Maren Morris Is A Little Bit Springsteen, A Little Bit Teenage Dream

Tucked near the end of Maren Morris' new album GIRL is a lovely little tune called "The Bones." Like many Morris songs, it's not about the art of songwriting but could just as easily be an allegory for her expertise in that area. In "The Bones," a busted old house that has weathered the elements … More »

Playing To Strangers: Why Marketing To People Who Haven't Heard You Is The Most Profitable

In this piece Amber Horsburgh breaks down some interesting streaming statistics suggesting that, contrary to many conventional marketing theories, marketing to listeners who have never heard your music can be a more profitable approach than trying to cultivate a rapid central fanbase. ______________________________ Guest post by Amber Horsburgh. Concert Review: James Blake, Hip-Hop’s Go-To Singer, Warms Up a Chilly Philadelphia Night

With his quavering vocals and math-wiz electronic melodies, James Blake is a pretty unlikely candidate for a hip-hop go-to singer: His high, icy baritone is about as far from rap as one can get. But there he is, collaborating as a singer and co-composer on Jay-Z’s “4:44,” Jay Rock’s “Redemption,” Frank Ocean’s “Blonde,” Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” […]

Jameela Jamil may be at the Grammys to support James Blake, but she's winning the red carpet with her fiery-hot look. From those $10 Etsy earrings to her J. Ireland's Talos Exhibits Sensitive Strength on Sophomore Record 'Far Out Dust'

In Greek myth, the giant automaton Talos was created for the vigilant purpose of defending the island country of Crete. It's a fitting moniker for singer-songwriter-producer Eoin French, a native of Cork, Ireland who possesses a deep appreciation for his island home and for the wondrous natural world which surrounds him. Taking cues from the likes of Jónsi, Jon Hopkins, and James Blake, the cold atmospheres of French's 2017 debut Wild Alee felt as though they were recorded in the coldest of ...

What Are the Chainsmokers Selling with 'Sick Boy'?

The Chainsmokers's Sick Boy owes a lot to Justin Bieber's Purpose, not only in its chipmunk infestation and Axe-scented approach to pop but in how it's meant to be a mea culpa for personal transgressions. Bieber's annus horribilis of abandoned monkeys and egged houses was all but forgotten when he put out a record that was sort of about saying sorry but mostly about his ability to still make vital music. And Andrew Taggart's pop startup is as well-known for its product as for the boorish beh...
