LeBron James reveals Lakers pitch to summer free agents: ‘They cater to the players’

NEW YORK — In the midst of what threatens to be the worst season of his 16-year career, there’s a particular ray of sunshine for LeBron James that he’s been willing to address. Summer free agency. That should be a familiar oasis to Lakers fans recently, as the franchise prepares to miss the postseason for the sixth consecutive season and undoubtedly will do some roster reshuffling with much of the team on expiring contracts. With salary cap space, the Lakers are expected to hunt for a second sta...

A Florida woman will spend the rest of her life in prison for a cruel form of discipline she inflicted on a helpless little girl. The Pensacola News Journal reports that 66-year-old Veronica Green Posey was sentenced to life in prison Friday (Mar. 15) after jurors convicted her of first-degree felony murder in the death of her 9-year-old cousin.Prosecutors say whenever Dericka Lindsay “misbehaved,” she would suffer horrific beatings from Posey, as well as Lindsay’s adoptive parents, James and Gra...

The Booker Prize-Winner Who Underwent An Exorcism

Marlon James knew he was gay from a young age, but he believed he shouldn’t be, so he underwent an exorcism through his church. “He describes the exorcism process as ‘a kind of mental control’: ‘Back then I thought they were just driving out demons,’ he recalls. James said he was sick multiple times during the ‘cure’: ‘Then one day it hit me: ‘What if I got rid of the church?’ And that worked smashingly.'” – The Observer (UK)

Walton defends LeBron after Knicks defeat

Luke Walton defended LeBron James after the Los Angeles Lakers star faltered in the final quarter of a 124-123 defeat to the New York Knicks on Sunday. James was rested for the loss to the Detroit Pistons on Friday, but made his comeback two days later at Madison Square Garden. James was 4-for-15 from the field in the final quarter, but Lakers head coach Walton said he should not take the blame for a 39th defeat of a miserable season for his side.

Camping & Me

I’m sure I must have camped when I was a kid but, apart from one sleeping-outside occasion when I was about seven which – due to my young and tender age – must have been a planned event and not an accident, I can’t remember camping at all under the age of 22 when I attended my first festival. ( = || []).push({}); Thinking about it now, my lack of camping experiences as a child must have in part had my mother to blame as, although I was on holiday with h...

Pseudo-Faith

It is amazing that we can claim to be followers of Christ and yet take so lightly the words of His servants. For how could we act as we do if we took seriously the admonition of James the servant of God, "My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and ...

As LeBron James rests, Lakers slog through loss to Pistons

Friday’s game in Detroit was as much about who wasn’t in uniform for the Lakers as anything else, with LeBron James, right, joining guards Lance Stephenson, left, and Lonzo Ball, in street clothes for the game against the Pistons. With Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart and Tyson Chandler also out, the Lakers’ roster was extremely thin. "[Michael Jackson] nurtured relationships, including with the boys’ mothers. He spent hours on the phone with James and Wade, he would also call their moms, just to talk to them."

"Jackson also spent time at the Safechucks’ modest home in Simi Valley, Calif. He could have been anywhere in the world, Stephanie Safechuck said, but he chose to be with them. 'He was a son I started to take care for,' Stephanie Safechuck said. 'He would spend the night, I’d wash his clothes.' She said that she once told Jackson that she had prayed for her son’s success in getting into commercials, and that he went on to find success right away. In response, she said, Jackson told her that he h...

Report: Trading LeBron James 'crossed Jeanie Buss' mind' amid Lakers trade talk leaks

Report: Buss wanted to cut ties with Rich Paul Ric Bucher reported on Thursday that the drama around Anthony Davis trade talk at the deadline, plus the leaks believed by some to have come from James' agent Rich Paul, so infuriated Lakers controlling owner Jeanie Buss that the idea of trading James “crossed (her) mind. From Bucher's report. Paul denied to B/R that he leaked the Lakers' interest in Davis, but Buss suspected otherwise and was furious.

