Endangered bluefin tuna sold for $3.1 billion to sushi tycoon

A recent predawn auction at Tokyo’s new fish market brought a record-breaking bid for the endangered bluefin tuna. Sushi tycoon Kiyoshi Kimura, who owns the Sushi Zanmai chain, paid $3.1 million for the enormous fish, more than double the price from five years ago. Kimura’s Kiyomura Corp has won the annual action in the past, but the high price of the tuna this year definitely surprised the sushi king. Nonetheless, Kiyomura says: “the quality of the tuna I bought is the best.” The 612-pound (27...

Man purchases $3.1 million tuna, has some ... regrets

Kimura purchased the fish at an auction at Tokyo's newest fish market. In 2015, Kimura purchased a fish approximately half its weight and at half the price. "The tuna looks so tasty and very fresh, but I think I did too much,” Kimura later told reporters.

HIROSHIMA HERO. Heiwa’s ‘No.10’ Kawasaki W650 Bobber

Written by Martin Hodgson In an industrial area near the wharves, on a white weather beaten wall, is an old Castrol sign that looks like it marks the spot of an old English workshop. Step inside and the ’60s Triumphs and girder forks leaning up against a Pre War drill press only seem to confirm the earlier suspicions. But Newcastle upon Tyne this is not, welcome to Hiroshima and the now world famous workshop of custom builder extraordinaire Kengo Kimura. His Heiwa Motorcycles are instantly ...

4 PLAY. Meet Heiwa’s Nimble Montesa 4RIDE Scrambler

Written by Andrew Jones Richard Branson once said, “I have enjoyed life a lot more by saying ’yes’ than by saying ‘no’.” It is a pretty simplistic approach to surviving this mortal coil, but it sure is an interesting way of looking at things. Sadly, ‘no’ was exactly what Heiwa’s Kengo Kimura said when a customer first suggested a scrambler build based on a brand new Honda-Powered Montesa 4RIDE. Like us, Kengo saw it as a rather esoteric bike that he liked, but one he’d never really considered...

George Takei wants his legacy to boldly go beyond ‘Star Trek’ with ‘Allegiance’

George Takei has been famous for more than 50 years. First for his longstanding portrayal of Mr. Sulu on the “Star Trek” TV series and its spin-offs, and later as an unexpectedly relevant social media presence. Add in his fame as a voice for the gay and Asian-American communities, liberal politics and, most surprisingly, Howard Stern’s radio show and he has plenty of credits with which to populate his Wikipedia page. But Takei would like you to know something else about him, a passion project in...

Editor’s Choice: An Alternative Top 10 for 2017

As each year winds down we sharpen our pencils, trawl through our data and whip up our annual Bike EXIF Top Ten. But because that list is based purely on page views and social media activity, some of our personal favorites don’t always make the cut. So, as has become tradition, we’ve compiled a follow up list—an Editor’s Choice that ignores the numbers and favors the heart. It’s a nod to those builders that we feel deserve recognition, to trends that we’d like to see take off in 2018, and to ...

Exclusive: Heiwa’s Mooneyes-winning Triumph TR6

If you want a snapshot of Japan’s incredible custom culture, you’ll find it at the annual Yokohama Hot Rod Custom Show. This year’s Mooneyes show (as it’s known) happened less than a week ago, attracting fans from the world over. A win at Mooneyes is one of the most prestigious accolades on the circuit. But we weren’t surprised when we heard that Kengo Kimura took home top honors this year. Kimura-san—the hands and mind behind Heiwa MC—is one of the top craftsmen in the world today. This 197...

In the face of fire: California Episcopalians, evacuations, homeless and undocumented

From Episcopal News Service: Episcopalians joined their neighbors Dec. 4 in fleeing the swift advance of the Thomas Fire that has burned from the mountains near Ojai, California, into the city of Ventura on the Pacific Ocean. “It was like watching the sun rise over the mountains last night,” said the Rev. Greg Kimura, rector of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Ojai. “The whole horizon above the mountains was glowing but it wasn’t the sun; it was the fire.” Kimura, whose phone lit up with an emer...

Japan's automakers tuning up to rekindle youthful passion for cars

The unassuming rest stop is famous to car enthusiasts as a temple of the country's motor culture, but it also illustrates a "youth" problem that auto companies such as Toyota Motor Corp and Nissan Motor Co are scrambling to address. The crowd last Friday - around 50 supercar fans who huddled around the back of a loading truck to get a first glimpse of the latest Lamborghini Huracan Performante delivered days before to collector Takeshi Kimura - were mainly men in their 40s and 50s. "Today's yo...

BMW x Heiwa: The R nineT Scrambler Custom Project

BMW has an illustrious history of working with Japanese customizers. Witness the extraordinary R nineT Custom Project of three years ago, with Shiro Nakajima, Brat Style, Hidemo and Cherry’s Company. And then the wild K 1600 GTLs built by Ken’s Factory and Hot Dock. In September 2016, BMW decided it was time to give Heiwa a crack of the whip. It’s the shop owned by Kengo Kimura, in Hiroshima on the island of Honshū, a five-hour ride west of Tokyo. “I had never customized a BMW, or even owned...

