Comment on cranberry-orange breakfast buns by Jessica

Forecast called for 4-7 inches today, so I started these last night to celebrate our first real snow day. I had no trouble with the dough despite the fact that I don’t have a stand mixer, and they were really good — I’m excited to try the different flavors. Only thing I might do differently is decrease the sugar in the filling or nix the icing entirely. I used about 1.5 cups cranberries and kept the sugar level the same, and with the icing they were still right on the edge of too much sugar for...

Wild Women, Forty Pricks, and Western Noir

None Film critic Manny Farber, in typical inimitable style, summarized much of Samuel Fuller's film oeuvre through simultaneous praise and critique in the following observation: "What's good about his films is lovable; the daring, uninhibited use of semidocumentary techniques that save the movie from Fuller's mind, an unthinking morass at best" (Negative Space: Manny Farber on the Movies (New York: De Capo Press, 1998, 132). Put slightly more generously, Fuller's film style often trumps the plo...

Comment on melting potatoes by Jessica

I made these again on Christmas at 425F because I was roasting a chicken at the same time, and they turned out great AND they didn’t set off the smoke alarm this time! They were even more delicious (even though we accidentally melted the frozen broth in the same bowl as the butter. It was late at night!!). So it seems like a whole range of temperatures work!

The ‘Roger Rabbit’ Sequel Script is ‘Wonderful’, Says Robert Zemeckis, But Disney Isn’t Making It

It’s been 30 years since the ground-breaking Who Framed Roger Rabbit hit theaters, and it might be 30 more before we ever see a sequel. The blend of live-action and animation was a smash-hit at the box office, but despite several attempts, a follow-up never got off the ground. According to Robert Zemeckis, the latest Roger Rabbit sequel script is done, and pretty darn good. But Disney doesn’t seem interested. A potential Roger Rabbit sequel has been rumored ever since the original opened in ...

Comment on bakery-style butter cookies + the new book is here! by Jessica

I made these today. They are delicious butter cookies that definitely taste like they came from a bakery. I used Plugra butter and added 1/4 teaspoon of almond extract which really gave such a nice flavor to the cookie. I got about 24 sandwiches out of the recipe. I did not have any trouble piping the dough like other people did. I’m wondering if maybe others used too much flour. I used a food scale and measured the flour to exactly 260 grams. The dough piped out very easily. I live in a warm cl...

Comment on pull-apart rugelach by Jessica

Hi Deb! I see ‘Divide dough into quarters and roll first quarter out’…and use 1/4 of each of all the filling ingredients and do this 4 times? So, for the classic log, you’ll have 4 rolls? Do you think this would work with your parchment roll-out method i.e. skipping the first chilling of the dough, rolling out immediately, then chilling as a sheet (or 4 sheets)?
