13 Winged Eyeliner Looks That Are Far From Basic

The moment you master winged eyeliner, the classic shape becomes the only thing you want to wear. It's like the first time you learn how to properly cut an avocado, and you instantly transform into a Masterchef — in your mind — and post perfectly plated avocado toast on Instagram every morning. (You go, Glen Coco.) But that black flick can get real old, real fast — and that's when it's time to start challenging yourself. On Instagram, celebrities and makeup pros are always experimenting with dif...

Music Tastes Good festival canceled for 2019

After a three-year run that combined rock star chefs with music stars, the Music Tastes Good Festival is going on hiatus this year. According to the festival website, the multi-day concert founded by late Long Beach musician Josh Fischel will “be taking a pause for the 2019 festival with hopes to return in 2020. “In the meantime we will focus on producing some more intimate events for our fellow food and music lovers,” the statement continued. “It’s become a very crowded music and festival marke...

Link Love: The Met Gala 2019

The theme for this year’s Met Gala, which took place this Monday, was camp. W Magazine delves deeper into the meaning of the word. If you missed the coverage, here’s an overview of what many celebrities wore to the “fashion event of the year.” Janelle Monáe and Michael Urie were two of my favourites. Did you have a favourite look? The Best Camp Culture References on the Red Carpet is worth a look too. Fab Links from Our Members Sal directs us to an article about the effect Marie Kondo is havin...

I've looked through 100+ photos of fashions at the Met Gala so you don't have to.

You can if you want, here.I'm just going to show you Janelle Monáe — my choice for the best:There was a theme, you have to understand. The theme was the old Susan Sontag essay "Notes on Camp" — which you can read in full here. Or here's the explanation in the NYT:In 1964, Susan Sontag defined camp as an aesthetic “sensibility” that is plain to see but hard for most of us to explain: an intentional over-the-top-ness, a slightly (or extremely) “off” quality, bad taste as a vehicle for good art.“No...

‘Lady and the Tramp’ Remake Will Have Janelle Monae Revamp that Problematic Siamese Cat Song

When you hear the title Lady and the Tramp, two things likely come to mind. One is the famous scene where the two dogs share some back-alley spaghetti. The other is “The Siamese Cat Song.” While dogs eating pasta is still perfectly acceptable (in small doses – don’t let your dogs get overweight!), the “Siamese Cat Song” has not aged so well. In fact, it’s quite problematic, to say the least. Disney is about to unleash a new live-action Lady and the Tramp remake for Disney+, and if you were wond...

Janelle Monáe's Hair Was the Highlight of the Met Gala, Don't @ Me

Janelle Monáe only slays red (and, in this case, pink) carpets, so we're not surprised that her Met Gala hair was a delightful surprise. The "Make Me Feel" singer carefully donned four teetering hats, but the look only got better once she turned around. The moment - created by Monáe's longtime hairstylist Nikki Nelms - featured a knee-length braided ponytail decorated with pop-out, red cutout kisses and a gem-encrusted clip - a fresh take on the hair accessory trend. This isn't the first time M...

‘UglyDolls’ Review: The Stitches Are Showing in This Empty, Manufactured Product

When UglyDolls opened with a scene of faceless dolls being manufactured on an assembly line, I wondered if it was being too on the nose. But subtlety, or irony, are not words that exist in the vocabulary of the STX Entertainment CG-animated movie, which produces as many empty platitudes and hollow proverbs about self-love as there are versions of UglyDolls. Directed by Kelly Asbury (Shrek 2, Gnomeo and Juliet), UglyDolls is a movie designed for maximum outreach and replayability. In the ongoing...

26 Protective Styles To Try If You're Transitioning To Natural Hair

When I decided to transition my hair from relaxed to natural over the course of a year or so, I naively thought I could continue my usual lazy-girl routine — which basically consisted of going to the hairdresser and having someone else deal with my head. But, as more and more new growth began to replace my straighter strands, I became concerned about not only the heat damage that might occur in the long run, but the fact that I was relying on somebody else to do all the work. So, I took on the...