LeBron James’ legacy in ‘LeBronto’ is still respected and feared

TORONTO — The North remembers. Coach Nick Nurse freely admits that “we’ve lost a lot of hours of sleep” over LeBron James, the unsolvable problem when he demolished the Raptors three straight postseasons when he played for Cavaliers. His voice had a hint of fatigue in his pregame media session, like someone who has been studying all night for a dreaded exam. “Puts you in every, really, every conceivable combination of pick-and-roll … so your coverages get long and complicated,” Nurse said. “And ...

NY AG: Trump Turned Foundation Into Wing Of His White House Campaign

NEW YORK (AP) — Insider testimony, emails and other evidence show President Donald Trump turned his charitable foundation into a wing of his White House campaign, New York’s attorney general said in a new court filing Thursday. State Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat, detailed her case against the foundation in a 37-page court filing in a lawsuit that seeks $2.8 million in restitution and an order banning Trump and his three eldest children from running any New York charities for 10 y...

Message of His Holiness Pope Francis for the 2019 World Day of Vocations

The courage to take a risk for God’s promise Dear Brothers and Sisters, After the lively and fruitful experience of the Synod devoted to young people last October, we recently celebrated the Thirty-fourth World Youth Day in Panama City.  These two great events allowed the Church to be attentive both to the voice of the Spirit and to the life of young men and women, their questions and concerns, their problems and their hopes. Building on what I shared with the young people in Panama, I would li...

LeBron James says he’s still invested in winning despite Lakers’ cratered playoff hopes

TORONTO — For the second time in less than a week, Michael Jordan was on his mind. LeBron James is often good in Chicago: The Bulls are one of the teams he averages better than 28 points against throughout the course of his career. And it might just have something to do with the reverence with which he regards Chicago’s most famous icon. Many people in United Center feel chills when “Sirius,” Jordan’s theme song, plays in the arena. It’s a safe bet that James is one of them. “Pretty much every t...

The adversarial persuasion machine: a conversation with James Williams

James Williams may not be a household name yet in most tech circles, but he will be. For this second in what will be a regular series of conversations exploring the ethics of the technology industry, I was delighted to be able to turn to one of our current generation’s most important young philosophers of tech. Around a decade ago, Williams won the Founder’s Award, Google’s highest honor for its employees. Then in 2017, he won an even rarer award, this time for his scorching criticism of the ent...

What to Listen to: Outdoor Podcasts

Athletes and Experts Reveal Their Favorite Podcasts In 1851, Henry David Thoreau wrote in his journal about the sounds of the telegraph that had just come to his home of Concord: “We are in great haste to construct a magnetic telegraph from Maine to Texas; but Maine and Texas, it may be, have nothing important to communicate.”   Thoreau would have never fathomed how the dots and dashes of the telegraph he disliked have evolved into our ability today to bring the music and stories of the w...

Whicker: Errol Spence Jr. ready for the Lone Star stage

When Errol Spence Jr. goes to a Dallas Cowboys home game, he’s like everybody else. “I look up and watch it on the big screen,” he said, a little embarrassed. “I went to Canelo’s (Alvarez) fight there. Even on the front row, I was looking up.” AT&T Stadium is 10 years old and still defines, and defies, the imagination. It cost $1.1 billion even then. Spence, the IBF welterweight champion, has practiced the trek from locker room to center stage already. The ringwalk usually throbs to the fighter’...

Wednesday with Michael Spencer: What’s Growing in the Shadow of Anger?

Wednesday with Michael Spencer What’s Growing in the Shadow of Anger? Sometimes someone else’s sins become the light of seeing our own. Several years ago I was working with a particularly difficult young church staff member. His pattern was to do everything his way, and when negative consequences arrived, to be completely defensive. Insight into his own character wasn’t much of an interest. Finding others guilty was. His personal drama usually involved anger and outrage, always featuring his o...

I will be in the postseason again, vows LeBron James

LeBron James might miss out on the NBA playoffs this season but the Los Angeles Lakers forward is confident he will be back in the postseason mix in years to come. James' first year in LA has not gone to plan for the four-time MVP as the Lakers have struggled for consistency and the 34-year-old has struggled with injury. A game-high 36 points from James helped the Lakers snap a five-game losing streak on Tuesday, his efforts crucial in a 123-107 win over the Chicago Bulls.
