NFL QBs are getting intercepted less than ever; Kirk Cousins leads the league with 10 in 6 games

Welcome to our morning-after Vikings blog, where we'll revisit every game by looking at two players who stood out, two concerns for the team, two trends to watch and one big question. Here we go: Following Mike Zimmer's subdued press conference at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday, quarterback Kirk Cousins met with reporters to talk about his three-interception game in the Vikings' 40-23 loss to the Falcons. On a day where his first pass went to Atlanta linebacker Deion Jones and three of his first 14...

Notable SCOTUS Fourth Amendment activity, but nothing for sentencing fans

I flagged in this post from June my sense that the Supreme Court has become particularly (and problematically) quiet on sentencing matters.  This feeling continues with this morning's new SCOTUS order list in which the Court granted cert on three new cases, but denied cert without comment in the Demma reasonableness review case flagged here.  I suppose the coming oral arguments in Borden v. US, No. 19-5410 (another ACCA application case), and especially Jones v. Mississippi, No. 18-1259 (applica...

The Unhinged Scene at Miami Strip Club Tootsie’s After Curfew

MIAMI—Shortly after midnight on Sunday, a line of at least 50 men and women snaked from the entrance of Tootsie’s Cabaret to the sidewalk lining the perimeter of the massive strip club in Miami Gardens, a small city in South Florida that has clocked nearly 5,000 coronavirus cases since the coronavirus pandemic began. Two Miami Gardens police cars directed traffic to a satellite parking lot because Tootsie’s main lot was completely full.Less than 24 hours earlier, Tootsie’s owners had won a court...

Jones: Tuberville charity filings raise questions

U.S. Sen. Doug Jones of Alabama on Wednesday criticized Republican challenger Tommy Tuberville’s financial record after reports emerged that the former college football coach's nonprofit only gave a fraction of its money to charity while it spent tens of thousands of dollars to stage annual golf tournaments. The Associated Press and The New York Times reported this week that the Tommy Tuberville Foundation, an organization he formed to support veterans, spent one-third or less of its money on c...

Clarence Thomas Doesn't Like Section 230, Adding To His Anti-Free Speech Legacy (techdirt)

I'm not quite sure what has gotten into Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas lately, but he's been on quite a roll in terms of deciding he wants to toss out all sorts of well-settled precedents (including, in at least one case, his very own precedent). What's alarming, though, is that he seems particularly focused on hacking away at free speech and the 1st Amendment. Back in 2016, when people were discussing whether or Donald Trump could "open up" libel laws, lawyer Ken White noted that there w...

Remembering When Captain America Fell on That Grenade – and Created the Soul of the Marvel Cinematic Universe

(Welcome to Great Moments in MCU History, where we fondly recall great little bits that made us fall in love with the MCU.) After all these years, it’s fun to look back at early Marvel Cinematic Universe efforts. They’re all so quaint in retrospect, so tiny. Thor loses his hammer and has to fight a big metal guy who breathes fire. (Yes, I know he’s called the Destroyer, but he destroys little more than a block of New Mexico’s smallest town). Tony Stark makes his suit, flies around a bit, and...

A new study found immigrants in the US create more jobs than they take. Here's a breakdown of why they're more entrepreneurial than US-born workers.

Information packs are distributed by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services following a citizenship ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston. Reuters Immigrants are creating more jobs than they take, says Benjamin Jones and his colleagues at the Kellogg School of Management.  Their study found immigrants created companies — both large and small — at a higher rate than US-born entrepreneurs. Immigrant founders drove up the demand for labor, increased wages, and ...

Criminal justice issues again on the SCOTUS oral argument docket today (though again attention is on confirmation hearings)

The criminal justice cases on the SCOTUS docket that are likely of the greatest interest to sentencing fans are scheduled for oral argument on Nov 3 (aka Election Day): Jones v. Mississippi,  No. 18-1259, will address the Eighth Amendment rules for imposing LWOP sentences on juvenile murders, and Borden v. US,  No. 19-5410, will explore another variation on the application of the severe mandatory minimum term in the Armed Career Criminal Act.  Based on what I am hearing about the pace and conte...

‘Sweet Dreams’ explores the New Romantic scene that launched Duran Duran, Culture Club and more

For Dylan Jones, the paradox of the New Romantic music scene is that this British blend of new sounds and styles became a worldwide phenomenon thanks in large part to American television. “The New Romantics were made by America because of MTV,” says Jones, author of the new oral history “Sweet Dreams: From Club Culture to Style Culture, the Story of the New Romantics.” For those too young to experience it, the scene was one that combined synthpop music with outrageous fashion and makeup. “Withou...

Learn the Stories Behind Iconic Songs: The Rolling Stones’ “Miss You,” REM’s “Losing My Religion,” Procol Harum’s “A Whiter Shade of Pale” & More

There was a time when pop lyrics did not exactly spark curiosity, doo-lang doo-lang doo-lang. They may have tapped into some universal teenage feelings, but rarely inspired further thought along the lines of “Hmm, I wonder what—or who—inspired that.” Dutch station NPO Radio 2’s interview series Top 2000 a gogo lifts the veil. Each entry reveals the origin story of a well known song. The late Bill Withers, above, intimated that every woman he’d even been involved with thought "Ain’t N...

And so, according to data from Comcast and online entertainment providers, people are now watching as much TV on the weekdays as they once only did on the weekends. Time spent on streaming se...

AP FACT CHECK: False claims fly in Alabama U.S. Senate ads

Misleading claims are flying in attack ads for the closely watched Alabama U.S. Senate race between Sen. Doug Jones, a Deep South Democrat, and his Republican opponent Tommy Tuberville, a former college football coach. Tuberville, a political newcomer, is challenging Jones, who pulled off a close win during a special election three years ago. Republicans hope to win back the once reliably red Senate seat.
