IDC: Flat Smartphone Growth Projected for 2016

That’s the projection shared Friday by the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. Although growth remains positive, it is down significantly from the 10.4% growth in 2015, the report explains. WatchOS 3 Offers New Hope for Smartwatch Category

Apple finally responded to concerns that were threatening to scuttle its once-promising wearables category. Its introduction of watchOS 3 at this week's WWDC has drawn high praise. The Apple Watch represented the company's attempt to marry the ultimate Dick Tracy smart gadget with the genius of the iPhone, but it fell short. Instead of a convenience, it was far too slow and complicated for many consumers to navigate. WatchOS 3 is a "significant and welcome upgrade," said Jitesh Ubrani, senio...

This is the biggest issue with the Apple Watch's new 911 feature (AAPL)

A big flaw with the Apple Watch's new 911 feature highlights why people aren't too keen about smartwatches in the first place. When Apple rolls out its Watch OS 3 update in the fall, users will be able to reach emergency services — 911 in the US, or any emergency services in any country — simply by pressing the side button for three seconds. After a 10-second countdown concludes to ensure you didn't dial accidentally, the Watch will call 911 and send your location. Once the call concludes, the W...

This chart shows very clearly why people are disappointed by Apple Watch sales (AAPL)

Apple sold 4.1 million Apple Watches in the fourth quarter of 2015, according to IDC estimates. That makes it the second-best selling wearable device in the quarter, trailing only Fitbit. But most people were disappointed by Apple Watch's sales figures. Why? Because Apple Watch failed to bring a significant holiday jump in its sales during the quarter, typically the best-selling period of the year. This chart by Statista, based on data from IDC, shows Apple Watch's holiday sales only saw a sligh...

It looks like the Apple Watch had a horrible holiday season (aapl)

Apple shipped 4.1 million Apple Watches in the fourth quarter of 2015, according to an estimate from International Data Corporation.  That's way lower than most people were guessing.  Because Apple doesn't release sales numbers for the Apple Watch, IDC estimates are the best look at how the smartwatch is doing in the market. (Even Apple executives use IDC statistics.) Since the Apple Watch came out in April, here's how many Apple has shipped, according to IDC: Q2, 2015: 3.6M Q3, 2015: 3.9M Q4...