Richard Feynman and The Connection Machine

One of the most popular pieces of writing on our site is Long Now co-founder Danny Hillis ’ remembrance of building an experimental computer with theoretical physicist Richard Feynman . It’s easy to see why: Hillis’ reminisces about Feynman’s final years as they worked together on the Connection Machine are at once illuminating and poignant, and paint a picture of a man who was beloved as much for his eccentricity as his genius. Man Buys Single Fish For More Than Half A Million Dollars

A massive bluefin tuna sold for more than half a million dollars on Thursday during a famous auction held annually in Japan. Kiyoshi Kimura, sushi mogul and owner of Kiyomura Co, bought the 467-pound bluefin for 74.2 million yen (about $642,000) during Tsukiji fish market’s first auction of 2017, a widely celebrated event each year in Tokyo. Kimura’s bid this year is the second highest ever recorded at Tsukiji. The top bid of all time, which also belongs to Kimura, was nearly $1.8 million for a...

Japan's 'Tuna King' wins annual auction for $636,000

Japan's self-styled "Tuna King" has done it again -- paying more than $600,000 for a single fish. Sushi entrepreneur Kiyoshi Kimura paid top price at the first auction of the new year at Tokyo's Tsukiji fish market on Thursday, bagging a prized bluefin tuna for an eye-watering 74.2 million yen ($636,000). At that price a single piece of fatty tuna sushi would cost roughly $85, or 25 times the $3.4 that Kimura charges for the product at his 51 stores across Japan.

A Lesson in Sano: Heiwa’s Kawasaki W650

While most of us are trying to shake off the festive season’s indulgence, I’d wager that Kengo Kimura is already back in his workshop. The master craftsman behind Heiwa MC has no shortage of orders, despite being in the midst of a shifting landscape. We asked Kimura-san how things are going over in Tokyo: he tells us that the Japanese scene doesn’t place as much importance on manufacturing standards as it used to, and that 1970s American culture has invaded the scene. As a result, some custo...

Tsunehisa Kimura

You probably recognize the poster on the right, for the movie Oblivion (which I quite liked). On the left is a work from the 70s by artist Tsunehisa Kimura, and yes, I think we can see where the inspiration for the visual on the movie poster came from. Found via this post, that includes a few more examples of Kimura’s work — and you’ll find much more in this Google image search.

Louisiana's Missing Tsunami Stones

The flooding now going on in Louisiana, following something like 20" of rain over two days, is a reminder that humans have short memories and that we tend to create perverse incentives go encourage bad behavior.Extinction of memory.  I have called it the first thing to go extinct. Perhaps no one has written about it as well as John Steinbeck in East of Eden, when he talks about California's long-repeating drought cycles:I have spoken of the rich years when the rainfall was plentiful. But there ...

Custom Bikes Of The Week—League Of Nations Edition

This week we’ve got a Gold Wing from Sweden, a Cagiva from Portugal, a KTM from the USA, a Triumph from Japan, and a Ducati from Spain. How did we manage before Google Translate? Cagiva Alazzurra by Capêlos Garage Impeccable is a word that gets tossed around quite a bit here: We’re constantly bombarded with bikes that up the stakes and redefine the term. This week, impeccability comes in the form of a 1987 Cagiva Alazzurra from Capêlos Garage in Porto, Portugal. Because there isn’t a bolt o...

Take a Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Ferrari F40 Snow Drift Video

Red Bull has released a behind-the-scenes look at the making of “A Day in the Life,” the video that featured a Ferrari F40 drifting its way up a snowy mountainside. While the rare supercar appears to be adept at carving up the snowy landscape, the new video reveals the struggles the team went through to capture the perfect shots. In the original video, driver Takeshi Kimura dons his winter gear before heading to “Snow Camp” at Japan’s Ryuoo Ski Park in a Ferrari F40. That winter gear includes a ...

Watch a Ferrari F40 Drift in the Snow (W/Video)

There’s something wildly entertaining about seeing a supercar taken out of its natural habitat (Fiorano or Rodeo Drive are two examples) to another, completely different setting. We did it with our “long-term” Lamborghini Huracan (#MTLambo) and now the folks at Red Bull have done the same, albeit with a far more expensive and rare Italian supercar — the Ferrari F40. Red Bull Japan recently released a documentary titled “A Day in the Life” featuring an F40 that heads to “Snow Camp” at the Ryuoo S...

All Class: Heiwa’s stunning custom Shovelhead

It’s hard to describe the Japanese style of custom building. But it’s easy to spot: the bikes usually have a timeless and elegant feel, with everything in its place. Trends and fashions are noticeably less important than in the West. In the pantheon of Japanese bike building, Kengo Kimura of Heiwa Motorcycles is royalty. No one does ‘slammed-and-bobbed’ quite like Heiwa—whether it’s old British iron, or modern staples such as the Yamaha SR400. ‘Bull Pigeon’ is the latest Harley-Davidson to r...
