Giant Flywheel Project In Scotland Could Prevent UK Blackouts (slashdot)

An anonymous reader quotes a report from The Guardian: A giant flywheel in north-east Scotland could soon help to prevent blackouts across Britain by mimicking the effect of a power station but without using fossil fuels. The trailblazing project near Keith in Moray, thought to cost about 25 million British pounds, will not generate electricity or produce carbon emissions -- but it could help keep the lights on by stabilizing the energy grid's electrical frequency. 2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road Review: Great for Playing in the Mud!

2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road In Our Opinion: The 2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road is the newest member of the automaker's TRD family. While the off-road capability is a given, we were taken back by how comfortable this RAV4 is on dry pavement. It was a pleasant surprise to discover this off-road rig was still pretty good in the city. Although we are not sold on the exterior styling, the interior is sharp and that makes up for it. Exterior Styling 74 Interior Layout 87 ...

‘I saw the devil today’: Prosecutors, family members confront Golden State Killer in plea agreement hearing

For seven hours Monday, family members of the dozens of victims of the Golden State Killer listened while he croaked out his guilty pleas. With a plastic visor covering his face, Joseph James DeAngelo Jr. — mouth agape, seated between his attorneys and dressed in an orange jail jumpsuit, sitting behind a table on top of a stage in the middle of a university ballroom — pleaded guilty to 13 murders and 13 kidnappings he committed over about 13 years across California. In case after case, DeAngelo,...

California’s alleged Golden State Killer set to plead guilty

Senior Moments: Finding solace in the sound of a horn

Taps came home to me on Memorial Day. It was just a short walk up the street to a neighbor’s front lawn. Their friend, Keith Beyer, an Army trumpet player who trains trumpeters for military funerals, stood tall and straight as the sound of his horn sent out a breath of peace. You could almost hear the silent reflections of the gathered neighbors, masked and standing six feet from each other, hands over hearts filled with stories. I was picturing the flag covering my husband’s coffin. Perhaps the...

Top 10 Highlights From Blackhawks’ 2019-20 Season

Gosh, I miss hockey! While the NHL is looking at ways to finish out the NHL season and reward the Stanley Cup, we’ve all been without hockey for quite some time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Chicago Blackhawks’ last contest was a 6-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Mar. 11. To that end, this seems like a perfect time to feature highlights from the Blackhawks’ shortened 2019-20 season. For those interested, I’ve included my similar piece from the 2018-19 season below. It’s always kind ...

Blues’ Biggest Draft Misses of the 2000s

Before Doug Armstrong became the general manager of the St. Louis Blues, the club had some struggles in the 2000s decade that allowed them to have some premium picks at the top of multiple drafts. The early 2000s saw the Blues have some quality regular seasons that led to late first-round picks, similar to the last five seasons for the club. The middle of the 2000s saw them have some lost seasons leading to early to middle first-round picks. St. Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstro...

Meet the Steal of the 2020 NHL Draft

We normally don’t do the Steal of the Draft this early. But what we’re going through isn’t normal under any circumstances. With the distinct possibility of the NHL Draft going at the time the NHL Combine normally goes, we have to be ready for anything and everything even if the timeline makes no sense. We can debate all we want about the logistics and if it’s right to hold an early draft. But the point is we need to be ready in the event it does. We at the Hockey Writers will be ready no m...
