Koch Industries closes nearly $13B Infor acquisition

Koch Industries announced today that it has closed on the acquisition of Infor, announced in February. The company never officially announced the purchase price, but sources indicated that it was close to $13 billion, putting it in line to be one of the top 10 enterprise acquisitions this year. The company will remain an independent subsidiary of Koch, which tends to deal more in manufacturing than software. The goal is to use the resources of Koch to continue to build out the Infor product fami...

Video calls replace hugs for elderly in senior care amid coronavirus outbreak

Three times a day for more than four years, 88-year-old Jeanne Wintheiser would amble from her one-bedroom apartment at the Town & Country senior community through a labyrinth of hallways and corridors to reach the room of her husband, an Alzheimer’s patient at the other end of the sprawling Santa Ana facility. There, she would often feed Bob Wintheiser, 89, his favorite meal — hamburgers — and together during baseball season they would watch their beloved Los Angeles Angels on television. About...

How Are Bookstores Surviving, If They Are At All?

Here’s what’s going on with some bookstores in Los Angeles. The Ripped Bodice in Culver City, which has a big Twitter following, offered a “care package” deal. Co-owner Leah Koch: “‘Those have been so popular. We put them up before we closed to foot traffic. Within 48 hours, we had 230 orders,’ Koch says, adding that the store now has a waitlist for the care package service and, as of this writing, there were 700 people on the waitlist.” Other bookstores? It’s not great news. – The Hollywood R...

POTD: Heckler & Koch G95K with HK269 Grenade Launcher

Photo Of The Day – This is a rare sight captured by Jan-Phillipp Weisswange. You’re looking at the G95K (which is an HK416 A7 “Short” 14.4″ barrel) with an HK269 Grenade Launcher. This is, so far, the only picture I’ve seen of the two systems combined. As a bonus, it has the green/brown colour scheme, the […] Read More … The post POTD: Heckler & Koch G95K with HK269 Grenade Launcher appeared first on The Firearm Blog.

Time for Mike to get it done

American politics is pervasively distorted, not just by money, but by right wing money.  Charles Koch is a dangerous crank but a superb political organizer, and he is primarily responsible for some of the most malign aspects of contemporary American politics, notably the staggering federal deficit and the insistence on climate change denial.  There is no comparable political force on the left.  That’s why Michael Bloomberg offered such promise.  It’s not pleasant for American politics thus to ...

How Bernie Sanders Lost the White Working Class

Bernie Sanders’s 16-point loss to Joe Biden in the Michigan primary came almost four years to the day after Sanders’s stunning upset of Hillary Clinton in Michigan on March 8, 2016, which became the most important moment of Sanders’s 2016 campaign. Michigan was the first really large state to Feel the Bern. Hillary’s weakness with white working-class voters in Michigan, which took pollsters by complete surprise, would take them by complete surprise again on Election Day in November.White working...

Why pioneering astronaut Christina Koch hopes her records are broken one day

Coronavirus kitchen: What to stock, cook if you face a 14-day quarantine

As the novel coronavirus continues to spread in California and residents consider the possibility of self-quarantine, one can’t help but wonder: Am I really going to eat all the protein bars I hoarded at Costco? Not if you’re stuck at home for two weeks, potentially unwell or taking care of someone who is unwell. You did the right thing by stocking up on toilet paper, hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes. But, remember: This isn’t an earthquake stash. Should there be a quarantine — government o...

Grenell’s Past Foreign Clients Make Him Unprecedented Choice To Lead Intel Community

Acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell is many things: ambassador to Germany, right-wing provocateur, and Instagram aficionado. But what may present the biggest problem is his past as a media consultant for foreign political parties, governments, and businesses – and whether that work strayed into being a foreign agent and would have complicated his ability to receive a security clearance. Former national security officials told TPM that Grenell crossed what has traditionall...

Trump Re-Election Year CPAC Is A Fever Swamp-Filled, Star-Studded Coup-A-Palooza!

The conservative movement fully belongs to President Donald Trump, and nowhere is that more evident than the absolutely bonkers agenda for CPAC — the Conservative Political Action Conference. The annual affair for Washington’s elite now also represents the choleric mud puddle at the heart of the right-wing fever swamp. And the theme of this year’s tribute to the President is clear: The libs staged a “coup” by investigating Our President! We need a do-over term in 2021! Everywhere one turns in...

FC Cincinnati coach Jans steps away from club after allegedly using racial slur

FC Cincinnati coach Ron Jans has stepped away from the team as the league investigates the alleged use of a racial slur in the team's locker room. Jans was officially hired by the club in August, replacing former Alan Koch as head coach of the then-first-year team. The former PEC Zwolle, Heerenveen and Groningen boss was brought in as a "short-term solution" following Koch's departure, with his contract set to run through the end of the 2020 season.

Dog Could Not Possibly Be Happier About This Astronaut’s Return to Earth After a Year in Space

There’s nothing better than coming home to a pet who’s overjoyed to see you after a long, hard day at work. Except maybe coming home to them after a long, hard year in space. After spending a record-breaking 328 days in space, the longest single spaceflight by a woman, NASA astronaut Christina Koch officially returned to Earth on Feb. 6. And on Thursday, she took to Twitter to share a video of the joyous moment that she was reunited with her dog, LBD, who had clearly been eagerly awaiting h...

Free Software is Being Abandoned by Opponents of Software Patents and It's Being Attacked by Patent Trolls

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is rotting away as an advocate against software patents; Patents on algorithms are still being granted (even when courts repeatedly reject these) and Red Hat’s Chief Patent Counsel remains Manny Schecter, one of the loudest proponents of such patents (citing the likes of Adam Mossoff this week, in effect Koch operatives); this is a very big problem because Free software projects come under a barrage of lawsuits, using patents like those IBM lobbies feroci...

The first thing she did was relish the special aspects of home, like reuniting with her dog, eating her favorite foods and taking a family trip to the beach, Koch said during a press conference Wednesday.
