Caleb Ferguson goes to Dodgers’ Injured List as Rich Hill returns

LOS ANGELES – With Rich Hill ready to come off the Injured List on Sunday, something had to give. It was Caleb Ferguson’s oblique. Ferguson was placed on the IL Sunday, clearing a roster spot, after apparently injuring an oblique muscle in his left side. Ferguson faced three batters in Saturday’s game, failing to retire any of them. He walked two and gave up a single to load the bases in the eighth inning. “He felt something in his left side. Oblique-ish,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said befor...

Dodgers in a dilemma as Joe Kelly continues to struggle

CHICAGO — The Dodgers broke from their established practice by signing a setup reliever to a big free-agent contract last offseason, expecting Joe Kelly to pitch in high-leverage situations for them. That hasn’t worked out well so far. Kelly has allowed runs in seven of his first 10 appearances with the Dodgers for an ERA of 9.82. Opposing batters are hitting .367 (18 for 49) with a .633 slugging percentage against him, thanks to four doubles and three home runs. Asked if he might need to use Ke...

Inside the Dodgers: One of the 2018 World Series teams is bad, and it’s not the Dodgers

Editor’s note: The following story is from today’s Inside the Dodgers newsletter. To receive the newsletter in your email, sign up here. Dave Dombrowski, the general manager of the Boston Red Sox, sat down with a local sports-talk station last week to announce he isn’t blowing up his team’s roster. Ostensibly this has been a legitimate question for the defending World Series champs. The Red Sox have played 22 “real” games since last October. They’re 9-13. Including the playoffs, the Red Sox play...

Dodgers just waiting for A.J. Pollock to get hot

MILWAUKEE — It’s not that A.J. Pollock has gotten off to a terrible start. He just hasn’t gotten off to a good one. Out of the starting lineup Sunday for only the third time in the Dodgers’ first 24 games, Pollock carried a .238 batting average to the bench with him. His on-base (.305) and slugging (.369) percentages lag well behind his career norms. Over the previous 11 games, he was just 6 for 33 (.182). “Honestly, it’s a long season. I kind of know the ups and downs of everything,” Pollock sa...

Alex Verdugo’s production has been strong for Dodgers despite limited playing time

MILWAUKEE — The Dodgers have a hitter who is 10 for 26 (.385) with runners on base, 6 for 12 (.500) with runners in scoring position and 5 for 8 (.625) when there are two outs and a runner in scoring position. “Wow,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said when read those numbers. “Who is that hitter?” It is Alex Verdugo who ranks sixth on the team in RBI while ranking 10th in plate appearances. Nine of Verdugo’s 13 RBI have come with two outs in an inning. “Yeah, I mean I knew I was hitting pretty we...

Consistent approach at the plate has Dodgers’ Cody Bellinger rolling

MILWAUKEE — Ten games into this season, Cody Bellinger led the majors in home runs, RBIs, slugging percentage, hits, total bases and runs. That blazing start wouldn’t go unnoticed, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said at the time. “This series and going forward,” Roberts said as the Dodgers began a four-game series in St. Louis. “Everyone watches the highlights and you’re not going to let the hot guy beat you. But for a young player, that’s where you have to still stay stubborn in the strike zone.”...

Hyun-Jin Ryu ready to join Dodgers’ rotation, but Rich Hill will have to wait

MILWAUKEE — Everyone ready to rejoin the Dodgers’ starting rotation, take one step forward. Not so fast, Rich Hill. The Dodgers will activate Hyun-Jin Ryu from the injured list and start him Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers. Ryu has been out since leaving his April 8 start in St. Louis with a mild groin injury. He threw a 40-pitch bullpen on Monday and was pronounced ready to return. Left-hander Clayton Kershaw was scheduled to start Saturday. He will now move back a day and start Sunday i...

Cody Bellinger, Justin Turner out of Dodgers’ lineup with leg injuries

LOS ANGELES — A big chunk of the Dodgers’ offense is day to day. Both Cody Bellinger and Justin Turner were out of the starting lineup Tuesday with leg injuries that might or might not sideline them for longer. Bellinger was hit in the right knee by a pitch in the third inning of Monday’s game. He was in the outfield Tuesday afternoon jogging around the perimeter of the warning track to test the knee. The results were not good enough to get him in the lineup. “Could he play? Possibly,” Dodgers m...

