Frogs Without Legs Regrow Leglike Limbs In New Experiment

An anonymous reader quotes a report from The New York Times: African clawed frogs are masters of putting themselves back together, handily regenerating lost tails and hind limbs, when they are tadpoles. But these powers dim with maturity. Wait for an adult frog to regrow a lopped-off limb and you'll see only a tapered spike, more like a talon than a leg. Now, a group of scientists have found a way to harness the adult frog's own cells to regrow an imperfect but functional limb. The researchers p...

Trip to Switzerland: Lausanne

Part of my stay at the Beau Rivage Palace included a tour of the old part of Lausanne. We wandered through the quiet, hilly streets of the Old Town with homes and buildings dating back to the 1300s and 1400s, many with quaint window boxes still filled with flowers in bloom. The incredible Gothic architecture of Lausanne Cathedral was most impressive, with a grand organ with 7,000 pipes, which took 150,000 hours to build. We had coffee and a sweet at a local bakery café and did my last rounds ...

Trip To Switzerland: Beau Rivage Palace Lausanne

Last December I wrote about a trip I took to Switzerland and my stay in Zurich. After Zurich I spent two days in Lausanne, and I had the very special privilege of staying at the Beau Rivage Palace.  The special experience started at the Lausanne train station when I was met on the platform by a well-dressed man in a suit and tie who escorted me in his very luxurious Mercedes Benz to the hotel. He gave me a min-tour of the hilly city before we arrived.  The façade of the Art Nouveau hote...

Trip to Switzerland– Zurich

At the end of October, I made a special five-day trip to Switzerland. The first two and half days I spent in Zurich, which was sponsored by the Zurich Tourism Office.  I had visited Zurich once before about 10 years ago just for an afternoon and honestly, I wasn’t very impressed. The city was nice enough and very clean, but it seemed dull except for the beauty of the lake. After my trip last month, I was beyond impressed and now Zurich has made it into my favorite list of European cities. ...

Twitter Algorithm Prefers Slimmer, Younger, Light-Skinned Faces

An anonymous reader quotes a report from the BBC: A Twitter image-cropping algorithm prefers to show faces that are slimmer, younger and with lighter skin, a researcher has found. Bogdan Kulynyc won $3,500 in a Twitter-organized contest to find biases in its cropping algorithm. Earlier this year, Twitter's own research found the algorithm had a bias towards cropping out black faces. The "saliency algorithm" decided how images would be cropped in Twitter previews, before being clicked on to open ...
