How I Podcast: Articles of Interest’s Avery Trufelman

The beauty of podcasting is that anyone can do it. It’s a rare medium that’s nearly as easy to make as it is to consume. And as such, no two people do it exactly the same way. There are a wealth of hardware and software solutions open to potential podcasters, so setups run the gamut from NPR studios to USB Skype rigs (the latter of which has become a kind of default during the current pandemic). We’ve asked some of our favorite podcast hosts and producers to highlight their workflows — the equip...

Want podcasts to remain independent? Support independent podcasts

Full disclosure one: I’ve hosted a lot of independent podcasts, with varying degrees of success. Full disclosure two: This story is being hosted on a site owned by a corporate media giant. There’s even some chance that, by the time it’s published, the decision will be made to host it behind a paywall. The fact is, I’ve worked for a lot of big media companies throughout my professional career. It’s honestly the one way I’ve been able to make a consistent living as a professional writer living...

My favorite end-of-year tradition: the Bullseye podcast standup comedy special

As is the case every year Maximum Fun's Jesse Thorn has posted a special episode (MP3) of the Bullseye podcast, anthologizing excerpts from the best comedy albums of the year. Here's this year's contributors (Here's 2017 and here's 2016): Gina Yashere - Ticking Boxes Laura House - Mouth Punch Adam Cayton-Holland - Adam Cayton-Holland Performs His Signature Bits Sara Hennessey - They Know Too Much Louie Anderson - Big Underwear Kimberly Clark - Live at Max Fun Con 2018 Emily Heller...

My recent media diet for January 2018

Quick reviews of some things I’ve read, seen, heard, and experienced in the past month or so. I worked so much in January, mostly on getting the Noticing newsletter launched, that by the time the evening rolled around, all I wanted to do was collapse and watch a little TV or maybe go to a movie (I’ve seen all the Oscar Best Picture nominees this year). But I still managed to read a couple books and am currently working my way through two more: Emily Wilson’s translation of The Odyssey and Charle...

Close out a thoroughly unfunny 2017 with a hilarious compendium of the year's best standup on Bullseye

Every year, Jesse Thorn dedicates the final episode of his Bullseye podcast to a compendium of the year's best standup comedy albums (here's last year's); this year's installment is just out (MP3), and it's a must-listen tonic for difficult times. (more…)

90 minutes of the year's best standup comedy albums

The end-of-year episode of Jesse Thorn's Bullseye podcast (MP3) highlights the funniest bits from 2016's best standup comedy albums, an hour and a half of seriously funny stuff that I've enjoyed more than any other podcast I've listened to this week. It's been a bleak 2016, and this is a tonic.
