Angels’ Jo Adell motivated after dismal rookie season

TEMPE, Ariz. — When Jo Adell looks back on his rookie season, he doesn’t see a .161 batting average, far too many strikeouts or a ball hitting his glove and popping over the fence. All of that, in Adell’s eyes, was just the opportunity to improve. “Having immediate success right off the bat would be great, absolutely,” Adell said. “But this was the best thing for me, to be able to have that type of struggle, to be able to take a step back and go, ‘Hey, you know what, Jo, you got some stuff you g...

The best crispy, chewy chocolate chip cookie recipe

Chocolate chip cookies are one of my favorite sweets to bake and eat, and over the years I have developed a recipe that really hits all the elements that I love most — chewy, crispy, a little bit salty, and loaded with chocolate. Jo previously shared her ultimate chocolate chip cookie recipe with you, and today I'd like to share mine. Like any good cookie, my recipe starts with good ingredients. I use real butter (not margarine) and a high-quality pure vanilla extract, like Watkins (don't use ...

The Latest: Minnesota officials urge proper mask wearing

By The Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota health officials urged this week that people wear masks — and wear them properly — as the state reported an additional 964 new infections on Saturday. More than 6,300 people have died in Minnesota and more than 470,000 people have had confirmed coronavirus cases since the start of the pandemic. State figures show more than 209,010 people have received the full two-dose series of the vaccine. However, health officials point out people need to wear m...

The Latest: Mardi Gras muted in New Orleans by coronavirus

By The Associated Press NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans’ annual pre-Lenten Mardi Gras celebration is muted this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Mayor LaToya Cantrell has ordered bars closed during the Mardi Gras weekend that started Friday and runs through Tuesday. The lavish parades are canceled and there are limits on gatherings. Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, is the annual pre-Lenten bash celebrated along much of the Gulf Coast — with the biggest celebration in heavily Catholic New Orleans. ...

"I'll be desperately good for the rest of my life": notes on Greta Gerwig's Little Women

I have mixed feelings about the movie, especially given my admiration for Greta Gerwig’s work otherwise. Her earlier movie Frances Ha (2012), cowritten with Noah Baumbach, is one of my all-time favorites, a superbly edited black and white film made with a nothing budget. With Little Women, there’s just something about the sentimental milieu of the 1860s style of Alcott’s writing, the ready emotion of the characters, the “classic” status of this much beloved novel, Margie’s saintlike self-sacrif...

A Dozen Books; Or What I Read in Late January

Happy February! As I mentioned on Saturday, I know I've been little seen on social media as of late, but that suits my current needs. Still, I wanted to share what I've read and listened to since my last summary. If you follow me on Goodreads, then you've already seen my thoughts on these books. Thanks to the publishers, audiobook publishers, and/or Libro.fm for the review copies. Marion Lane and the Midnight Murder by T. A. Ich ekle mich plötzlich vor meinem Partner – was kann ich tun?

Marc Bergevin Expects “Big Things” From Jonathan Drouin

from Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette, Bergevin also admitted the time has come in Jonathan Drouin‘s career for him to take the next step. The hope obviously is Drouin will become more of an offensive force while proving to be committed and engaged. Drouin was performing admirably last season until being sidelined with a wrist injury that required surgery. He returned and produced a goal and six assists in 10 playoff games. “The bar’s high,” Bergevin said. “Our expectations ...

Dennis McCarthy: When it comes to Tommy Lasorda, what I remember most is the laughs

What do I think about Tommy Lasorda’s passing? I’ll tell you what I think about Tommy Lasorda’s passing. It’s a crying shame, but the guy couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat. Oh, the laughs that man gave us for over 50 years with his X-rated rants on bums hitting .200 who got lucky and beat the Dodgers. Side-splitting laughs, tears rolling down your face laughs. I’d give you a couple, but I’d get fired. There’s plenty of PG-rated stories, though. Lasorda driving in the rain alone, late f...

Alexander: Tommy Lasorda was a baseball original

All those years ago when Tommy Lasorda was managing Dodgers minor leaguers, it was probably evident though unnoticed at the time: He would ultimately be a major league manager unlike any the game has ever known, before or since. Lasorda was a rookie league manager in Pocatello (1965) and Ogden (1966-68), and then a Triple-A manager at Spokane (1969-71) and Albuquerque (’72). Among the young players the organization would send to him at Ogden were future big leaguers Charlie Hough, Bill Russell, ...

Dodgers Hall of Fame manager Tommy Lasorda dies at 93

As a teenager growing up near Philadelphia in the 1940s, Tommy Lasorda said he went to a Phillies game once and asked an obscure outfielder with the visiting team, the New York Giants’ Buster Maynard, to sign his scorecard. Maynard snubbed the young Lasorda, pushing the scorecard away. Years later, Lasorda hadn’t forgotten. Then a 21-year-old left-hander in the Brooklyn Dodgers’ farm system, Lasorda found himself in a Sally League game facing Maynard, hanging on after an intermittent big-league ...

20 Things in 2020 That Made it a Surprisingly Good Year

We all know that 2020 was an insanely awful year – a year we want to put behind us even if it’s one we’ll talk about for the rest of our lives. While I was certainly affected, I was also spared the worst of 2020. No one I was close to caught the virus (though my mother was in a long term care home that saw a major outbreak.) I always had food on my table, and my husband who is my best friend, was always there for me. I never had to live with my own company for months on end and I knew I could pa...

Comment on split pea soup by Jo

Just want to add my two cents about Pea Soup! Yes I am the child who requested it for her birthday supper much to the dismay of all siblings even though it meant ham dinner preceded my day. Now I make a vegetarian version and use smoked paprika to add a smoky flavor. I do like to add a sweet potato to the pot and some croutons are a plus. I once was told that the yellow version is how it is done in Canada. I couldn’t taste the difference. That for bringing glory to a great winter meal

How a tiny mutant worm is helping find a cure for a rare form of cancer

When the Williamson family from Dundee lost their mother Sue to a rare cancer named phaeochromocytoma in 2003, they didn’t realize that further devastation was to follow. Of her four children, twins Jennie and James discovered that they also have the faulty gene that cut short their mother’s life. Both twins are affected with inoperable tumors wrapped around vital blood vessels and nerves in their necks. Father Jo decided to appear in a Cancer Research pledge video (below) in memory of his wife ...
