Blackhawks react to losing Robin Lehner and Erik Gustafsson at the NHL trade deadline

Jonathan Toews gave a long answer about what Lehner and Gustafsson meant to the team, both on and off the ice. "Losing Lenny, losing Gus, I think those two guys have meant a lot to this team in the short time they've been here," Toews said. "Lenny came in right away and sometimes you're not too sure how those strong personalities are going to fit into a locker room, especially right away.

Sabres’ Kahun Is a Solution for the Top-Six

Their needs were pretty apparent. Everyone knew going into Monday’s trade deadline that the Buffalo Sabres needed to address their need for a second-line centre and a second-line right-winger. While they were unable to solve their issues at centre, the addition of 24-year-old Dominik Kahun may have solved their problems on the wing. Related: Buffalo Sabres’ 50-Goal Scorers He may not be one of the big names that have been spoken about for months but Kahun looks to be a pleasant surpris...

Blackhawks’ Deadline Reactions & Game Updates

It’s officially official. The 2020 trade deadline has come and gone, and as expected the Chicago Blackhawks have parted ways with defenseman Erik Gustafsson. It wasn’t as expected, but they also said goodbye to goaltender Robin Lehner. Both players were very popular with their teammates and the fanbase. And it certainly doesn’t help that the return for them was rather underwhelming. Let’s dive into these two deadline moves, as well as touch on some highlights from the last three games. Good...

Blackhawks’ Line Shuffling: A Look at Patrick Kane’s Linemates

When analyzing the 2019-20 season for the Chicago Blackhawks, there is one word that sticks out more than others – that word is “inconsistent.” There are a lot of reasons why the Hawks have become very unpredictable and it starts with the lineup. On paper, they look like they have have the roster that could go far. Unfortunately, that has not translated to the on-ice product. That has been the name of the game in hockey, however, because nothing is guaranteed. One that has always remained co...

Blackhawks’ Road Trip Woes Crush Playoff Hopes

It’s safe to say this recent five-game road trip was pretty important for the Chicago Blackhawks. They were already on the outside looking in, but were still on the cusp of a wildcard spot if they went on a roll. Well, they didn’t. They only secured one win and earned a mere two out of a possible 10 points. The frustrating part is they played some solid hockey, but just couldn’t consistently put it all together.   What more can one do as a Blackhawks’ fan but shake your head and brace...

Redoing the 2005 NHL Draft

Originally written April 2015 It’s been almost 15 years since one of the most noteworthy drafts in recent NHL history took place in Ottawa, Ontario. The 2005 NHL Draft was the first one after the lockout that caused the cancellation 2004-05 season. Because of that, every team in the league was put into the lottery for a chance at a player that many believed to be the best rookie since Wayne Gretzky. The Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers and Columbus Blue Jackets all had...

Former Canuck Kesler Nervous About Return to Vancouver

The Vancouver Canucks will be retiring the Sedin twins’ jerseys on Wednesday night against the Chicago Blackhawks, and the special night will feature some familiar faces to Canucks fans. This includes Ryan Kesler, who, during his time with the Canucks, grew into a leadership role and became a Selke Trophy winner. He was the heart and soul of the team when they made a run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2011. Related: The Sedin Twins and the 1999 NHL Draft The relationship took a turn when Kes...

Blackhawks on the Road, Look to Get Back on Track

A week-long road trip north of the border will hopefully help the Chicago Blackhawks find that momentum they had going into the All-Star break. The Hawks need to refocus after a third-period collapse on Sunday night during the trip’s opener against the Winnipeg Jets, as their early lead became a 5-2 loss. The night was not without its highlights, with captain Jonathan Toews picking up his 800th career point with a secondary assist on Dominik Kubalik’s goal just 15 seconds into the game. The g...

Andrew Copp Scores Go-Ahead Goal, Jets Come Back to Beat Blackhawks

WINNIPEG — Andrew Copp scored the go-ahead goal as part of a four-goal third period, and the Winnipeg Jets came from behind to beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2 on Sunday. Copp gave Winnipeg a 3-2 lead when he beat Chicago netminder Corey Crawford up high from in close with 6:33 left in regulation after taking a perfect pass from forward Jack Roslovic. Kyle Connor had a pair of goals while Blake Wheeler and Patrick Laine also scored for the Jets (29-23-5), who trailed 2-0 after 20 minutes. ...

Lundqvist Should Leave Rangers for Cup Chase

Henrik Lundqvist, all-time New York Rangers great, knew how he wanted to spend the back end of his Hall of Fame career. Not only did the goaltender express his desire to team management to remain with the only team he’s ever known through a painful rebuild, but he also wanted to be the one to lead it back to playoff contention. The sentiment was a study in loyalty from a highly-paid professional athlete, the kind not often seen in major sports anymore. Yet Lundqvist’s vision, honorable that i...

