How one founder turned her extensive retail experience into an entirely new kind of shopping

The Yes is her first foray into entrepreneurship, however, and we got the chance to talk to Julie all about her experience as a founder. On this week’s episode of Found, our weekly interview podcast, we hear from Julie all about how she identified the...

Masters of the Universe: The Motion Picture Is Worth Revisiting

With the success of the toyline, a hit cartoon, and a slew of other merchandise, the franchise had no choice but to try and make more money off of a live-action film. This muscle-bound movie didn’t hit quite in the height of He-Mania, but a year after the action figure sales plummeted . It was a troubled production, not well-received at the time of its release in 1987, and barely given a chance to make an impression, but it’s another gem that was always destined to become a cult classic, ado...

Ever Changing Light

Five hours drive  through magnificent countryside to an area I had never seen Aix les Bain. We went for one night while there we walked by the lake Yann told me that during WWII a German plane crashed into it two people drown and the other two were rescued.  Germany in turn released four French prisoners. Random conversation. We came to attend Yann’s cousin’s funeral  who died of covid… healthy, no underline conditions, loved enormously, a generous figure in the community. Tragic. He had his fi...

My Cousin Julie

Ah, my cousin Christine, Julie’s sister sent me this photo today. When Yann and I were newlyweds living in Paris, Julie came to visit. She would come visit us many many times as the years came and went.   Julie and I were 30 years old.    In this trip visiting us we went through Paris’ famous underground illegally, climbing on telephone wires with rubber boats we bought in Bon Marche for 150 Francs. It was probably the most daring, outrageous, thrilling experience I had ever had. An eye open...

Another Language Challenge.

Norbert Wierzbicki has posted another Guess The Language Challenge video; this one is thirty minutes long and features Julie Maksimova, a Latvian language lover. She was very good (if perhaps excessively tentative) and got all the answers right, and this time he shows the texts in written form afterwards, which is great. I got all the answers right (large Cup of Satisfaction!); I got 1, 2, 3, and 6 easily, 4 with the help of the map Julie requested, and 5 only by the same kind of desperate gue...

So Long, I Am Jumping the Shark

Jeff Bezos blasts into space on own rocket: ‘Best day ever!’

By MARCIA DUNN VAN HORN, Texas (AP) — Jeff Bezos blasted into space Tuesday on his rocket company’s first flight with people on board, becoming the second billionaire in just over a week to ride his own spacecraft. The Amazon founder was accompanied by a hand-picked group: his brother, an 18-year-old from the Netherlands and an 82-year-old aviation pioneer from Texas — the youngest and oldest to ever fly in space. “Best day ever!” Bezos said when the capsule touched down on the desert floor in r...

Comment on coffee toffee by Julie

I’m so frustrated with this. It’s delicious, but the first time I made it, the texture turned out wrong (grainy), and I did some research and maybe I figured out why. Tried it again, and this time the butter separated right at the end. I stirred the flipping thing the whole time (between 200 degrees and 300 degrees) with the right kind of whisk. I followed the recipe to a T except that I kept my gas stove below medium head (still, it went FAST). I’m sure the recipe isn’t to blame, but I wanted t...

‘The Souvenir Part II’ Review: An Extremely Accomplished and Superior Sequel [Cannes]

In 2019 Johanna Hogg unfurled The Souvenir, a film that /Film’s chief film critic described as “stunning” while admitting that its languid pace and convoluted structure required him to “stick with it” and that many walked out during the screening. Stick with it I did, and still found this semi-autobiographical tale of a young film student who falls for a dashing Foreign Office employee, only to find that he hides dark secrets, completely indulgent and ridiculous. Honor Swinton Byrne seemed to w...

Here are the Movies That Inspired ‘Fear Street’ Director Leigh Janiak – And Where You Can Watch Them

Fear Street director Leigh Janiak clearly knows her horror movies. The co-writer and director of the Netflix horror flicks recently sat down for a chat with /Film about all things Fear Street, including the movies that directly influenced each chapter in the Netflix trilogy. While some of the picks seem obvious, like 1996’s Wes Craven classic, Scream, she also referenced auteur Terrence Malick and the 1980s kids classic, The Goonies. Here’s where you can stream or rent of the films that inspire...

Comment on zucchini butter spaghetti by Julie

Ok, this was amazing. I was a little skeptical that a pasta made from so much zucchini could be this good, but I’m so glad I tried it. Totally a recipe where the sum is greater than its parts.

Cannes 2021: Joachim Trier's Superb 'The Worst Person in the World'

One of the best films at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival is a Norwegian romantic drama about a young woman on the verge of turning 30. It's a refreshingly intellectual and mesmerizing look at romance and love in our modern world, and all the remarkably empowering and frustrating challenges that come with it. The film is titled (in English) The Worst Person in the World, and the original Norwegian title is Verdens Verste Menneske, though the French title is Julie (en 12 Chapitres) or simply Julie...

Comment on ultimate zucchini bread by Julie

This is glorious. I made it vegan by swapping the eggs for aquafaba, but otherwise stayed true to the recipe. It is easily the best (and easiest) zucchini bread I have ever had. It looks exactly like the photos, even with the swap, and the texture is moist, tender, and perfect. Thank you!

Comment on black pepper tofu and eggplant by Julie

One of my favorite recipes ever. All the same, I make it with minor charnges. I press the tofu for a while (~1 hour), which helps it get crisp in the oven. I toss it with cornstarch first, then oil, THEN I toss the eggplant with oil in the same bowl. That keeps the cornstarch from sticking to the oily bowl (because the bowl is not oily yet). I don’t preheat the pan with oil (that was just messy and annoying and not worth it to me); I just put the oiled tofu and eggplant onto the cold pan and it ...

Comment on lemon yogurt anything cake by Julie

This recipe does not disappoint! Very moist and dense and flavorful. I used Fage 5% fat yogurt and baked for 70 minutes (350 for 60 minutes plus 10 more minutes at 325) to get to the point where it was done in the middle. Nice lemony combination with the blueberries.

Postcards from Phoenix: When Family Ties are Tested

In an earlier postcard, we heard from a young man who felt his family loyalties were tested by his employment at The Trinity Church. He felt he had to choose between his parents and loyalty to the leadership of the church. He chose his parents. In this Postcard from Phoenix, Jolie Monea describes a similar situation. She feels estranged from her daughter (married to Zac Driscoll) because Jolie maintains relationships with people who have left The Trinity Church and have expressed their views pub...
