New ‘Soul’ Teaser Shows Off Stunning Animation and a Wonderful Soundtrack

Pixar Animation’s new film Soul was intended to be released earlier this month, but the coronavirus put a stop to that. But now the movie is slated to arrive in November, and even though that’s a long way off, Pixar wanted to show off a little more of the movie while we wait. A new Soul teaser was revealed during a virtual panel at the Essence Festival of Culture, and not only does it have plenty of new footage from the movie with some truly stunning animation, but it also features the original...

Watch the lovely trailer for Soul, the new film from Pixar

My only complaint about Pixar's new film Soul is that is doesn't come out until June 19. Here's the description: Joe Gardner is a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before – a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth. Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious s...

Check it out below. Soul Trailer 25 years after Toy Story and 23 movies into their filmography, Pixar has finally made a f...

Chris, Milan and Frank

In The Wall Street Journal this week, I interviewed Blondie's Chris Stein for my "House Call" column in the Mansion section (go here). We talked about growing up an only child in Brooklyn, his tough time in school and how he became interested in photography. Chris is a fantastic photographer who documented the 1970s and '80s in New York in all of its dangerous, broken-down and freakish glory. The guitarist's latest book of photographs from the period, Point of View: Me, New York City, and th...

Charles Mingus in Detroit, 1973

The first half of 1973 in the Charles Mingus discography has been a dead zone. Mingus had just returned from a European tour in late November 1972 before heading out on a U.S. swing with new band members, including saxophonist John Stubblefield and pianist Don Pullen. In January '73, the Charles Mingus Quintet played Carnegie Hall with Dizzy Gillespie. Sadly, there is no recording of the concert. The quintet also played in Boston that month at the Jazz Workshop. There's a Japanese bootleg of th...

How To Create a Meaningful Photography Essay In 5 Steps

The storytelling nature of photography no secret. It has been used for a century to narrate stories in a very peculiar and effective way. Narrative photographic projects have great power, and regardless of the level of experience and maturity of the photographer, they are very appealing. Photographic essays invite us to research a topic or a theme in depth. Documentary photography is perhaps one of the closest things to “narrative” as we traditionally know it. Even though times have changed, and...