Dodgers’ Cody Bellinger exits game after being hit by a pitch on his knee

LOS ANGELES — Dodgers right fielder Cody Bellinger left Monday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds after three innings when he was hit by a pitch. With one out and a runner on first base, Bellinger faced a 1-and-1 count when he was struck on his left knee by a 95-mph fastball from Reds starter Luis Castillo. Bellinger immediately crumpled to the ground and was visited by Manager Dave Roberts and soft tissue specialist Yosuke Nakajima. The three chatted, and Bellinger was allowed to remain in the ...

Clayton Kershaw set to pitch in Double-A then join Dodgers rotation

ST. LOUIS — Clayton Kershaw’s final step before rejoining the Dodgers rotation will be taken in Tulsa, Okla. Kershaw is scheduled to make his second minor-league rehab start for the Double-A Tulsa Drillers on Tuesday night. The choice between Tulsa or another start with Triple-A Oklahoma City came down to a more favorable weather forecast and better facilities at home with the Drillers than on the road with OKC (which plays in Omaha). If everything goes well Tuesday, Kershaw could make his seaso...

Cody Bellinger leads another offensive barrage as Dodgers sweep Rockies

DENVER — Their starting pitcher couldn’t get through four innings. Their second baseman lost track of the number of outs and allowed a run to score. They used 17 pitchers in the series and their first reliever Sunday batted in the fifth inning. And they just kept on winning. Winners of the past six division titles, the Dodgers have announced their presence with authority once again in the National League West. Sunday’s 12-6 victory over the Colorado Rockies was their eighth in 10 games to start ...

Rich Hill tests knee with ‘uneventful’ return to the bullpen mound

DENVER — Rich Hill had one word to describe his first time on a pitcher’s mound since injuring his left knee. “Uneventful — which is good,” the Dodgers left-hander said after throwing a 20-pitch bullpen session Saturday afternoon. It was the first time Hill tested his sprained medial collateral ligament by throwing off the slope of a mound since the days after he injured his knee during a Cactus League game on March 17. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he didn’t watch the session but was told a...

Dodgers’ Cody Bellinger pushing for more hits after hot start against Diamondbacks

LOS ANGELES — Cody Bellinger overheard A.J. Pollock analyzing his two-run double that tied the game Sunday for the Dodgers in the bottom of the eighth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks. “Yours was a hit?” Bellinger interrupted from across the locker room. “They changed it,” Pollock replied with a smile. Errors often don’t lead to hits on the box score, but Pollock was already approaching second base when Diamondbacks outfielder Adam Jones bobbled the ground ball that went down the first-ba...

Dodgers’ Corey Seager caps return from dual surgeries with a home run

LOS ANGELES — In the 45 years since Dr. Frank Jobe performed the surgery for the first time, Corey Seager might have completed the smoothest recovery from Tommy John surgery in the history of the procedure. “It might be,” Seager said with a laugh after hitting a home run in his first game since undergoing both the elbow surgery and arthroscopic hip surgery. “Thank you. Glad it was for me.” As Seager progressed through spring training, checking off boxes first in workouts and then in games, there...

Julio Urías sticks to the plan in Dodgers’ exhibition rout of Angels

LOS ANGELES — Speaking to a gaggle of reporters before the Dodgers’ final exhibition game Tuesday, Manager Dave Roberts outlined the plan for starting pitcher Julio Urías: four innings in the game, followed by another “potential” inning in the bullpen. The Dodgers stuck to their plan. Urías tossed four perfect innings against the Angels in his final spring tuneup. He threw only 42 pitches, struck out four batters, then threw some cool-down pitches when it was all over. The Dodgers trounced the A...

2019 Dodgers season preview: Position by position

ROTATION Eleven pitchers started at least once for the Dodgers last season and the combined effort produced a National League-low 3.19 ERA. Nine of those starters are back (including reliever Scott Alexander). And the number doesn’t even include Julio Urias, who might have been the most impressive performer of the lot during spring training. Then there are Dustin May and Tony Gonsolin, top prospects who were unruffled facing major-league hitters in spring games. It is depth that could be the en...

Dodgers add reliever Justin Grimm to bullpen mix, might not be done

ANAHEIM – The Dodgers signed pitcher Justin Grimm to a minor league contract Sunday. He joined his new teammates at Angel Stadium, where a number 49 jersey was waiting. Manager Dave Roberts said Grimm will make his debut in relief of Kenta Maeda Monday night. It was no surprise the Dodgers went outside the organization to bolster their bullpen; the long-reliever-sized hole in their pitching staff is the final piece to their Opening Day roster. Yet even Grimm might not represent the Dodgers’ fina...
