A vegan fast-casual chain you've never heard of is expanding nationwide — and that should scare legacy brands

Steve Heeley, CEO of the healthy fast-casual chain Veggie Grill, is betting he can make vegan food not just palatable, but "craveable." Founded in 2007, Veggie Grill serves burgers, sandwiches, and salads that have fewer calories than traditional fast-food — and happen to be vegan. The chain takes familiar foods, like buffalo wings and Caesar salad, and swaps out ingredients with plant-based substitutes.  "There are certain perceptions around the word 'vegan.' It means you have to deny yourself...

PepsiCo has experimented with mealworm powder for its snacks and drinks (PEP)

PepsiCo — the food company that makes snacks like Doritos, Cheetos, and Quaker Oats cereal — is looking for alternative protein sources for its products.  On the open innovation site NineSights, PepsiCo recently posted a request for "new and  novel protein sources for usage in their snacks and beverages."  These non-traditional proteins could include plant-based protein, mycoprotein (a protein made from mushrooms), or insect protein. Environmental objections to Duke Energy plant end as Clemson council withdraws from case

The Clemson City Council has withdrawn its regulatory challenge to Duke Energy’s contract to sell steam to Clemson University now that the university has moved the proposed power plant away from two residential neighborhoods. The South Carolina city’s action should ease the way for approving the $50.8 million combined heat-and-power (CHP) plant Duke now plans to build on university property on Kite Hill, a little more than a quarter mile from the previous site and well away from residential… ...

Impossible Foods cruelty-free burger added to more West Coast restaurant menus

Critics of vegetarian meat substitutes often say they are ‘nothing like that real thing,’ but Impossible Foods’ new lab-grown burger patty seeks to silence the complaints for good. The California-based company assembled a team of scientists to create a cruelty-free burger patty made entirely from plant-based ingredients, but unlike any veggie burger before it, the Impossible Foods burger smells, bleeds, and apparently tastes just like beef from a cow. After wildly satisfying diners in taste tes...

The plant-based burger that tastes like real meat is coming to the West Coast

The bloody, plant-based burger developed by startup Impossible Foods has been backed by Bill Gates and served by David Chang of the Momofuku empire in New York City. Now, the burger that looks like meat, smells like meat, but isn't really meat, is coming to the West Coast. Up until now, the burger has only been available at Chang's Nishi restaurant in New York City. On Wednesday, Impossible Foods announced it's teaming up with three award-winning restaurants in California that will begin s...

General Mills Follows Four Trends on Path to Brand Growth

As one of America’s processed-food giants in an era when the zeitgeist has turned against it, General Mills continues to struggle. Despite having overhauled its brand and product lineup over the past several years, introducing whole grain cereals and purchasing independent and organic brands, the company still expects net sales for fiscal 2017 to decline by 2 percent, or, at best to remain flat with fiscal 2016. The story is very similar at rival Kellogg and at other struggling CPG giants that ...

Vegan Dairy Roundup

"I could be vegetarian, but I could never be vegan because I love dairy so much!" I've heard this exact phrase time and time again. And while I'm no saint when it comes to avoiding dairy addiction, I have to say there are some pretty wonderful substitutions, or really replacements, for the basics. Below is my roundup for what I think are the best vegan dairy replacements. Kite Hill Yogurt I've always loved yogurt. I find it filling, satisfying, and healthy. But the non-dairy yogurt options unti...

Weekend in Detroit

I’ve needed to get out of town. Somewhere new(ish). Somewhere interesting. But still something close enough to drive to on the weekend. So we decided to visit Detroit last weekend. When we left Toronto it was windy and rainy, as we continued on the highway it got worse and worse. Visibility was low, you could see large commercial trucks weave into adjoining lanes with nearly every gust of strong winds. It was no joke. When we pulled into the Ingersoll En Route, it seemed like our trip was over. ...
