I drove a $42,000 VW Golf R to see if the 'performance hatch' is worth the price — here's the verdict

The VW Golf R is a performance hatchback that adds premium touches and tech to the VW Golf GTI. The Golf R is a bit expensive, but it's a versatile vehicle that's bliss to drive. The best part is that a driver can access all the power the Golf R's 288-horsepower engine puts out. This is an ideal daily commuter for a grownup who still wants to enjoy the occasional track day — or just likes to carve up winding roads. The 2018 Volkswagen Golf R might be the most fun I've had behind the wheel thu...

Weak storm hits Southern California on first day of spring

LOS ANGELES — A weak storm headed for Southern California Wednesday — the first day of spring 2019 — and was on track to arrive later than expected, and with less moisture. The storm originating in the southern gulf of Alaska should have reached Southern California Tuesday night, according to what forecasters had projected, but as of early Wednesday morning it remained parked off Northern California, said National Weather Service meteorologist Dave Bruno. “You’ll need an umbrella at some point (...

A monorail down the 405? Sherman Oaks residents submit their own Sepulveda Pass plan to little avail

President’s Day weekend was all it took for a Sherman Oaks engineer and architect duo to draft a mass transit concept from Van Nuys to LAX that they think gives Metro’s own proposals a run for their money. The big idea? A monorail running above the 405 freeway median — straight down the middle — that could be cheaper and easier to build while minimizing impacts on neighborhood streets from the South San Fernando Valley to the Westside. After Metro revealed its updated Sepulveda Transit Corridor ...

Two men who were arrested in Encino last week on suspicion of trying to steal thousands of dollars of cash out of a bank customer’s cars were part of an expansive ring of thieves operating across dozens of states, police said Wednesday. The ring, whose members mostly operated out of the Houston area but recently set up in Los Angeles, targeted “dozens and dozens” of victims leaving banks across all of Southern California over the last six months, according to a detective with the Los Angeles Pol...

Nearly 700 Los Angeles International Airport catering workers who voted last month to authorize a strike in the face of failed labor negotiations have forged a new agreement with employer Flying Food Group. In a vote taken late Monday, 98 percent of the unionized employees represented by Unite Here Local 11 opted to ratify the new contract which runs through June 30, 2022. Southern California supercommuters could fly to work (by plane)

Rather than stew in traffic, long-distance commuters may soon have a way to rise above it — by 3,500 feet. A venture by two entrepreneurs would allow well-heeled workers to leapfrog over ground traffic by flying from La Verne to Santa Monica, and perhaps other airports. The planes would carry up to 10 people, a sort of vanpool in the sky. Rather than stew in traffic, long-distance commuters may soon have a way to rise above it — by 3,500 feet. From Disneyland to China, the monorail is riding a new high. But would it work in LA?

In 1959, Walt Disney watched his monorail encircle Disneyland in Anaheim, a train from the next century bringing park guests, appropriately enough, into Tomorrowland. Disney figured transportation planners would take his monorail concept — a sleek, elevated, electric-powered train straddling a single beam — and replicate it inside real cities. “He wanted to build a whole city with monorails and people-movers,” said David Koenig, author of several books on Disney’s legacy. “He was convinced every...
