Persian book festival coming to Irvine

When Bahareh Hedayat wanted to find immersion classes in Persian language and culture for her young children, she couldn’t find any close to home. So the Irvine resident created her own language immersion and cultural center. The non-profit, Bahar Kids, now is gearing to host its second annual Persian Children’s Book Festival on Feb. 24. Santa Clarita Valley breaks ground on a new, larger LA County Sheriff’s station

A wooden sign stood firmly on a dirt hill on Golden Valley Road. Behind it stood law enforcement vehicles, horses, and even a helicopter. They were there to break ground on a new, larger Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s station, expected in 2020. “I know we all agreed here that the station was outgrown many years ago,” said Santa Clarita Mayor Laurene Weste. “So the city of Santa Clarita and Los Angeles County Fifth District have worked together on a plan for financing and constructing a new large...

Summer’s first heat wave descends on Southern California

Click for a larger image. LOS ANGELES — The first heat wave of the summer is hitting the Southland Thursday, sending temperatures into triple-digit territory and creating an elevated danger of wildfire and heat-related illnesses amid high temperatures, strong winds, low humidity and an abundance of very dry vegetation, forecasters said. Temperatures will be around 10 degrees above normal Thursday and between 15 and 25 degrees higher than the average on Friday, said National Weather Service met...

LA County Sheriff watchdog panel needs more teeth, group says. But the sheriff says not so fast

A broad coalition of activists is spearheading an effort to give a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department watchdog more teeth while paving the way to reduce the county’s jail population. But they are up against the sheriff and a union who say the effort would lead to costly battles over deputies’ personnel records and change the function of the civilian panel. Reform L.A. Jails, a coalition that includes public safety and criminal justice reform leaders, among others, aims to gather enough sign...

How warm will Southern California get today, and how long will trend last?

LOS ANGELES — A warming trend got underway today in the Southland, where temperatures are expected to rise by several degrees. The higher temperatures are the result of warm gusty winds, which will sweep the region through this morning, and a ridge of high pressure from the Pacific, which will shift to the east later this week, said National Weather Service meteorologist Kathy Hoxsie. Burbank, which experienced a seasonal high of 70 degrees Monday, is expected to have a high of 74 today, rising ...

2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty King Ranch Long-Term Update 3: Size Matters, Part 1

This update is concerned with what life is like here in the City of Angeles with a truck that’s (probably) the size of Rhode Island. You can argue that heavy-duty trucks weren’t designed with Los Angeles in mind. However—and believe me, I’ve been looking—there are throngs of them to be found in the nation’s second-largest city. Remember, there are 23 states here in America with smaller populations than L.A. (4,041,707 denizens in 2017). If we’re talking counties, Los Angeles County (10 million f...

The Time for Action On the Homeless Crisis Is Now

Los Angeles County has reached a critical moment when political will, public support and resources are all within reach to finally put an end to the spiraling epidemic of mass homelessness. Just a couple months after the Board of Supervisors approved a historic and comprehensive plan to address the crisis, a new L.A.County sponsored poll shows that voters would overwhelmingly approve a ballot initiative this fall to combat homelessness -- even if it means taking money out of their own pockets to...
