spring!!!

The first day of spring - one of my favorite days! I have 8 trays of seedlings planted so far. Some are doing very well. A tray of wild flower seeds I collected are taking their time to sprout. No problem. Sometimes these take 30 days or so.I am working on planting my tomato seeds now. A few days late now for me. I have the pots clean and set in trays.  I’ve pulled out the seed packets I'll plant. Maybe I'll have time to plant tomorrow morning.Tomorrow I'll pick my up mother at the airport marki...

red-winged blackbirds return - a sign of spring

I was surprised to hear a red-winged blackbird today. Everything is snow covered and seems quite wintery still. I looked up when they returned to my yard in previous years:2015: March 272016: March 52018: February 252019: March 12I also looked at the site Journey North, a citizen reporting site. These dates fit with their observations. Some springs are late, some early. This looks like a pretty average one based on the blackbirds. [Author: kathy]

Tax preparers lured filers with false promise of big refunds, then hit them with fees, Illinois attorney general says

Michael Anderson and his wife, Kathy, spun his tax preparer's electronic "prize wheel" and won a promise from the company to double their refund. That never happened. Instead, the preparer charged the Andersons more than twice as much as Anderson says he was told, made mistakes on the federal return...

Let’s Be Awkward Friends Who Pray

It startled me the first time it happened. It was a Wednesday night my freshman year of college at the musty-smelling YMCA behind my dorm where the collegiate ministry I was involved in met for weekly worship and teaching. We milled around afterward in small groups, scuffing our feet on the thin, dingy carpet, laughing easy, procrastinating going back to whatever late-night studying or paper-writing awaited us. I was talking with my friend Kathy. We were probably sharing the highs and lows of th...

Comment on chocolate puddle cakes by Kathy

My son made these for dessert on Sunday night and said they were pretty easy. They were delicious and rich – I couldn’t finish mine. Pleasantly surprised at how good the left-over cake still was tonight (Tuesday) right out of the fridge. Dark and fudgy, dolloped with a little extra whipped cream – yum!

The Amazon Backlash

NY State Senator Michael Gianaris is leading the efforts to stop Amazon from opening up a large presence in the borough of Queens in NYC. I get that this makes for good politics at some level. Standing up for the taxpayer and expressing outrage at a massive tax giveaway to the one of the wealthiest companies in the world, run by one of the wealthiest people in the world, makes for great stump speeches. But there is one problem with all of that. The voters and taxpayers in Queens, particul...

Comment on baked orzo with eggplant and mozzarella by Kathy

I made this and it was delicious! Baked 25 minutes with foil, 15 without and the texture was really good. Added kalamata olives. Only change I would make next time is to omit the carrots but that’s just a personal preference.

"What's Your Name?"

by Justin Peters hen most of us think of John MacArthur we think of the precision of his preaching and the care with which he has handled God's word. We think of the courage he has displayed in interviews with Larry King and more recently Ben Shapiro as he has boldly declared unvarnished biblical truth and yet done so with love and compassion. All of these things are true. There is another aspect of John, though, that has had just as much impact upon me as has his preaching. His humility.Though I...

Kathy Sledge on the 40th Anniversary of the Joyful Song, 'We Are Family'

None Four decades after it unfairly became a casualty of the "Disco Sucks" movement, maligned as a cheesy artifact of the era like high platform soled shoes and white polyester suits, Sister Sledge's 1979 album We Are Family remains one of the most solid soul collections ever put on wax. It arrived at a pivotal moment in the career of Debbie, Joni, Kim and Kathy Sledge, the four sisters from Philadelphia: after two albums (Circle of Love and Together) and one top 40 R&B single ("Love Don't Go ...

Make sure you use baking powder, not soda. I spaced out and used baking soda. They looked so beautiful and crispy but I had to throw them out. Luckily just made them for two of us!

Personal History (1986-1998)

Amy discovered the photo above a few weeks ago, and it's stirred up a host of memories from a pivotal period in my life that I feel compelled to document here--I don't expect anyone to read all this, but I suspect I'll enjoy re-reading it myself some day. The photo shows the two of us in 1991 in our first apartment in San Francisco. It was $750 a month for a nice one-bedroom on the Panhandle. She was--and is--completely adorable, and I look at that face and fall in love all over again. I have ...

Review: A Spark of Light

Summary: The warm fall day starts like any other at the Center—a women’s reproductive health services clinic—its staff offering care to anyone who passes through its doors. Then, in late morning, a desperate and distraught gunman bursts in and opens fire, taking all inside hostage. After rushing to the scene, Hugh McElroy, a police hostage negotiator, sets up a perimeter and begins making a plan to communicate with the gunman. As his phone vibrates with incoming text messages he glances at it an...

James MacDonald to Take Sabbatical to Focus on Peacemaking

Last night, several sources told me that James MacDonald had resigned. I asked church spokeswoman Sherri Smith about those reports and she responded that MacDonald had not resigned. However, MacDonald was about to make a change. This morning Harvest Bible Chapel posted the following Elder Update: Dear Harvest Family, We have tried a variety of different strategies to address external criticisms over the past several years. It has become apparent that these efforts have failed to fully identify a...
