Blue Bayou Review: An Urgent Immigrant Story Told With A Thoughtful, But Heavy Hand

"Where are you from?"It's a question that immediately puts Justin Chon's Antonio LeBlanc on edge, and which he avoids answering in his uneasy job interview in "Blue Bayou," Chon's third directorial effort. Antonio was born in Korea, but the only home he's ever known is the Louisiana backwaters. Adopted at three years old by white parents, Antonio spent his childhood jumping from foster home to foster home, until he built a family for himself with his loving, maybe all-too forgiving wife Kathy (a...

Justin Chon And Alicia Vikander Search For The Definition Of Home In Blue Bayou [Interview]

Justin Chon has come a long way since he wowed Sundance audiences with his 2017 film "Gook." The writer and director of "Blue Bayou" is many years removed from being "that funny Asian guy" from "Twilight" who directed and starred in the provocative black-and-white drama about two Korean-American brothers on the first day of the 1992 L.A. race riots. It wasn't long until Chon had firmly established himself as one of the exciting Asian-American indie filmmakers to watch, following up with the 2019...

The Blue Light

Back in 1992, preparing to do laundry, I noticed that The Blue Light was torn. Not just torn, but faded, worn thin, and its cheap poly batting is no longer fluffy. Time for an upgrade, I thought. The Blue Light was a comforter. Almost twenty years old in 1992, it was given to us by my parents before our move to the mountains. I chose it from the Sears catalogue—a homey blue and white printed gingham check—and it was our Christmas present. It became The Blue Light on our first...

The Chilling True Story Behind The Amityville Horror

It is perhaps the most famous haunted house in American history: 112 Ocean Avenue, a Dutch Colonial house situated in Amityville, Long Island. In 1974, a young man named Ronald DeFeo Jr. shot and killed six members of his family. A year later, George and Kathy Lutz and their three children moved into the house -- only to flee after 28 days, claiming the house was haunted. The story first inspired a book and then a movie, both called "The Amityville Horror." And this was no mere ghost story, oh n...

Pasadena’s Delano Robinson dies at 88

Delano Catherine Hadley Robinson lived alongside two brothers who broke historic barriers en route to paving her own legacy of compassion in Pasadena. Some called her great, but to others she was great-great — grandma that is. Robinson, wife of Olympian Matthew “Mack” Robinson and sister-in-law of baseball legend Jackie Robinson, was a common sight in the community she dearly served since 1955, when she first called Pasadena home. She was so beloved that Councilman John Kennedy interrupted ...

"The White House called the event a 'dignified transfer' of the bodies; rather than a 'ceremony' it was described as a 'solemn movement.' The precise language was so that families did not feel obliged to attend..."

"...  officials said. Biden clasped his right hand to his chest when the order to present arms came with each transfer as military officers saluted. His eyes were locked on the cases as they were carried to the transfer vehicles, occasionally bowing his head and appearing to close his eyes. Family members of all 13 victims were represented but it is not clear if all spoke to Biden during a private meeting....  The father of one of the marines [said] 'They sent my son over there as a paper pushe...

Comment on baked farro with summer vegetables by Kathy

In reply to Jen Handler. I made it last night using Royal Blend rice, which includes brown rice among others. It was delicious! The rice said to cook 15 minutes so I did 25 as per Deb’s instructions but it wasn’t enough. I used 1 C rice and 1 1/2 cups water and it took about 40 minutes to cook. Still had some water but once i broiled it for 5 minutes it dried out. I followed the recipe for everything else.

Tombstone Lakes Hike & Camping Trip in Kananaskis

Alberta’s Kananaskis Country offers an incredible diversity of hiking experiences that are almost on par with what you’ll find in the Rocky Mountain national parks – specifically Banff, Jasper, Yoho, and Kootenay. Many  of the trails are busier than they used to be – probably because so many people have discovered the joys of hiking thanks to COVID. But you can still lose the masses if you choose a hike that’s a little longer. The Tombstone Lakes hike in Elbow-Sheep Wildland Provincial Park is j...

Borderline bar shooter — a Marine vet — hated civilians, college students, says investigative report

VENTURA — An investigative report on a 2018 mass shooting during a Southern California bar’s “Country College Night” found the likely motive of the military veteran who carried out the attack was disdain for civilians and especially college students, a newspaper said. Abbott vetoes demonstrate continued antipathy toward #cjreform, bootlicking toward police unions

My better half, Kathy Mitchell, posted this on Facebook about Gov. Abbott's criminal-justice vetoes, and since I hadn't written anything on the subject yet, with her permission I'm re-posting it here. For a more sanguine perspective on what Grits has called the worst Texas legislative session on criminal justice in the 21st century, see Marc Levin's column in the SA Express News summarizing everything that passed which reformers might consider a (small) victory. Rep. Pacheco's HB 385 may be the ...

John Boyega: Star Wars Return a ‘No-Brainer’ if Key People Involved

Now that the dust has settled on 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, you might be wondering if any of its cast members would want to hop back into the legendary franchise. Well, it seems one of the film’s lead actors, John Boyega, would under certain circumstances. In a resurfaced clip from an interview conducted by Jake’s Takes in 2020 (via Twitter user @PalpyYT), Boyega says it would be a “no-brainer” if President of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy, filmmaker J.J. Abrams, and the...
