Outfit Formula: Juicy Orange

Studies have shown that orange is the least liked colour in the world, (blue is the most liked). So I might be one of the few who bat for Team Orange as a colour. I also love it as a fruit, flavour, and scent. My favourite shade of red has a lot of orange in it, and as a Dutch citizen, orange is my national colour. I wear orange year round with white, cream, burgundy, shocking pink, bright red, yellow, mustard, navy, turquoise and denim blue. Yorkies Sam and Jo have bright orange collars, and hu...

Fangs – review

Director: James Ian Mair Release date: 2021 Contains spoilers This was a low budget vampire flick that I found free to view on YouTube. There was an aspect that reminded me of the film the Return of Dracula - although the device used worked in the 1958 film and became a plot hole in this. It is also a monster mash with a Mummy (Benjamin Mair) involved. It starts with a voice-over telling us about vampires and how really real they are. It also suggests that the most powerful vampires can daywalk...

Cooking up a new approach to Mennonite food

When Googler Jo Snyder was 20 years old, she left her family crop farm outside of Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, with a backpack, a guitar and a bike. She got on a train, traveled 30 hours to Winnipeg, Manitoba, enrolled in university and later started a punk rock band. She was the first one in her “pretty big, close and liberal Mennonite family” to move away (and is certainly the first punk rocker among them), but the values of her upbringing stayed with her. She still values community, kindness,...

They now live together in Wiltshire with their puppy, HansWhen Joe was at university in 2010, his housemate went through a phase of logging into his Facebook page to play practical jokes. “He used to add random people as friends on my account. Joakim Noah loses his starting job; is his relevance on the Bulls next?

NBA When Steve Kerr took over the Warriors last season, he played a delicate game: minor tweaks to the defense, slow redirections with the offense, gentle shifts in minutes. He was replacing a coach, Mark Jackson, who was popular within the locker room and had found a winning for mula. His job, then, was to turn a playoff team into a champion. Kerr’s biggest early-season move? He sent his most experienced starter, an ace defender with an inconsi...

Where Did You Grow Up?

My friend Joanna Goddard runs a website called Cup of Jo. She started it as a personal blog and has turned it into a site for women with a diverse and interesting group of contributors. However, the truly marvelous thing about Cup of Jo is the comments. That’s right, the comments. They are always good, often great, and occasionally sublime. Years and even decades after most websites have removed their comment sections for being toxic and unwieldy, Cup of Jo readers are in there delivering on the...

The Forgiven Review: A Boozy, Biting Saga Of The Haves And The Have Nots [TIFF 2021]

"The Forgiven" has the feeling of a strong literary novel; the type you pore over after pouring yourself a glass of scotch rather than the type of mindless potboiler you read on the beach. And indeed, this multi-narrative, multi-character saga is based on a novel by Lawrence Osborne. I haven't read the book, so I can't comment on how faithful this adaptation is. But I was impressed with the overall literary feel of "The Forgiven;" a vibe that could easily translate to the printed page. That's no...

DIY faux fireplace made from an upcycled hutch

When I spotted a free hutch on the side of the road earlier this summer, I snagged it in a heartbeat. Sure, it was dated and needed a little love, but it had such good bones that I couldn't pass it up. I actually turned the bottom of a hutch into a console table right away, but the top half sat in my garage a few weeks until I found inspiration. How could I transform the top of the hutch into something new as well, to get the most possible out of this upcycled piece of furniture? Jo and I f...

Beat the summer doldrums with comforting eats in the San Fernando Valley

“Doldrums” — it’s a wonderful word, born as the sailor’s jargon for what’s technically known as the Intertropical Convergence Zone. That’s the zone near the Equator, where the northeast and southeast trade winds converge, canceling each other out — leaving a region with no wind, where sailing ships would become trapped in what’s also known as “the calms.” They were caught, unable to move, with their water running short, and their food running low. It often was a death sentence for the sailors of...

Opinion: EVs Should Not Get More Government Incentives

The current $7,500 Federal electric vehicle tax incentive could get a boost to $12,500 if the “Clean Energy for America” bill ever makes its way to reality – but it’s absolutely the wrong way to go, in my opinion.
