That Goofy (Knowing) Grin

Skipper was adopted from Wisconsin Sheltie Rescue when he was 7 months old. A puppy mill rescue; he’s come a long way since then. He knows how good he’s got it.He has a bed in the kitchen, one in the dining room, 2 in the living room (one facing our way to watch us watch TV, and one facing the other way looking out the patio door.) And of course a special space in the bedroom. A rescue should be pampered! Happy Birthday to Jodi’s Mom! ;) Sheltie Nation - Largest Community of Sheltie Lov...

Irene Kral: Steveireneo!, 1959

Irene Kral recorded quite a few good albums but four great ones. My favorites by the singer and sister of Roy Kral (of Jackie and Roy fame) include her very first tracks on Maynard Ferguson's Boy With Lots of Brass (1957), on which she sang Imagination, The Song Is You, I Hadn't Anyone But You and Moonlight in Vermont. She would marry Ferguson trumpeter Joe Burnett a year later. I also love the two albums she recorded with extraordinary pianist Alan Broadbent—Where Is Love? (1974) and Gentle Ra...

UCLA ‘needs to inject some life’ into men’s basketball program with coaching search

The optics were just all off. UCLA in Pauley Pavilion, getting trampled by Liberty, the crowd showering the Bruins with boos. Don MacLean, UCLA’s all-time leading scorer who was on assignment calling the game for Pac-12 Networks, knew. Things couldn’t go on like this. “I think that was the final nail in the coffin,” MacLean said. About 30 hours after UCLA’s 15-point loss to Liberty, news broke of Steve Alford’s dismissal. UCLA announced the coaching change the following morning. The Bruins are j...

UCLA men’s basketball notebook: Murry Bartow makes lineup change in interim debut

LOS ANGELES — UCLA floundered to a fourth consecutive loss last Saturday, falling to Liberty by 15 points and committing more turnovers than made field goals. Steve Alford said he would make a lineup change. What followed was a coaching change, as Alford was dismissed less than 48 hours after the loss, but his replacement, Murry Bartow, still fulfilled his predecessor’s promise. In Bartow’s first game as the head coach at UCLA, he inserted guard Chris Smith into the starting lineup against Stanf...

The Ultimate 2018 Holiday Gift Guide for Travelers

Posted: 12/3/18 | December 3rd, 2018 Travelers can be a fickle group of people to buy gifts for as we’re constantly coming and going. We usually don’t carry a lot of stuff with us, and no two travelers are alike so finding the perfect gift for the traveler in your life can be tricky. While a plane ticket is never a bad idea (I’m a window seat in case anyone is thinking of getting me one), I’ve put together this ultimate (and our first ever) holiday gift guide for travelers as there’s a lot of g...

Inside a Netflix Star’s LA Bungalow, Budget Rental Secrets Included

For renters, it can be hard to make someone else’s house feel like your own, but for actress Jodi Balfour (you might recognize her as Jackie Kennedy from Netflix’s The Crown) and her partner Alex Ashbaugh, the challenge was a rewarding design exercise. After an abrupt move from a spacious apartment in Santa Monica, the couple now rents from a friend a 500-square-foot 1914 bungalow in Silverlake while they build a new house of their own in Highland Park. Though they’ve been in this transitional h...

Why Ari is My Favourite Bangkok Neighbourhood

Most visitors to Bangkok choose to stay in one of three neighbourhoods. There’s the area Banglamphu around Khao San Road for the backpackers, Sukhumvit for the upmarket clubs and bars, and Silom for the business travellers. One place that’s not found on the typical traveller’s itinerary is the neighbourhood of Ari. Located in north-central Bangkok, it’s away from the major tourist attractions and therefore the tourists. It’s a neighbourhood that’s popular with middle-class Thais and expats, and ...

The Best Gifts for Travelers: 2018 Edition

The holidays are upon us and you know what that means — it’s time for our 2018 gift guide! Even though I’ve been blogging since 2002, last year was the first time I ever published a gift guide. So this year I am publishing a new version, keeping lots of the classics but adding in some new items in several categories. Why? Because most bloggers’ gift guides are unrealistic, featuring items they don’t actually use, filled with high-ticket items that most people can’t afford. Sad but true. I love ...

San Francisco Itinerary: What to Do in 3 (or More) Days

Updated: 10/25/2018 | October 25th, 2018 San Francisco is one of the most eclectic cities in the United States. It’s home to liberals, hippies, hipsters, techies, immigrants, yuppies, one of the oldest gay scenes in the States, that big red bridge, Alcatraz, delicious Chinese food, seafood, well, food in general (this is a great city to be hungry in), and so much more. It’s a magical place and one of my favorite places to visit since there is so much to see and do. While it lacks that certain j...

Comment on dijon-braised brussels sprouts by Jodi

I have made these several times and my family loves them. I made them again tonight and when my 18 yo son walked into the kitchen and notice them, he said, “Oh you made the good brussel sprouts!” The first time I made them, he was late for dinner and my husband and I had already finished eating. I told him that he needed to try the brussel sprouts because they are really good. He said that they are the only brussel sprouts that he wishes he had seconds of. I think that is a great testimony ...

The Stars Of The Future Start Somewhere

While I was photographing Jon and Jodi’s family session, they were telling me about their son Cooper’s desire to be an actor. They asked if there was any way for me to make some headshots for him during the family session. As a professional photographer , we sometimes have to think outside the box to make magic. On this day, I had to think quick and on my toes. I was not prepared for headshots in so many ways. What I wound up doing was improvising a clear white background by using the cle...

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: I Am One of the Millions Missing

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: I Am One of the Millions Missing Hi friends. I haven’t written much about my trials and tribulations with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), which most of you know as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. This is mainly because the two diseases that are most active in my life are Ankylosing Spondylitis and Fibromyalgia. Both of these chronic illnesses have no cure. Just because I haven’t written about ME doesn’t mean I don’t suffer badly from it, though. Quite a few people doubt t...

Serious Question: Is Personal Style Dead?

Lately I've found myself wondering: Is personal style dead? I mean, what does "personal style" even mean anymore? What if I love trends too much? What if I find the concept of having a uniform, well, boring? What if I feel like wearing jeans for a month straight and skirts the next? Would I be violating every rule of the journey to finding my personal style? (I clearly have SO many questions.)As I was searching for an answer, I remembered: I should Insta-stalk Courtney Trop of Always Judging for...
