Michael Jordan hates rap music, with one exception

NBA Basketball Michael Jordan is one of the most name-dropped athletes in rap history. Kendrick Lamar has a song named after him, Drake and Future’s hit “Jumpman” is based on his brand and hardly alone in worshiping the Bulls legend.Despite all of his notoriety in the rap industry, the Hall of Famer apparently hates the music genre. Rapper N.O.R.E. told ...

Baby Keem Makes His Move

In the movie Home Alone, an eight-year-old kid turns his house into a nightmare hellscape of inhuman-torture booby traps. This requires serious suspension of disbelief. If you’re a kid watching Home Alone, it’s a fantasy. If you’re an adult, you can’t help but notice that the booby traps are the work of set designers, stunt teams, and special-effects people. Kids can’t do all that on their own. Baby Keem’s whole story is a bit like that.

Freddie Gibbs Responds To Kendrick Lamar On New Track “Vice Lord Poetry”

Freddie Gibbs and Kendrick Lamar are two of the best rappers in the game right now, and it sure seems like Freddie is coming for Kendrick on his new track “Vice Lord Poetry.” Over the beat from Drake’s Certified Lover Boy opener “Champagne Poetry,” Gibbs raps, “The Earth ain’t big enough for both of us, you gotta get done/ They say they smokin’ top fives, but you ain’t burnt up the one/ Fuck n****s talking ’bout?/ Like every time I hit the booth I don’t leave that bitch with a body count.”

Baby Keem & Kendrick Lamar – “Range Brothers”

Today, the buzzy young LA rapper Baby Keem releases his official debut album The Melodic Blue. Keem is the cousin of Kendrick Lamar, and The Melodic Blue is the first project from Kendrick’s new “at service company pgLang. Two weeks ago, Kendrick, who’s been largely absent from rap for the last few years, showed up on Keem’s stomping, triumphant single “Family Ties,” and he immediately jumped back into rap’s alpha-dog race. On another song from The Melodic Blue, Kendrick is back again.

Shang-Chi: The Album Is Here To Celebrate Asian And Asian American Artists

Get ready to rock out to the official motion picture soundtrack for "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings." When "Black Panther" released its soundtrack in 2018, it incorporated a who's who list of Black musical artists, led by Kendrick Lamar. "Shang-Chi" is following suit with a soundtrack that aims for its own cultural authenticity. It has roped in Asia...

Rap’s Alpha-Dog Race Heats Up Again

“This year, the best story in rap — and the best story in music, and maybe the best story in popular culture in general — is the three-way dance that Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and Kanye West have been dancing.” I wrote that in this space in March 2015, more than six years ago. At the time, Drake was right in between If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late and What A Time To Be Alive. Kendrick Lamar had just released To Pimp A Butterfly. Kanye West was about a year away from The Life Of Pablo. It was a...

So there’s no new Kendrick Lamar music of his own on the immediate horizon, but he has come out of hiding for his cousin Baby Keem. Today, Baby Keem is releasing a new single called “Family Ties” that...

50 years later, Apple+ offers a fresh look at ‘1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything’

Think about the year 1971 and some things come immediately to mind: the war in Vietnam. the presidency of Richard M. Nixon and, well, after that, the answers can begin to splinter off into a hundred different directions. Danielle Peck, one of the producers and directors of the docuseries “1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything” knows that the date in the title isn’t an obvious marker in popular music’s journey through the 20th century. But Peck, director-producer Asif Kapadia, and the rest...
