Counterbalance No. 3: Nirvana's 'Nevermind'

Klinger: So why is Nevermind number three on this scientifically-verified list of the Greatest Albums of All-Time? In the end, I think it comes down to three factors: 1. The cultural shift that the album represents, as detailed above. Sure, Nevermind made the world safe for countless wallet-chained flannel enthusiasts, but it also changed the culture. Not many albums can say that. 2. Critics do want to sound relevant, and Nirvana gave them an album that was the right mix of noise and hoo...

Banning factory fire could spark ‘Vinylgeddon’ album stall

A “catastrophic” fire Feb. 6 that devastated a Banning manufacturing plant could have a chilling effect on vinyl album production. Apollo Masters makes lacquer that smooths master discs, the templates used to press vinyl copies. With its factory and warehouse on Lincoln Street virtually destroyed, some industry insiders fear a lacquer shortage will disrupt the supply chain. In a statement on Apollo Masters’ website, the fire was described as having caused “catastrophic damage.” “We are uncertain...

An Aging Hipster’s Top 50 Albums of 2019

As society hurdles ass over ears into the smog congested, plastic particle infested, fact contested, crap basket of incivility, we can at least take solace in the fact it was a mighty good year for new music.  My year-in-review list of albums is a bit different than most. I’ve limited mine to albums I actually OWN on CD — there are countless more I streamed online, but these are the ones I stepped up and put a ring on at the cash register.  Event Of The Year: The Prince Estate Opens The Gate...

Jack White uses the House on the Rock in a music video.

The House on the Rock is a fantastic Wisconsin tourist attraction in Spring Green. Also in Spring Green is Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin, which is the height of elite, revered architecture. The House on the Rock is the bad-taste, pop-culture counterpart. From Wikipedia:[T]he inspiration for the house [allegedly arose] in a meeting between Alex Jordan Jr. and Frank Lloyd Wright, at some unspecified time between 1914 and 1923. Jordan Sr. supposedly drove with [his friend Sid] Boyum to Taliesin to s...

Jack Black And Jack White’s Collab HAS A RELEASE DATE

YEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS Jack Black and Jack White have a few things in common. They both have two kids, neither of them is actually named Jack (yep — Jack White’s name is James and Jack Black’s name is Thomas. It’s true, we’ve all been lied to), and they’re both musicians. That’s pretty much where their similarities end. White takes himself probably more seriously than anyone else on the planet, Black is all jokes, White has an extensive antique collection and no one is allowed to film i...

Cover Songs As A Marketing Asset

For developing artists, cover songs can be an incredibly valuable marketing asset. Instantly recognizable hits or cult classics can help bridge the divide between an artist and a potential fan who might be otherwise unfamiliar with the artist's material. _______________________ Guest post by Jake Udell of Art of Manager Cover songs seem to be an underutilized marketing asset for developing artists. They have instant familiarity. If you take a song and flip it in an entirely new dire...
