MY SPRING VISIT TO SNUG HARBOR FARM IN MAINE

A couple of weekends ago I was thrilled to have been invited to Snug Harbor Farm on the coast of Maine for a book signing. A gem of a specialty nursery. and worth a visit if you can make it - just an hour and a half north of Boston. We have some wonderful nurseries and sources for plants and accessories here in the Northeast but one, in particular, is quite extraordinary. Snug Harbor Farm located in Kennebunk Maine is one of the more special places worth a visit in you ever find yourself ...

Best glamping resorts for summer

The term “glamping” almost sounds like a snide put down from hard-core backpackers towards bougie people in nature. “Oh, they got BATHROOMS at that place?” a salty, grizzled hiker might say. “That’s not camping. That’s glamping!” But you know what? Sometimes it’s nice to take a hot shower, sip a couple glasses of wine, and retire into 1,000-thread-count sheets at the end of a long day of outdoor activity. And if that means people who don’t mind going a week without changing t-shirts look down...

Elder Bushes are gone but family Maine retreat to stay alive

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine (AP) — “Poppy” and “Bar” are gone, but the passing of George H. W. and Barbara Bush won’t mean an end to children’s laughter, splashing in the pool, barking dogs or clinking horseshoes at the family’s property on the Maine coast. The former first couple’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will continue to enjoy […]

Christmas spirit in New England

Whether it’s Maine’s foliage in autumn or vacations on Cape Cod in the summer, New England is the ideal place to really immerse yourself in the seasons. This is especially true when it comes to winter. Yeah, New England winters are cold. But they’re also filled with perfect snowball snow, Christmas cookies, festive lights, and traditional holiday cheer unlike anywhere else in the country. Nothing exudes Christmas spirit like settling into an 18th-century inn by the fireplace, attending a trad...

Where to go in Maine for lobster

When fall starts creeping into winter, it’s time for lobster lovers to visit Maine’s coastal towns. Sure, the weather can get a little dicey (the average temperature in November and December hovers around 30-40 degrees Fahrenheit), but that’s what sweaters are for. Bundle up and head north because late October, November, and December is the end of lobster season. “A lot of people in the industry start to ramp up in late October because the lobster have mostly molted, so they aren’t hiding and...

Where to camp in Maine this fall

There is no place quite like the coast of Maine. Its wild beauty and distinct tranquility make it the ideal camping destination, but summertime seems to get all the attention. After Labor Day, though, the crowds thin and pesky bugs disappear, and the trees lining coastal Route 1 turn vibrant shades of burnt orange and gold that never fail to inspire. This is a side of Maine that you don’t want to miss. Camping allows you to take full advantage of the still-sunny days and crisp nights before ...

Making a pitch for a centrist California GOP

To: [email protected] From: [email protected]   June 24, 2018 Kennebunkport-adjacent   Chipster! Salutations from the lobster coast. Remember those Dartmouth spring breaks gallivanting about the State O’ Maine in our halcyon youth? Good golly, talk about politics making strange bedfellows. I’ve had an L.L. Bean moccasin fetish ever since Molly … well. Bygones. She’s hitched to that Duke hedge fund guy by now anyway, living in Palm Beach splendor, and we all know the cabbage earned by a mere freelan...

From there we went to Kennebunkport. I can see why the Bushs love it. It is a really quaint harbor town with cutesy shops and restaurants like other seaside places. We wandered the shops and then ate at a waterside rustic establishment. I had my second

Mainers don't say

Maine-isms are very much a thing; we basically have our own take on the English language, which among other identifiers helps us tell immediately who’s from here and who’s from Boston. We’re quick with a response to “Chuppta?” and love a good bed lunch (midnight snack). Likewise, there are also loads of thing you’ll never hear a Mainer say. Here are just a few of them. 1. Their “R’s”. 2. “I love driving Route 1 in the summer!” 3. “What time does L.L.Bean open and close?” 4. “Nah, I don’t nee...