Blackhawks in Playoff Push, but Face Challenges

The Chicago Blackhawks had our hopes soaring last Saturday night with a 3-2 shootout thriller after their bye week. It was just what we wanted to see. They started on time, they had energy throughout the entire game, and picked up where they left off (five wins in the last six games before the break) with a victory and two points in the standings. We can’t say as much for the following two tilts versus the Minnesota Wild and the Boston Bruins. Against both teams they started flat and had trou...

Coyotes Weekly: Garland Sustains Solid Sophomore Season

Outside of midseason acquisition Taylor Hall, very few Arizona Coyotes forwards have been consistent point producers in 2019-20. The Coyotes have struggled all season to score goals – they’re ranked at 22nd in the league with 2.73 goals per game entering play on Thursday – and the lack of consistent goal production has hurt the team greatly with Vezina Trophy contender Darcy Kuemper still on the shelf with a lower-body injury. Aside from Hall, there have been a handful of players that head co...

Mcavoy, Bruins Beat Blackhawks 2-1 for 5th Straight Victory

CHICAGO — Charlie McAvoy scored 1:19 into overtime, and the Boston Bruins beat the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 on Wednesday night for their fifth straight victory. McAvoy finished a pretty passing sequence for the defenceman’s first goal of the season. David Krejci threw the puck outside to a streaking Jake DeBrusk, who made a perfect pass to McAvoy for the tap-in on the right side of the net. The Blackhawks thought they had taken a 2-1 lead with 1:05 left in regulation when it looked as if Dra...

Best Blackhawks’ Draft Picks: 2000 Through 2009

The Chicago Blackhawks have seen their fair share of success in this past decade. But that didn’t come without some arduous previous legwork. It’s not easy to build a legacy, and it all has to start somewhere. In the first of a two-part series we look at the Blackhawks’ past draft successes that led to them eventually being named Best Team of the 2010-2020 Decade. Blackhawks’ 2002 Draft Pick: Duncan Keith (2nd Round, #54 Overall) It all started with Mike Smith, who was general manager o...

Best Blackhawks’ Draft Picks: 2010 to Present

This is the second piece in a two-part series looking back on the Chicago Blackhawks’ best draft picks in the last two decades. The first column highlighted 10 players that were drafted from 2002 to 2009, with three different general managers calling the shots. But Stan Bowman took over in July of 2009, right after that year’s draft. This seems a fitting starting place for the modern day draft era of the Blackhawks. Since no one of real consequence was drafted in 2010, we’ll begin with 2011 and ...

Dominik Kubalik: The Blackhawks’ Dark Horse

It’s safe to say that Dominik Kubalik is the dark horse of the Chicago Blackhawks. With 21 goals and 11 assists in 49 games, he’s a rising star in the Blackhawks locker room and is in the discussion for a possible nomination for the Calder Trophy for Rookie of the Year. Here is a quick look at the history of Kubalik’s professional career and impressive rookie season. NHL Notebook: Players, coaches on the merits of the league's bye week

Jason Spezza guesses he's probably in the minority. The veteran centre for the Toronto Maple Leafs has been a creature of habit throughout his career — one where he rarely goes a day or two without hitting the ice during the season. That's why Spezza isn't a fan of the NHL's move to include a bye week for rest and relaxation on either side of the all-star break."I don't love it," said the 36-year-old. "I'd prefer to sprinkle the (time) throughout the season and have s...

Quenneville Coaches Panthers to 4-3 Win Over Blackhawks

CHICAGO — The Florida Panthers got Joel Quenneville a win in his return to Chicago, using a hat trick by Frank Vatrano to beat the Blackhawks 4-3 on Tuesday night for their sixth consecutive victory. The 61-year-old Quenneville coached Chicago to three Stanley Cup championships and nine playoff appearances in 10-plus years before he was fired when the team got off to a lacklustre start last season. He was hired by Florida in April, and the former NHL defenceman was showered with love in his f...

It was a rough night on Saturday for the Toronto Maple Leafs and their faithful fanbase, as the team was handed yet another blowout loss at the hands of the Chicago Blackhawks. Blackhawks rookie Dominik Kubalik swats home absurd goal

In another life, Chicago Blackhawks forward Dominik Kubalik would be an excellent baseball player, even if he's got this hockey thing figured out quite well. Kubalik has been one of the most surprising developments of the NHL season, and the 24-year-old scored his rookie-leading 20th goal in style against the Toronto Maple Leafs. He wouldn't look out of place at Wrigley Field, batting a backhand saucer pass from Jonathan Toews out of the air for a sensational goal.
