Unlucky Ducks Must Improve Draft Position

Wednesday’s draft lottery did not go as the Anaheim Ducks and their fans wanted. It did go largely as expected, with the Ducks having the eighth-best odds to secure the No. 1 pick or at least a top-three pick. However, instead of obtaining the No. 8 pick, they fell one spot to No. 9. That’s not even the highest pick the Ducks have had in a decade. In 2012, they drafted Hampus Lindholm No. 6 overall in a season where they finished with the same amount of points that they did this season. Now ...

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Korbinian Holzer scored his first NHL goal in just over two years, Sam Steel added a short-handed goal and the Anaheim Ducks punctuated a miserable hockey season in Southern California with a 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Friday night. Daniel Sprong, Carter Rowney and Jakob Silfverberg also scored, and John Gibson made 44 saves as the Ducks earned their first victory in four games in this season’s Freeway Faceoff rivalry. Ducks, Ryan Kesler in the process of determining his future

ANAHEIM — Ryan Kesler’s season is over, but he and the Ducks would like to find out sooner rather than later whether his career can continue beyond 2018-19, so they’re in the process of determining what the next course of action is for him and his wonky hip. The first step was to get him to halt the exhaustive process he underwent simply to play in 60 games this season. He’s continued to work out in the gym, but he’s been off the ice and hasn’t gone through the stretching and rehabilitation exer...

Ducks primed for Jets rematch after beatdown last month

ANAHEIM — The last time the Ducks faced the Winnipeg Jets, they were coming off a nine-day hiatus for the All-Star break and their bye week. The Ducks were a mess, plain and simple. They were no match for the faster, smarter and more creatives Jets, who thumped them 9-3. The Ducks gave up six goals in a period for the first time in their 25-year history. Somebody by the name of Jack Roslovic scored three times for the Jets, who clicked three times on the power play and fired six pucks past John ...

2011 NHL Entry Draft: Five Forgotten Picks

The 2011 NHL Entry Draft in St. Paul is notable for a number of reasons. First, it was the second of three straight drafts the Edmonton Oilers picked first overall, selecting Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Second, it’s notable for being where True North Sports & Entertainment, which bought the Atlanta Thrashers a month earlier, revealed they would call their team the Jets and made their first-ever pick, selecting — controversially at the time — Mark Scheifele over Sean Couturier. Third, it’s notable for t...

Ducks’ Top 5 Rookie Seasons

With the Anaheim Ducks beginning, at least, a partial rebuild, there’s an increased focus on their rookies. That scrutiny will continue as general manager Bob Murray approaches a crucial draft, possibly with a top-three pick. Anaheim has twice had the No. 2 pick: first in 1994 when they selected Oleg Tverdovsky, and again in 2005 when they picked Bobby Ryan. The Ducks have had players who had fantastic rookie seasons, and not all of them were picked early in the first round. With that in mind, l...

Lightning’s Kucherov Still Has More to Prove

Tampa Bay Lightning star Nikita Kucherov’s record-tying night, when he matched Vincent Lecavalier’s 108 points on the season, should still leave fans wanting. Namely more. Kucherov Does It All for Lightning Kucherov has accomplished a great deal in a relatively short amount of time. He really only jumped on the scene a season after the last lockout. Dismissing a 17-game stint in the American Hockey League in 2013-14 (during which he scored 24 points), he effectively made the jump directly from...

Ducks defensive change under Bob Murray has paid off

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Something had to change. The Ducks lost seven consecutive games and were outscored 37-8 before General Manager Bob Murray fired Randy Carlyle and assumed the coaching duties himself Feb. 10. Their defensive play had to improve, so Murray tweaked their game plan. In the simplest terms, the Ducks ceased playing man-to-man defense and switched to a zone coverage. The shift has reduced the scoring chances and the goals the Ducks have given up in 10 games since the coaching change. ...

Ducks’ Ryan Kesler about to hit a grand milestone by playing 1,000th game

ANAHEIM — Ryan Kesler didn’t record a goal, an assist or a shot on goal in the Ducks’ 2-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday afternoon at Honda Center. He was credited with 11 victories in 18 trips to the faceoff circle and three hits, neither of which led the Ducks. Game No. 999 in Kesler’s NHL career was just another one for him, a typical showing in a season in which he’s sought to regain the edginess to his game, the gritty play that led to his selection as a Selke Trophy finalist...
