In review: 2019 Kia Forte

The Forte is made over for 2019, and it's a decent car at a respectable price point. And what I really like is that it's simple to operate and easy to drive -- what most commuters want from their automobiles. Find out more in my review at the National Post (Driving.ca). [Author: Jil McIntosh]

Do you understand right-of-way?

Here's an interesting tidbit: the law doesn't give you the right of way; instead, it dictates when you have to yield it. Do you know what to do at a four-way stop, in a roundabout, or if there aren't any traffic signals? Find out in my "How It Works" column at the National Post (Driving.ca). [Author: Jil McIntosh]

Today's rant: When you're turning right, LOOK to the right!

If your head turns to the right, you should be turning it that way, every time you make a right-hand turn. And far too many drivers don't, and so far too many pedestrians and cyclists get hurt. See what I'm talking about in my rant over at AutoTrader. [Author: Jil McIntosh]

In review: 2019 GMC Terrain

Once among the homeliest of GMC's offerings, the Terrain has morphed into a good-looking vehicle, and with a smooth ride and decent overall performance. Still, at my tester's top-level Denali trim, it should be a little more luxo inside. Find out more in my review at AutoTrader. [Author: Jil McIntosh]

What's it like to run a gas station?

You don't set the price, you don't make much money on the fuel itself, and you can get a lot of grief when you have to ask customers for ID. Find out more in my story over at the National Post (Driving.ca). [Author: Jil McIntosh]

How Renault and Nissan first got together

The Renault-Nissan Alliance has been in the news for all the wrong reasons -- its chief Carlos Ghosn was arrested, accused of not reporting his full income -- but do you know how these two seemingly unrelated automakers got together in the first place? Find out more in my "Rearview Mirror" column at the National Post (Driving.ca). [Author: Jil McIntosh]

First Look: 2020 Ford Super Duty

It doesn't look much different, but Ford's Super Duty (F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550) gets two new engines, a new transmission, and a couple of cosmetic enhancements for 2020. No numbers on those engines yet, but Ford is promising some serious grunt. Find out more in my story over at the National Post (Driving.ca). [Author: Jil McIntosh]

In Review: 2019 Toyota C-HR

The looks are polarizing and the rear seat is tight -- plus you can't get all-wheel drive -- but the Toyota C-HR still has enough going for it that it should be on the test-drive list when you're shopping. Find out more in my review over at AutoTrader.ca. [Author: Jil McIntosh]

In Review: 2019 Ford Escape

Only the F-Series outsells the Escape in Ford's lineup, and there's a reason why: it's well-sized and it's a decent driver. I like it: find out more in my review over at the National Post (Driving.ca). [Author: Jil McIntosh]

In review: 2019 Chevrolet Equinox Diesel

Some automakers are moving away from diesel but others are sticking with it, and that includes Chevrolet, which offers an oil-burning version of its Equinox. It's a practical little machine, but don't expect earth-shakin' power: this diesel's all about efficiency, not muscle. Find out more in my review over at AutoTrader. [Author: Jil McIntosh]

Why does it take so long for technology to arrive in cars?

In review: 2019 Ram 1500

Ram says its truck is "all-new," but its engines carry over, and that's a good thing -- they've always been among the best and now they're wrapped in newness. Find out more in my review at the National Post. [Author: Jil McIntosh]

In review: 2019 Porsche Cayenne

It's a complete makeover for 2019, but the Cayenne still looks like a Cayenne: there's only so much you can change when you're dealing with such an iconic brand, of course. It's still a great driver, and while I had the entry-level model, buyers should check it out before they automatically head up the ladder to something more powerful -- this, to me, feels just right. How do adaptive and automatic headlights work?

Headlights used to be pretty plain things: you turned them on and off, and that was about it. Today they can see around corners or determine just how bright they're supposed to be. Find out more in my "How It Works" column at the National Post. [Author: Jil McIntosh]

In review: 2019 Toyota Highlander

A good vehicle, for most consumers, is one that gets them from A to B without any fuss, in comfort, and at a reasonable price. And that's where Toyota sets its Highlander, which is a serious contender in the commuter sport-ute category. Find out more in my review over at AutoTrader. [Author: Jil McIntosh]

2019: New vehicles under $30,000

Although many of us dream of zipping along in ultra-expensive vehicles, it's the "bread-and-butter" cars that make up most of the market. Have a look at what's coming for 2019 under $30,000 in my story at the National Post. [Author: Jil McIntosh]

Bricklin: The Canadian car that Canadians couldn't buy

In the 1970s, New Brunswick famously made the sporty-looking, plastic-bodied Bricklin, the brainchild of the man who introduced Subaru to America (and would later bring over the Yugo as well). But things didn't go well, and the province eventually lost $23 million on the deal. Find out more in my "Rearview Mirror" column at the National Post. [Author: Jil McIntosh]

Why are auto insurance premiums so high?

In Canada, premiums differ considerably from province to province: in 2018, Quebec had the lowest premiums, while British Columbia and Ontario topped the list. Find out why -- and how you can help to reduce your premiums -- in my story at the National Post. [Author: Jil McIntosh]

What's that on the side of the highway?

Ever drive along the highway and see what look like sheds with no sides, or spinning cups, or dirt piled against a fence, and wonder what it's all about? Alongside many highways, there are structures for animals, for determining the weather, and for helping to keep you safe. Find out more in my "How It Works" column at the National Post. What's involved in developing a vehicle?

There are lots of raw materials that go into a vehicle -- steel, rubber, plastic -- but what really costs the cash is what it takes to develop and engineer it in the first place. Find out what's involved in my "How It Works" column at the National Post. [Author: Jil McIntosh]

General Motors of Canada: A century old in 2018

Of course the big news in Oshawa, Ontario is GM's decision to close its assembly plant there, but the city is also home to the headquarters of General Motors of Canada. It grew out of a horse-drawn carriage company and carried its founder's name, McLaughlin, up until the Second World War. Find out more in my "Rearview Mirror" column at the National Post. First Drive: Mercedes-Benz G 550 and AMG G 63

Vehicle makeovers are usually progressive, and so when I get in an "all-new" model, I generally find whatever's been done to make it a bit better. But with Mercedes-Benz's G-Class, that went out the window. I admit -- I hated the old one. It was cramped, noisy, and was all over the road. So I went into the all-new one not sure of what I'd find. And you know what? There are so many positive changes, the damn thing's won me over. Find out more in my review at AutoTrader.     [Author: Jil McIntosh]
