Bakelalan Bird Watching Trip Report

One of the few places that has been getting some bird watching attention is no other than the highland village of Bakelalan in Sarawak, Borneo. For the serious bird watchers, this is my Bakelalan bird watching trip report, done in November 2018.  First of all, Bakelalan or Ba'Kelalan is a Lun Bawang tribe village, located in the northeast highlands of Sarawak, Malaysia. It is also in the district of Lawas, which can be easily accessed from Kota Kinabalu in Sabah or Miri in Sarawak. Ge...

KY eats – Mdm Ing Fish Noodle, Kota Kinabalu

Kota Kinabalu has always been known for their seafood, undoubtedly due to its location as well as the local’s preference in how they get their protein. Since I’m a fan of fish noodle in general, I do make it a mission to try the various offerings they have on this North Borneo town. One of the latest places I got a chance to check out was Mdm Ing Fish Noodle at Jalan Penampang. Madam Ing fish noodle, Kota Kinabalu The restaurant is located about 15 minutes away from town by car, so you would de...

KY eats – Garupa Fish Meehun at TaukeFish Recipe, Kota Kinabalu

On my last trip to Sabah for work, Ben, as usual, brought me to one of those special food places where tourist business isn’t one of their aims. The place is called Taukefish Recipe, a restaurant with a rather peculiar set up that you’d think it is some sort of a joke. Tauke Fish at Kota Kinabalu The restaurant is converted from a house located at the deep end of a small kampung a stone’s throw away from the airport. While they have put up signboards leading to the eatery, they are about as tin...

KY eats – Welcome Seafood, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

The one food that you absolutely must try when in Sabah is of course, their seafood. Situated by South China Sea, Kota Kinabalu is blessed with some of the best the ocean has to offer. And when it comes to KK seafood, the locals definitely have their own list of restaurants they prefer – Welcome Seafood at Penampang is one of those places. Welcome Seafood, at Penampang, Sabah The restaurant is situated some 10 KM away from the city at this place called Fu Guan Industrial Centre. Parking can be ...

I'm not traveling, but living abroad

Photo: Angelin Song I have lived in seven countries. Crazy and stupid as it sounds, that’s really what I’ve been doing in the past eight years. I grew up around Los Angeles, California. It’s a wonderful city with endless art events, new bars and coffee shops, tons of hiking trails, and live music. However, I still felt like it wasn’t enough for me. I still felt like I was doing the exact same thing over and over again; I needed some new scenery. What I didn’t know was that I needed to be chal...

A Day with Orang Utans and Sunbears in Malaysian Borneo

On the northeast coast of Borneo lies Sandakan. The gateway to visiting some of Asia’s cutest but most endangered animals. The vivid orange-furred Orangutans and long-nosed Proboscis Monkeys – icons of Malaysia – Bornean Pygmy elephant and the lesser known Bornean Sun Bears all call this Malaysian State home. They each call Sabah home. But as the dense rainforest that covers the land recedes so too does the population of these, and many other, animals. When people say ‘Borneo’ I immediately asso...

KY eats – D’Place Kepayan Perdana, Traditional Kadazan Cuisine at Kota Kinabalu

On our Mt. Kinabalu Hiking trip, we took the opportunity to dine at perhaps the most popular Kadazan restaurant in town on the last day of our visit. The reason is simple, D’Place is located at Kepayan Perdana, which is just a few minutes away from KK International Airport, most strategic place for dinner prior to flying back since KK traffic can get quite horrific and requires a bit of management at times. D’Place Kinabalu, a short drive from KK Air Port The restaurant itself is easy to miss i...
