LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — It hasn’t been a streak of accuracy on a level with Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees or Tom Brady. One woman's knee replacement surgery highlights its risks and limitations

When a doctor said that knee replacement would reduce her arthritis pain by 75 percent, Lake was overjoyed. “I thought the knee replacement was going to be a cure,” said Lake, now 52 and living in rural Iowa. Most knee replacements are considered successful, and the procedure is known for being safe and cost-effective. Rates of the surgery doubled from 1999 to 2008, with 3.5 million procedures a year expected by 2030.

Up to a third of knee replacements pack pain and regret

Danette Lake thought surgery would relieve the pain in her knees. The arthritis pain began as a dull ache in her early 40s, brought on largely by the pressure of unwanted weight. Lake managed to lose 200 pounds through dieting and exercise, but the pain in her knees persisted.

Bears looking to tune up while dancing into playoffs

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — No one can accuse quarterback Mitchell Trubisky and the Chicago Bears of forgetting to stop and smell the roses during their run to a 10-4 record. Or it might be more appropriate to say they’ve danced their way to the NFC North title. With road games Sunday against San Francisco […]

Alien Landscapes: Places on Earth You Should Totally See

Planet Earth has more than its share of magnificent spectacles, many of which tourists queue to see. Earthly wonders like the Niagara Falls and spectacular man-made miracles such as Egypt’s pyramids are fascinating for sure, but they keep our feet and imaginations planted firmly on the familiar ground. Postcards, textbooks, and holiday brochures make us feel we’ve seen these sights before even when we haven’t. But we needn’t venture too far off the beaten track to encounter some truly alien land...

50 Under 50 - Part VI: Success!

I started my resolution to watch 50 movies made before 1950 in 2018 in March. While I'd already watched a couple of qualifying movies, I was still several movies behind for a good portion of the year. For progress so far: [Part I | Part II | Part III | Part IV | Part V] After a strong showing during the Six Weeks of Halloween horror movie marathon, I had made up that shortfall and then some. This past week, I officially hit 50 films made before 1950. I will definitely see a few more before year'...

The 20 Best Americana Albums of 2018

None Americana is a peculiar label, isn't it? Whenever we attempt to identify the most authentically American musical form, the one that most accurately captures the history and culture of the United States, we end up debating all night, just as we do every year here in the PopMatters offices and recreation areas when it's time to write our year-end Americana list. What we can all agree on is that Americana music ought to be music that incorporates some traditional elements of any number of Ame...

This is what 'going viral' looks like

Sometimes I blog about something and it goes nowhere, much like this girl's domino: Sometimes I blog about something and it continues to weave its way to the many corners of the internet, much like this: But, sometimes I blog about something and it starts a chain reaction that looks more like this (I looked for a domino video that featured fireworks and confetti but came up short): via In other words, it goes viral. Now, on November 11, I blogged about Tim Klein's "puzzle montages" and I beli...

For Jimmy Lake and the Huskies’ defense, the script remained the same against WSU’s Air Raid offense

UW's biggest defensive adjustments in the Apple Cup? "The biggest thing we had to adjust was making sure our cleats were clean to make sure the snow and the ice weren’t building up on the bottom," Lake said.

The crash occurred at 1:55 a.m., causing no apparent damage to the track’s overhead lines, according to Metro spokesman Brian Haas. “While the semi did not damage the tracks or overhead power equipment, it did destroy a signal case, which helps regulate the speed and spacing of the trains,” Haas said. UCLA safety Quentin Lake hopes to win Mater Dei reunion vs. USC

LOS ANGELES — Quentin Lake is gracious enough to admit that he didn’t win every rep against Amon-Ra St. Brown in high school. But when the UCLA safety meets his former Mater Dei teammate at the Rose Bowl on Saturday, Lake hopes he comes out with a distinct advantage. “Coming into this game I’m really going to try to lock him down,” Lake said Monday with a smile. Lake is one of only two Mater Dei alumni on UCLA’s roster, joining offensive lineman Christaphany Murray. They’ll match up against USC’...

October Gold Rush

In case you were unaware, the past few years Mile Lacs has been closed to walleye fishing in October. I respected the DNR's wishes on the matter and didn't fish for them even though I wanted too.  This year thanks to the increasing health of the fishery the walleye fishing is open to catch and release fishing from 6AM to 10PM.  I took full advantage of that in October because the bite has been consistent and rather good. I fished the Lake for 17 days over 20 trips and only got skunked twice.  I...

About last night: A review of UCLA’s 41-10 loss to Utah

Road teams typically struggle in Friday night Pac-12 games. Utah bucked the trend easily. The Utes dominated UCLA 41-10 at the Rose Bowl on Friday and slapped UCLA with its worst home loss in eight years. The Bruins, who had a chance to momentarily rise to the top of the Pac-12 South standings, are now left lamenting the same old problems that haunted them in years past like missed tackles, penalties and drops. Links to wrap up the game It just didn’t feel like the Bruins’ night, Wilton Speig...

UCLA, after 0-5 start, in thick of Pac-12 race vs. Utah

LOS ANGELES — There were internet rumblings about a winless season and Twitter drama with parents. The offense was anemic and the defense was overworked. Chip Kelly’s UCLA tenure was making headlines for all the wrong reasons as the Bruins got off to the worst start in school history since 1943. Well, some things change. Two wins later, the Bruins, despite the outside hand-wringing surrounding the team’s 0-5 start, are just a half-game out of first place in the Pac-12 South. A win against No. 23...

One Year Ago Today: Some Talus Up Close, a Lake in the Humboldt Sink, and Bonus Fall Colors

It was a fall day, and while driving out to my field site near Winnemucca I stopped for a hike. I got up high enough to see the water in the Humboldt Sink quite clearly (although way off in the distance), and I clambered over piles of talus. The tallish cheatgrass and possibly an ephedra bush are showing their fall colors, though the cheatgrass takes on this straw yellow color by mid June, and keeps showing it until it regenerates itself from seed sometime in the spring. And here I am, on top ...
