Thinking of Trying Keto? First, Read What These 3 Registered Dietitians Have to Say

The ketogenic diet, aka keto, is still going strong in the weight-loss world. The super-low-carb diet restricts sugars and carbohydrates, forcing your liver to burn fats and create compounds called ketones to use for energy instead.

The keto diet helps men – not women – lose weight, new research suggests

Comment on salted peanut butter cookies by Grace

I just made these yesterday, for my brother’s birthday. He’s doing Keto, so I made one batch with Swerve brown sugar-substitute, and another with dark brown sugar (because I’m not doing Keto.) The ones with the sugar-substitute actually did a better job holding the rounded shape, though they were lumpier. The one’s with real sugar deflated as soon as I took them out of the oven (but still tasted amazing.) If I had to make them with the sugar substitute again, I would see if I could use less suga...

Followups and Updates: The Eloquence of Coincidence (OT)

• Yesterday's post made me realize that I am not giving my current food experiment a decent chance. I am cheating too much, so I don't get to find out if the WFPB plan actually makes you feel better. Thanks to John Gillooly for asking the question. I really need to redouble my commitment so that I get good data on it, with my statistically insignificant but personally very significant experimental sample of one. One commenter said he eats nothing but meat and has never felt better. I should poin...

Nikkei cuisine and where to find it

“Nikkei” just sounds like a word people are going to use wrong. You can almost hear a half dozen people sitting around a violet-lit table in some SoHo hotspot asking stuff like, “Is the octopus tonight Nikkei? Perhaps you could go back and ask the chef.” While the waiter looks on confused another chimes in, “Kylie ONLY eats Nikkei now. It’s like sushi, but lower-carb.” “And, like, all the fish has to be flown in from Peru,” says another. “And they mix it with six different kinds of pomegranat...

Much-maligned

Much-maligned Submitted by mikedilger on March 13, 2019 - 1:06pm. Bread these days is much maligned.  The Paleo diet people think grains were a mistake.  The low-carb people think carbohydrates are the root of all evil.  And the gluten scare mongers imagine they all have celiac disease.  Even mainstream dietitians warn of the high glycemic index of bread.  What is a baker to do?Many of these folks can't be convinced otherwise. They've accepted their beliefs about grains, carbs, or g...

Why You Don’t Need A Fancy Diet To Lose Weight

In our consumer-centric society, marketers have been delivering weight loss to the public in the form of branded diets for so long, many people forget they can bypass the special packaging and go straight to the information and create a DIY diet. If diets weren’t given memorable names, nobody would be interested in trying them out. For instance, nobody wants to “eat plenty of fat, consume less than 20 grams of carbs per day, and minimize protein intake,” but they’ll jump on the keto die...
