoff, who also produced her last album, 2017’s Melodrama. As a whole lot of people have noticed, Antonoff has been doing a whole lot of work with female pop stars lately, collaborating heavily with Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, and Clairo, among others. But in a new interview with The New York Times‘ Joe Coscarelli, Lorde dismisses the “retro,” “sexist” idea that she’s part of “Jack’s stable.”

Watch St. Vincent Join Jack Antonoff On The Roof Of Electric Lady Studios

Jack Antonoff loves to bring people to the roof of Electric Lady Studios in New York City and make them perform. A few weeks ago, he got Lorde up there to sing her two Solar Power singles. And he recruited St. Vincent to head on up there to help him out with performing a song off his new Bleachers album Take The Sadness Out Of Saturday Night. She popped up for “What’d I Do With All This Faith?” to sing background vocals, though she does background vocals for a different Bleachers track on the ac...

On Bleachers’ ‘Take the Sadness Out of Saturday Night,’ Jack Antonoff Strips Down the Grandiosity: Album Review

Late last year, in the video for “Chinatown,” Jack Antonoff drove from New York to New Jersey, cruising down the turnpike with Bruce Springsteen riding shotgun. Last month, in an “Into the Shadow” live performance, the Bleachers frontman and pop producing titan crossed state lines again, this time in a bus with his touring bandmates. […]

Clairo’s ‘Sling’ Is a Vintage Pop Triumph: Album Review

For all the thousands of words typed and thumbed about singer-songwriter Clairo since her 2017 song “Pretty Girl” went viral, it’s astonishing — and just as astonishingly unsurprising — how few of them actually focus on her music. Even when people are writing specifically about her songs and albums — including this remarkable latest one, […]

Why Sparks has spent 50 years making famous fans of Beck, Neil Gaiman, ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic and more

By Dan DeLuca There’s a scene in “The Sparks Brothers,” director Edgar Wright’s movie about the hugely influential art-pop duo Ron and Russell Mael, in which the siblings are asked why they had never before agreed to do a documentary film about their fabulously unpredictable 50-year-plus career. “We didn’t want to do the standard documentary full of talking heads,” says Ron Mael, the brother with the mustache who’s the band’s principal songwriter. His singing sibling Russell concurs: “It would b...

Olivia Rodrigo’s Album Has a Taylor Swift Co-Write, Though They Didn’t Actually Collaborate

The mere release of credits rarely causes such a stir, but a minor level of hysteria erupted in two different fan camps Thursday when it was revealed that Olivia Rodrigo’s imminent album, “Sour,” includes a song co-credited to Taylor Swift and her writing partner Jack Antonoff. St. Vincent Brings the Sounds of the ’70s Home on a Mellower, Emotionally Richer ‘Daddy’s Home’: Album Review

For St. Vincent, “home” is a relative thing; she doesn’t often touch exactly the same base, musically, and no one will ever accuse her of making the same album twice. So if you loved the exquisitely visceral, electronic tension of 2017’s “Masseduction” and its nearly operatic art-rock heights, prepare for something entirely on “Daddy’s Home.” […]

Taylor Swift Turns on a Facsimile Machine for ‘Fearless (Taylor’s Version)’ and Its Ingenious Recreations: Album Review

There is no “best actress” award at the Grammys, perhaps for obvious reasons, but maybe there should be this coming year. And the Grammy would go to… Taylor Swift, for so persuasively playing her 18-year-old self in “Fearless (Taylor’s Version),” her beyond-meticulous recreation of the 2008 recording that did win her her first album of […]
