Just a couple months after dropping “Chill Freestyle 2019” together, Long Island legends DJ Gumba & Erick Sermon are back at it with another cut off of Gumba’s upcoming Def Squad mixtape series. Just like the duo’s last offering, the song is produced by The Green-Eyed Bandit himself & the instrumental on this one rings out the funky boom bap sound that he’s known for. Lyrically, the E-Double boasts about his hustle & he does so with a very charismatic tone in his voice. Definitely an exciting...

808 Mafia’s Tarentino Breaks Down the Making of Future’s “March Madness”

Future’s “March Madness” is one of the best rap songs of the decade, and that’s due in no small part to Tarentino’s epic, intergalactic production. In the latest episode of Genius‘ Deconstructed series, the 808 Mafia producer walks us through his creative process behind the beat, talks about the track’s meteor-sized impact (aside from being a Platinum-certified pre-game anthem, it’s one of Kanye’s, J. Cole’s and LeBron’s favorite songs), and explains how the collaboration was written in the ...

Meredith d'Ambrosio in 1981

One of my regrets about my college years in Boston during the 1970s is not going to see Meredith d'Ambrosio perform around town. Back then, I was either at the Harvard "Coop" buying jazz LPs, at Paul's Mall and the Jazz Workshop at night during the week and at discos on the weekends. Soon after I started JazzWax in 2007, I made up for lost time, and Meredith and I have been pals ever since. Yesterday, I spent much of the afternoon with Meredith's Another Time. Recorded in 1981 at the Beacon Hi...

Perfect Album: Louisiana Slim

One of my favorite 1970s Hammond organists is Leon Spencer. Along with Melvin Sparks (g) Idris Muhammad (d) and Buddy Caldwell (cga), Spencer was a virtual house organist for Prestige during that decade. In addition to recording behind Sonny Stitt and Gene Ammons, Spencer was on several Blue Note albums by Lou Donaldson. In between, Spencer recorded a handful of leadership albums for Prestige. His finest, Louisiana Slim, is perfect on every score. Recorded in 1971 and produced by Bob Porter, t...

Playa Fly Crownin Me for Throwback Thursday

For this week’s Throwback Thursday, we’re going to head to Tennessee. Back in the 90s, Tennessee had some of the best underground music. Taylor Boyz, Lil Milt, Kingpin Skinny Pimp and a few others were my favorites. The artist I’m featuring today is none other than Playa Fly. Playa Fly burst on the scene as part of the Three 6 Mafia. Not too long after that, Playa Fly split from the group. Playa Fly and Three 6 Mafia beefing with each other. With the two sides beefing, great music from both ca...

Daddy’s Hangout 2019 NCAA Tournament Prediction

It’s that time of year again and that’s March Madness of course. Honestly, this is my favorite time of the year because anything can happen, and it usually does. Coming into the tournament, Duke is the overwhelming favorite and deservedly so. Zion Williamson is the phenom that everyone talked about and then some. In the ACC tournament, he became the first freshman since Kevin Durant to average 30 points and 10 boards in a conference tournament. There are quite a few other teams that have a gre...
