Young Black And Gifted (Azariah x Kidd Called Quest) – “The Second Coming” (Album Review)

Young Black and Gifted, the rap duo comprised of Azariah on the mic and producer Kidd Called Quest, dropped “The Second Coming,” a fourteen track album that dives deep into the thoughts, struggles, and passions of a young black man and father. Azariah has a slower delivery akin to some of what many consider the Gold School Legends. Personally, his voice reminds me of Shai Linne (a name I expect few of you to know), with a hint of Andre 3000. During my first listen, I wasn’t terribly impresse...

Trump’s Bible photo op splits white evangelical loyalists into two camps

Ardent supporters saw the photo op as a blow against evil while others saw the gesture as cynical and a ployOn Monday when Donald Trump raised overhead a Bible – the Sword of the Spirit, to believers – he unwittingly cleaved his loyal Christian supporters into two camps. His most ardent evangelical supporters saw it as a blow against evil and described his walk from the White House to St John’s Episcopal church, over ground violently cleared of protesters, as a “Jericho walk”.The Rev Johnnie Moo...

Coronavirus cases aboard 2nd Navy ship still rising, now 64

The number of coronavirus cases aboard the USS Kidd rose to 64 as the Navy destroyer pulled into port at San Diego on Tuesday to get medical care for the crew and to disinfect and decontaminate the ship. The Kidd is the second Navy ship to have an outbreak of the disease while at sea, the other being the USS Theodore Roosevelt, an aircraft carrier that has been docked at Guam for a month. The Roosevelt has more than 900 sailors with confirmed cases of COVID-19, but the entire crew has now been...

The United States' top Navy officer has recommended the reinstatement of the aircraft carrier captain fired for sending a fraught email to commanders pleading for faster action to protect his crew from a coronavirus outbreak, officials familiar with the investigation said. ICE agents shouldn’t present themselves as police officers

These isolating days, there’s hardly ever a knock on the door. But visitors used to be common enough, and one day they will again be. So if after that knock, you heard someone call out, “We’re police investigating a crime and just want to ask a few questions. Can we come in?,” you’d likely comply with the request, even if no warrant were produced. Or how about: “We’re police and there is an issue with your car. Can you come outside?” Your likely reply as you stepped out the door: “Sure, officers...

Lawsuit targets ICE practice of posing as police

In the fall of 2018, when an officer came looking for Osny Sorto-Vasquez Kidd at his Hacienda Heights home, he and his family complied. The officer said she was a detective with local police and that she was looking for “a dangerous man out to get us,” Kidd said. Her clothing said “police,” and she showed the family a photo of the bad guy. But the photo was apparently fake. And the woman wasn’t a detective. She was an agent with U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement, and she arrested Kidd, an...

Coronavirus Doesn’t Delay Property Taxes In California

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The coronavirus has delayed income taxes, mortgage payments and evictions in California. But not property taxes. Friday was the deadline to pay those taxes without incurring a hefty penalty and Gov. Gavin Newsom let the date pass without taking any action. Business groups had urged Newsom to use his executive authority to delay the deadline or at least waive all penalties for late payments. Local governments pushed back. Property tax payments are their largest source of...

How a Lakers coaching staff of strangers blended to lead the West’s top team

CHICAGO — The Lakers might not be where they are today if not for a very crucial task that helps keep them humming. It’s an area that falls under the expertise of assistant coach Mike Penberthy, who once won a title with the Shaq-and-Kobe-era Lakers. When coaching staff meetings invariably bog down with the minutiae of game planning, he’s often the one who makes the decision to shake things up. “I’ll be like, ‘You know what, I think we need some donuts today,’” he said. “I’ll grab one of the you...

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope shakes off bumpy start, finds perfect fit with Lakers

PHILADELPHIA — It was meant to be a putback. An easy shot. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope threw the ball back up toward the rim almost as quickly as he collected the rebound. Then, his heart sank as the ball stuck between the rim and the backboard – an unlikely result that added to his run of misfortune whenever he tried to do something that’s come naturally for so much of his life: score. This was not the plan. Feeling a special season ahead, Caldwell-Pope devoted more time than ever this offseason t...

Doncic, Hardaway lead Mavericks over Trail Blazers, 120-112

Doncic drained a career-best eight 3s on his way to 35 points, Tim Hardaway Jr. added 29 and the Mavericks beat Portland 120-112 on Friday night to avoid getting swept at home by the Trail Blazers. Doncic had eight rebounds and seven assists in the young Slovenian's first chance to tie Kidd's Dallas career record of 21 triple-doubles. As long as the next one comes before Feb. 28, Doncic will have at least three times as many triple-doubles before age 21 as the next person on the list -...

What To Do In London After Your First Trip

London can feel at times like a dignified, obese man and all the people in it red blood cells getting by just enough to avoid causing a heart attack. You can meet him for a moment and see his proud hat, notice the odor, and after a trip or two think you’ve seen enough not to see more again. This is where I found myself, somewhere in the third or fourth time I visited London, England. Knowing this year I’d be going again, for the (probably 8 or 9th time) since you voted it Best City in 2019, I t...

How to Better Understand Your Emotions When You’ve Been Numb Too Long

Your emotions are a part of you, and they shouldn’t be ignored. So much is written about emotions — how to understand them, how to control them, or how they can help or hinder you. Just look at the self-help section of a bookstore or the cover of the multitude of grab mags at the checkout counter of your frequented food store. All can be helpful, but they are not always the truth, and are not personalized for you. So, what are emotions, really, and why do we have them in the first place? Emo...

Rumor: Lakers hired Jason Kidd to lure Giannis Antetokounmpo

New Lakers coach Frank Vogel said he wanted Jason Kidd because Kidd is a good coach. Steve Popper of Newsday: the person familiar with the Lakers process said something else: that Kidd was brought to Los Angeles to attract Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Lakers when he becomes a free agent in two years when the Bucks star could become an unrestricted free agent. Things I believe: 1.

Whicker: Frank Vogel finds himself a stranger in an increasingly strange Lakers franchise

EL SEGUNDO — Allen Edwards and the other Kentucky players lived at the Wildcat Lodge. Right across the street was Memorial Coliseum, where Adolph Rupp used to coach and where Rick Pitino’s offices were, in 1996. Edwards and friends would often be going out while a group of droopy-eyed coaches was just coming in. One was Frank Vogel. “I’d say, ‘Really? You’ve been over there all this time?’ And then he and the rest of them would go back early the next morning,” said Edwards, now the coach at Wyom...

Lakers hire Vogel; no news on Kidd

The Los Angeles Lakers hired Frank Vogel as their head coach on Monday, confirming news that was widely reported Saturday. However, the press release announcing the move made no mention of the other alleged piece of the Lakers' new coaching setup. Multiple media outlets reported Saturday that Jason Kidd would be hired as an assistant coach on Vogel's staff, but Kidd wasn't mentioned Monday in the Lakers' announcement.
