‘The Call of the Wild’ Review: A Heartfelt Survival Story Buried in a Mush of Uncanny CGI

Most attempts to adapt the works of Jack London to the big screen have, more often than not, resulted in a neutered final product. Chris Sanders‘ live-action/computer-animated adaptation of The Call of the Wild falls firmly in this category. Gone is the savage romance of London’s short novel in all its untamed glory, instead, The Call of the Wild is a Disney-fied The Revenant — though it’s even less a survival film than it is a schmaltzy celebration of that bond between dog and human. At parts,...

Why Harrison Ford Wanted to Play John Thornton in ‘The Call of the Wild’

Joining legends like Charlton Heston and Clarke Gable, who have played the role of John Thornton in “The Call of the Wild,” Harrison Ford now stands next to a CGI-enhanced version of the dog named Buck in the latest adaptation of Jack London’s classic 1903 novel. “I thought the film has a lot to say […]

‘The Call of the Wild’ Clip: Harrison Ford Befriends a Cartoon Dog

The Call of the Wild looks like a perfectly nice movie. Harrison Ford grew a beard and signed up to make a family film, which is surprising, since he seems like he’d rather…not do that sort of thing. But here he is, starring in Call of the Wild as John Thornton, who sets off on an adventure with a big dog named Buck. Buck is the real star of this movie, and he’s also completely digitally animated, which is just a little weird. Watch a new Call of the Wild clip below, where Harrison Ford meets B...

How One Man’s Story Offers a New Way to Understand Slave Insurrection

Wager, also known by his African name, Apongo, was a leader of the largest slave rebellion in the 18th century British Empire. But long before taking his part in the great Jamaican insurrection of 1760– 1761, commonly called Tacky’s Revolt, he had been on a remarkable odyssey. Apongo had been a military leader in West Africa during a period of imperial expansion and intensive warfare there. During this time, he had even been a notable guest of John Cope, a chief agent of Cape Coast Castle, ...

The Latest Milestone Is Special For Joe Thornton

from Paul Gackle of the Mercury News, Whenever Joe Thornton is asked about the latest-hockey legend that he’s passed in the NHL record books, he blushes and expresses humility. It’s a scene that played out when he eclipsed Mario Lemieux in November, Gordie Howe in February and Stan Mikita in March. While every name on the ladder provides its own dose of modesty, Thornton couldn’t deny that moving into a tie with Steve Yzerman for eighth place on the NHL’s all-time assists list (1,063)...

Tanzania: A Win-Win Situation for Magufuli Acacia's Barrick?

[Citizen] I heard last week that discussions between JPM and Prof John Thornton, Barrick Gold Corporation Executive Chairman, was not only extensive, but very productive. I think it is true; spot-on because unlike the previous engagements in contracts between our fellow citizens and Barrick, this time the moral concept of win-win situation came out flamboyantly loud and flawlessly clear.

Astrobotic drops out of $20M Lunar XPrize competition

Pittsburgh-based Astrobotic has pulled out of the competition for Google’s $20 million Lunar XPrize for the first commercial operation to land on the moon, according to TribLive. CEO John Thornton said Astrobotic’s technology and customers wouldn’t be ready for a 2017 trip and meeting the deadlines would require the company to accelerate its program in a way that wouldn’t be responsible. Astrobotic is now aiming for a lunar landing in 2019.
