Billingham Bags

I know, I know, what David Paterson said...in the last Featured Comment on the previous post...but I can't help one more comment about bags. And that is to point out that any time you get a lot of use out of something, you win. I circle back around to writing about Billingham (here's their website, which has the least informative "About Us" page I've ever encountered) every few years. I put Billingham in the "High-Status Luxury Veblen-Good brands" category in my Guide to Bag Brands. However, Tre...

Drum Scanned – A Review of 35mm Kodak E100

To those who follow my work closely, you may know that I consider myself a large format photographer. I will photograph with a medium format camera, particularly when I’m trying to save weight on a backpacking trip or save time when I’m teaching a photography workshop, but 35mm has been somewhat shunned in my arsenal, […] The post Drum Scanned – A Review of 35mm Kodak E100 appeared first on DIY Photography.

Polaroid Flashback? Meet the Kodak SMILE Printer

It’s been a long while since the days of Polaroid and instafilm’s dominance over an industry since turned to the much-quicker method of smartphones with cameras. But that doesn’t mean that makers aren’t still giving the instant film market a shot, Kodak being among them. Image via Kodak. Revealed at CES 2019, the SMILE printer from Kodak uses some pretty cool tech underpinning it. A printer that uses “zero ink” technology, the Kodak SMILE joins products from others such as Canon and the aforem...

Dead Or Alive? Bringing Brands Back To Life

We can all remember brands we loved (or not) that have disappeared. Frequently they are household name brands to which we became emotionally attached—brands to which we were loyal and for which we still have positive associations, brands we trusted. Most importantly, these brands often retain significant equity. Equity that is difficult to measure and value. Under the right circumstances, licensing can resurrect these brands. With a well-conceived strategy, licensing can capitalize on their h...

Why Kodak willingly ignored photography’s digital future

Kodak’s been struggling to regain its place in the world of photography ever since it filed for bankruptcy protection in 2012. At the time they said that “Since 2008, despite Kodak’s best efforts, restructuring costs and recessionary forces have continued to negatively impact the company’s liquidity position”. Basically, they’re not making enough money. But why? […] The post Why Kodak willingly ignored photography’s digital future appeared first on DIY Photography.

Go With Your Gifts

I've been having a conversation in the comments (noteworthy in itself as I usually don't even allow conversations in the comments—as I sometimes say, this isn't a forum) with a reader who, despite being of older age, is willing to remain flexible, change with the times, and reinvent himself if need be. That's admirable and I don't want to pretend otherwise. But he's insisting that I, too, should change with the times and become a vlogger (video blogger). Like Scotty Kilmer, for example. Another ...

Deaths in the Family

...If you accept, as I do, the notion that the far-flung society of Photo-Dawgs (those who love photography and are devoted to it) comprises a sprawling extended family. Evelyn and Jim Hughes, 1982. Photo by Bill Jay. I'm extremely sorry to report that our friend Jim Hughes died on the afternoon of the Tuesday before Christmas. Jim was the editor of the original Camera Arts magazine, the best photography magazine I'm familiar with, and he was the biographer of W. Eugene Smith. But those two tw...

6 Reasons Why Film Photography Is On The Rise Again

When digital photography burst on the scene, it didn’t take very long for it to usurp the analog establishment. And, as is the tendency with technology, advancements in digital photography have moved forward at a blinding clip. The fact that we can even have a debate about whether DSLRs are head toward obsolescence bears this point out. We’ve got cameras that shoot 4K video and can produce usable images at an ISO of 102,400. We’ve got 100-megapixel sensors and 5-axis sensor stabilization. ...
