German court ruled Tesla's touchscreen windshield wiper controls are the same as texting while driving (TSLA)

Tesla's touchscreen windshield wiper controls are the same as using a phone while driving, a German court said in March. The case stems from a 2017 wreck which landed a driver with a fine and license suspension, and regained attention when a local blog published details of the ruling in late July and US media picked it up this week. Usually, the wipers are automatic, but manual speed controls exist on the cars central control system.  Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. A 2017...

BMW’s feature subscription service is anti-consumer rubbish

Yesterday, Bavarian automaker BMW announced that it’s going to start offering some vehicle features as paid for options as part of its in-car “connected” services. In the future, BMW drivers could be able to add features to their vehicle as and when they please, by purchasing options — like cruise control and heated seats — from BMW through the vehicle‘s ConnectedDrive store or the “My BMW App.” It’s not gone down well If you needed convincing that this is probably a terrible idea, read this pie...

Here's what the world's cheapest electric car is like to drive

We've been following along with Jalopnik's Jason Torchinsky's adventure in buying the world's cheapest electric car from China (the sticker price was $1,000, but after shipping and various fees it ended up costing about three times that). In this video, he takes his brand new Changli for its first drive, during a rainstorm, no less. It immediately got stuck in mud but after that, he got it on the road and had a fun spin. The major issue is that it is very slow. "Like all of my experiences wi...

Elon Musk says the Tesla Model S is the first EV to get a 400-mile range rated by the EPA. Here's how the company did it.

The Tesla Model S Long Range Plus achieved an EPA-rated 402-mile range on a single charge, according to a company blog post. To achieve this, Tesla reduced the car's weight and maximized regenerative braking. Last month, Elon Musk claimed the EPA's original 391-mile range rating was the result of improper testing. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. Range, it seems, is a big deciding factor for folks when it comes to picking the right electric vehicle. On Monday, Tesla announc...

Alibaba is overflowing with cheap mail-order electric cars — and I want them all

Tesla CEO Elon Musk often tweets about how you can order one of his vehicles online in just a few minutes. Many other well-known brands are following suit with this distance selling model, but Musk is far from the first to sell a car online. Alibaba has been selling mail-order cars for ages — electric ones at that. Last week, Jason Torchinsky, senior editor over at Jalopnik, did an unboxing of the Changli, a low-cost tiny yet deceivingly spacious all-electric car that cost around $1,200. You can...

Watch: Unboxing a $1,000 mail order electric car from China

China makes and consumes more electric vehicles than any other nation in the world. It just so happens to make some of the most bizarre ones too. The good folks over at Jalopnik, an online motoring magazine, have given us a look behind the curtain with one of their latest videos. In it, they unbox what is apparently world’s cheapest new car. The all-electric Changli — no, I’d never heard of it either. Jason Torchinsky, Jalopnik’s senior editor, has the pleasure of unveiling the unique ride and, ...

"I bought the cheapest new car in the world" for $930 on Alibaba

Jalopnik's Jason Torchinsky bought his first new car on Alibaba. He paid $930 for the electric Changli NEMECA, batteries not included. The batteries, likely lead-acid, were an additional $350. Then came all the fees to bring the car from China to the USA and get it through customs. The final total for the car is closer to $3,300 which is still less expensive than the comparison vehicle: a golf cart. From Jalopnik: What’s frustrating and amazing about all of this is just how difficult it...

The illegal things that unscrupulous auto dealers do to close a sale

Very few people enjoy the process of buying a new or used car from a dealer. ("Let me check with my sales manager." "How much can you afford per month? I'll make it work.") But while those tactics are obvious and annoying, some dealers will run schemes that are downright illegal just to close the sale. Over at Jalopnik, professional car shopper Tom McParland reveals some of those activities as reported by two consumer protection attorneys. Here's one thing attorney Steve Lehto says to watch out ...

How to parallel park perfectly "every time"

I consider myself to be a skilled parallel parker, mostly because I spent my younger years driving my mom's 1975 Oldsmobile Delta 88 land yacht. I'm not sure if I follow the steps laid out in this video by Jalopnik's Andrew Collins but his does seem like a methodologically sound approach that's infinitely better than the dreaded "park by touch" technique.
