Comment on sour cream and chive fantails by Julie

Can you make ahead by having the dough rise overnight on the counter (i.e., not in the fridge)?

Comment on pecan pie by Julie

I made this for Thanksgiving 2020 and the filling was perfect. I followed the recipe in all respects. Nice to have a way to use up the can of Lyle’s Golden Syrup we had hanging around. I made it the day before, and kept it covered at room temperature. The crust was a little too robust for my taste, but this filling is perfection. Sweet but not sickly and the bourbon was a nice touch. Several people thought it had chocolate in it and I understand the comment, but it was perfect without it.

art in our new home

When we were in Salt Spring Island, we went to the Saturday Market, and I instantly fell in love with this man's work.  Salt Spring artist Lorne Tippett uses wine-barrel stays to create a hanging frame, and carves the designs from reclaimed wood. We splurged and bought one. It's not like we're spending money on anything else this year! It's now hanging on our covered deck. We hung it where you can also see it from inside the house. I love the shape of the wooden base; it echoes t...

Comment on pumpkin bread pudding by Julie

In reply to Anne. I’ll be curious to hear how brioche worked! We’ve made this more times than I can count, and have found that crusty breads work really well, but I do like to balance with a softer bread too. You get so much texture and moisture/custardy pieces that way, as they soak up the custard really differently. My favorite versions have used either a super crusty “cranberry bog bread” or apple pecan bread AND a few day or two biscuits or scones mixed in (done the first time cuz we had ...

Industrial Revival: Atlas Repurposes a 1920s Abandoned Factory into a Creative Hub

“Deciding to restore the original windows was more-or-less a decision to compromise on energy-efficiency,” says Joseph. “We offset that by buying into a solar CSA, and currently all of the energy consumed by the building is solar generated.”As more and more city mice head for the hills, a rustic Brooklyn has emerged in the scenic Hudson River towns north of NYC. But industrial Newburgh, across the Hudson from happening Beacon, has until recently never been part of that scene. A once-booming indu...

"What to Expect When You’re Expecting Robots"

As Covid-19 has made it necessary for people to keep their distance from each other, robots are stepping in to fill essential roles, such as sanitizing warehouses and hospitals, ferrying test samples to laboratories, and serving as telemedicine avatars. There are signs that people may be increasingly receptive to robotic help, preferring, at least hypothetically, to be picked up by a self-driving taxi or have their food delivered via robot, to reduce their risk of catching the virus. As more intel...

GOP lets doubts about Biden’s legitimacy flourish

By JULIE PACE and STEVEN SLOAN | Associated Press WASHINGTON — In backing President Donald Trump’s baseless claims of election fraud, Republicans risk leaving millions of Americans with the false impression that the results of the 2020 race are illegitimate. And that may be the point. None of Trump’s legal challenges and assertions of voting irregularities has revealed any substantive issues with the election that would overturn the results. And some GOP lawmakers and party officials privately a...

“Do The Thing!”

My eleven year old son asked me to watch The Last Airbender series with him. It was one of the most brilliant series and animations I’ve seen. Like a good Pixar movie, this was excellent for kids and adults… clever, complex, etc. In the next Avatar series, based around a different character (Korra), there is a brilliant-but-wacky entrepreneur, or business tycoon, named Varrick. His assistant’s name is Zhu Li (which sounded like Julie), and she was uber-competent and patient with Varrick. Probabl...

Siobhan & Julie’s Byron Bay Elopement

Julie & Siobhan This was a wedding week that was very much unexpected. “All of our family and friends cancelled the week of the wedding as the NSW government had announced that no one should travel unless it was for essential purposes. Our wedding reception venue had to close due to restaurant closures and the new restrictions for five people (including the couple) at the ceremony were introduced.” So if you have learnt anything this October, during The Elopement Issue, let it be that you can el...

I can’t believe October is almost over, but it is. Which means it’s almost November, which also means the year is almost over. Required Reading: Heading ‘Upstate’

We’ve been enamored of writer Lisa Przystup’s singular design sense ever since we first featured her sparsely rustic Catskills farmhouse way back in 2017—painted wood floors, a brass kitchen backsplash, and an airy attic guest room included. Ever since—and especially these days—I’ve followed via her Instagram feed, @brass_tacks, for glimpses of upstate life and little-by-little adjustments to her place. It was on Instagram that we first spotted Przystup’s new book—Upstate: Living Spaces with Spa...

My Excellent Provence Adventure Planned By Julie Mautner- Part 2

On Saturday morning at 10am, Julie arranged a food tour around Saint Remy on electric bicycles. Jeff, a charming Frenchman  was my guide. We met at the Sun-E-Bike shop a few minutes before 10am, so we could get our bicycles. Sun-E-Bike shop was generous in supplying my bicycle rental free of charge. The studious and helpful staff made sure I knew everything I needed to know about how the bicycle operates and they let me take it for a short test spin before the tour to make sure I had the righ...

When it comes to the evening tipple, no need for a crystal goblet (especially if the vintage on offer is a go-to everyday table wine). My Excellent Provence Adventure Planned By Julie Mautner- Part One

When I was in the Luberon in late July, I met Julie Mautner for a coffee in Saint Remy. Julie is a transplanted American who has been living in Saint Remy for over 20 years.
