ConocoPhillips will not chase expensive Permian deals, CEO says

ConocoPhillips Chief Executive Officer Ryan Lance on Tuesday repeated a pledge to restrain spending, saying the U.S. oil producer would not be drawn into pricey mergers and acquisitions. ConocoPhillips plans to keep its capital spending at around $6 billion this year, Lance told shareholders at the company's annual meeting. ConocoPhillips has won billions of dollars in arbitration awards over the expropriation of its assets in Venezuela and posted a first-quarter profit that topped estimates.

‘Long Shot’ Star O’Shea Jackson Jr. on Sharing the Screen With Seth Rogen and Godzilla [Interview]

O’Shea Jackson Jr. may not be guaranteed a long and successful career as a film actor, but there is certainly no shortage of motivating and inspiring factors in his life to get him there. Although he’s been acting for less than five years, he’s had a succession of fascinating roles in a short time, beginning with playing his father, the rapper Ice Cube , in the 2015 N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton . After key supporting parts in the dark comedy Ingrid Goes West (opposite Aubrey Plaza ...

Problems with a point- NOT a plug, just some thoughts on books and book writing

Problems with a Point: Exploring Math and Computer Science by Gasarch and Kruskal, available on amazon here, came out a while back  and I plugged it in my  blog post here. Regan-Lipton reviewed it here. This post is NOT a plug, its random points about the book and book writing 1) On Feb 28 I checked my Amazon ranking twice. At noon it was at 400,000 and at 4:00PM it was at  roughly 80,000.  Either (a) someone bought a copy, or (b) the number of sales of such books is so small that amazon does ra...

An Interdisciplinary approach to P vs NP

I have a grant with some brain scientists on the following exciting approach to P vs NP. We want to prove:                                There is no algorithm for SAT in P This seems hard.  So lets scale down our goals to:                               Lance cannot find an algorithm for SAT in P You can replace Lance with someone else, but Lance has volunteered to have brain scans done. The idea is to scan the P vs NP part of his brain and see what we can discern. I know what you are thinking. ...

He Created *NSYNC & Backstreet Boys — He Was Also The Ultimate Con Artist

There’s a moment in the Lance Bass–produced documentary about boy-band puppeteer and notorious conman Lou Pearlman that’s more heartbreaking than any one of the forlorn love songs *NSYNC or the Backstreet Boys (Pearlman’s biggest conquests) ever recorded. It’s the scene in The Boy Band Con: The Lou Pearlman Story when the five members of *NSYNC recount the time when, three years into their stadium-touring, million-of-records-sold, screaming-teen-inducing careers, they are finally presented with...

Keith Rosson's Playlist for His Novel "Smoke City"

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Previous contributors include Jesmyn Ward, Lauren Groff, Bret Easton Ellis, Celeste Ng, T.C. Boyle, Dana Spiotta, Amy Bloom, Aimee Bender, Heidi Julavits, Hari Kunzru, and many others. Keith Rosson's Smoke City is a surreal, genre-defying whirlwind of a road trip novel. Foreword Reviews wrote of the book: "A brilliantly haunting tale of forgiveness and redemptio...

Director Alex Gibney looks back on a career of profiling liars and shady characters, from Elizabeth Holmes to Lance Armstrong, and crowns the most despicable

For close to 40 years, Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney has made movies about some of the most complex and controversial figures of the last century. He’s examined the maddening drive of Steve Jobs (“Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine”), the bald-faced lies of people like Lance Armstrong (“The Armstrong Lie”) and Julian Assange (“We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks”), and even the mind games done by the head of Scientology, David Miscavige (“Going Clear: Scientology & the Pr...

Third Poll on P vs NP and related Questions is out now! And the winner is Harambe!

I took a poll of the theory community (and others) about P vs NP and related issues in 2002, 2012, and 2019 (sorry its not an arithmetic  sequence --- read the third poll article to see why). The 2002 and 2012 polls are on the web (see here and here ), and now the third poll is out and its here or here . All three appear in Lane's Complexity Column in SIGACT News. I'll give some highlights and thought about the third poll, but for more read the article. Or read all three and see how opinions h...

Proposed Experiment - % of BF Rise

Proposed Experiment - % of BF Rise Submitted by DanAyo on March 3, 2019 - 8:30am. Albacore, aka Lance came up with an experiment (A Tale of two Bulk Times) to determine the affects of the percentage of rise during bulk fermentation. His quest is a subject of interest to many bakers, IMO.What is the very best percentage of bulk fermentation rise for a straight sourdough? It seems plausible that various doughs of different make up could require different amounts of rise. But initially,...

Problems with a Point: Exploring Math and Computer Science

As you can see from Lance's tweet                Problems with a Point: Exploring Math and Computer Science                by Gasarch and Kruskal (ADDED LATER- the World scientific website has more info than amazon and has a table of contents, so here it is: here) is now available! The tweet says its $68.00 but that's hardcover- paperback is $38.00 (are covers that expensive) and if you like your books already broken in, there are some used copies for $89.00. Makes sense to me (no it doesn't!)....

Building a Street Bob custom using Harley’s rulebook

More Harley-Davidsons go under the grinder than any other make of bike. But surprisingly, The Motor Co. seldom commissions customs from big-name builders. Instead, it has developed the annual Battle of the Kings contest—where dealers customize a bike within a very strict rule set. To get a taste of how hard that is, we flew to Milwaukee for the second Harley-sponsored ‘Brewtown Throwdown’ event. The Brewtown Throwdown is a build-off between teams, made up of people from different walks of ...

Clippers are at a size disadvantage without Danilo Gallinari in the lineup

LOS ANGELES — Life without Danilo Gallinari is requiring the Clippers to think small. Counting the Jan. 18 game against Golden State, when Gallinari was removed early because of the back spasms that have sidelined him for the seven games since, the Clippers are 4-4 without the 6-foot-10 forward. He is improving, Coach Doc Rivers said, and is expected to join the Clippers at an as-yet-undetermined date during their six-game, 11-day trip, which begins Saturday in Detroit. The Clippers obviously ar...

"I used to love to watch her dance the Grizzly Bear/I guess she's gone to Frisco, to dance it there..."

There really is a dance called the Grizzly Bear, which I didn't know until yesterday, though I've heard the lyric quoted in the post title hundreds of times. "Grizzly Bear" by The Youngbloods was in the stack of singles next to my record player in the 1960s. I happened to play this video of it:Before they play the song, Dick Clark interviews Jesse Colin Young about it, and he says: "I'm a ragtime freak, and... this is about a dance in the 1890s called the Grizzly Bear where people used to hug ea...

do we ever only care about the decision problem? I know of only one case of that

(I had been thinking of this for a post then Lance's post on search versus decision inspired me to write up these thoughts.) When teaching NP-completeness we often say The problem we really care about is, for example, given a weighted graph and two vertices s and t, find the optimal way to go from s to t while hitting every node. But its cleaner mathematically to look at the decision problem: { (G,s,t,C) : there is a Ham Path from s to t that costs \le C } The search and decision are poly time...

The justices return, without Ginsburg or any new grants (Updated)

[Editor’s Note: This post was updated to cover the four cases in which the Supreme Court asked the U.S. solicitor general to file briefs.] The justices returned to the bench today for the first arguments of the new year. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who had surgery on December 21 to remove two cancerous growths from her lungs, was not on the bench this morning; a court spokeswoman indicated that she would still participate in today’s cases based on the briefs and transcripts.
