Vacation In the Luberon Region of Provence

As I mentioned in last week’s blog posts, I was on vacation. Vincent and I were invited by a couple that we know from Paris, he’s American, she’s French, to their house in the Luberon region of Provence.   We took the TGV from Gare de Lyon to Aix Provence, a three-hour train ride, and traveled with another couple who are mutual friends with the couple in the Luberon. I have only been to Provence once before about ten years ago to Egalieres, near Saint Remy, so this was a new part of Prove...

Otter hauls self onto boat to escape hungry orca

Enjoy watching this dramatic encounter in Halibut Cove, Alaska, where an otter frantically heads for a boat in hopes of escaping a pursuing orca. Eventually, the otter jumps up onto the transom of John’s vessel moments before the whale arrives at the surface just feet away. John, 37, revealed a game of cat-and-mouse followed, with the otter hopping back into the water in an attempt to get away, only for the orca to chase it back up again three or four times. His fellow captain, Chantrelle Ma...

You Ask, I Answer: Why Map Customer Journeys?

John asks, “If the customer journey is different for every person, why bother trying to map it?” The presumption is that the customer journey is a wide open field of possibilities, when it’s more like a densely wooded forest. There are a limited number of rational pathways to conversion, and mapping both the probability and […] The post You Ask, I Answer: Why Map Customer Journeys? appeared first on Christopher S. Wordplay and Defenestration

Along with make-believe and play dough and reading books and Highlights magazines, Josie and I do some learning games.  We've been doing a lot of 'What letter does ___ begin with" so I shouldn't have been surprised when she breezed through this workbook I bought some time ago and forgot about till now. She did about 3/4 of it before getting bored. No challenge.  The Word Book is an ongoing project--something to be done while we're doing something else. Whether it's practicing gymnast...

Home office tax deduction still available, just not for COVID-displaced employees working from home

My desk in my home office which I deduct when I file my taxes. Not that I'm paranoid, but sometimes it seems like unseen others somehow know what's going on in my life. The latest example is tax related. Earlier this week, a #TaxTwitter pal asked that social media group about home office tax deductions. Granted, this is not an unusual question since the coronavirus pandemic has meant many of us have been working from home, a lot of us for the very first time. Today, the Internal Revenue S...

"He took objection to the word 'Styrofoam.' He said, 'This is so uncharacteristic of your work, to put something as time-dated as the word "Styrofoam" into it.'"

So said Robert Hunter, talking about Jerry Garcia's only problem with "Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo," quoted in "Jerry Garcia’s 50 Greatest Songs" (Rolling Stone)."Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo" is one of those titles that calls to mind no actual song, but once I start playing it, I know what it is:#33 by the way. My favorite Jerry Garcia song is ranked at #46, so I'm not really into the numbers. For the record "Uncle John's Band" is #1. The other "uncle" song — "Me and My Uncle...

Inside the rise of Netflix's new 'badass' CMO, who rubs elbows with Anna Wintour and the Obamas and handled crises at Uber and Papa John's

Bozoma Saint John, Netflix's newly named chief marketing officer, has climbed the corporate-marketing ranks over 20 years using her celebrity connections and ability to tie brands like Pepsi and Apple to cultural trends. She's also known as unapologetically outspoken and a role model for women of color — who are notoriously underrepresented in the C-suites of corporations.  Netflix has long been synonymous with streaming video, but it needs to convince people to keep subscribing as new options...
