Lakers could lean more on Dion Waiters while hoping Rondo returns for playoff run

ORLANDO, Fla. >> For now, Playoff Rondo is on hiatus. A right thumb fracture will shelve Rajon Rondo for six-to-eight weeks, a blow to the team’s depth that Frank Vogel acknowledged Monday was “a huge loss.” He’s scheduled to leave the NBA’s restart to have surgery this week and begin his rehabilitation outside of the bubble. But Vogel doesn’t think that means Playoff Rondo — the 34-year-old’s world-beating, stat-stuffing alter ego which has cropped up in postseasons past — is done for good this...

Silicon Valley VCs like Andreessen Horowitz and Greylock are making a $113 million bet that Caffeine's 'battle rap' events will change the way livestreams make money

Caffeine, a Redwood City-based social broadcasting startup that has partnered with Drake and the Ultimate Rap League (URL), raised $113 million in Series D funding earlier this month. The ad-free livestreaming platform hosts free events that are attended by tens of thousands of viewers, who are encouraged to make comments in real time and purchase virtual props, like popcorn, and the profits are split between Caffeine and the livestreamer.  VCs at Andreessen Horowitz think that Caffeine can ta...

Bubble Dribble: What it’s like at Disney for the NBA Restart

Editor’s note: This is the Monday, July 13 edition of the Purple & Bold Lakers newsletter. To receive the newsletter in your inbox, sign up here.  I can’t remember the last time I felt this much anticipation for an e-mail. On Sunday night at 10:15, three people gathered outside my door, and a man dressed head-to-toe in a protective suit swabbed the insides of my nose and mouth. The swabs were placed in a tube, which were placed in a crate, which were whisked off to a private laboratory to test...

REVIEW: Papa John’s Shaq-a-Roni Pizza

In 2019, the garlic sauce-soaked pizza that defined my early 2000s video gaming marathons got a massive upgrade – Shaquille O’Neal. Shaq came into Papa John’s not only as a brand ambassador, but also a board member and part-owner of nine franchises. (LeBron James and a Blaze investment who?!) Fast forward a little over a year later and the NBA Hall of Famer gets to break the backboard of 2020 with his first signature pizza. The Shaq-a-Roni Pizza channels the energy of Shaq and promises an epi...

Shannon Sharpe: JJ Redick hit the nail on the head, racism was involved in LeBron & KD's free agency moves

LeBron James and Kevin Durant have both received plenty of criticism for their decisions in free agency. LeBron for 'The Decision' when Cleveland for Miami, and Durant when he left the Thunder for the Warriors. JJ Redick said he believes the root of most of the criticism stems from racism. New Lakers guard J.R. Smith dug out of ‘depressed state’ on pathway back to the NBA

It’s been 20 months since J.R. Smith played in an NBA game. For at least a few of those months, he shunned anything that reminded him of basketball. The 15-year veteran was all but out after agreeing to part ways with Cleveland, then later having his contract waived. He stopped playing. Then he stopped doing anything that reminded him of playing. “I went through a very depressed state for a long time,” he said. “I’m a big video gamer, I didn’t even play (NBA) 2K anymore. How the Lakers are preparing for their chemistry to be tested

In the Lakers’ locker room, he was one of the loudest voices. So it made sense that even though his team hasn’t shared a locker room in nearly four months, Jared Dudley doesn’t think his role has changed. While the coronavirus pandemic has shut down basketball and much of the world, Dudley still connected. He texted. He tweeted. He added Instagram so he could check in with teammates more: see LeBron James’ beard sprout grays around the edges; see Kyle Kuzma’s home fashion shows. He also was amon...

The NBA’s Reopening Is a Warning Sign for the U.S. Economy

(Bloomberg Opinion) -- As a fan of professional basketball and a student of economic game theory, I am becoming increasingly concerned. I fear that the NBA, in particular, may be reflecting a still-hidden trend in the broader economy: People may not actually be so keen to return to work. The NBA is planning to resume a fragment of its regular season, and then the playoffs, in a custom-tailored “bubble” in Orlando, Florida, on July 30. The games will be played only among the top teams in a single ...

Lakers assistant Lionel Hollins won’t travel to Orlando due to health concerns

As coronavirus cases have continued to rise throughout the last two weeks, the NBA has massaged the messaging behind its Disney World campus: With a controlled environment, aggressive testing and monitoring and limited personnel, the so-called bubble where the league is staging its restart could potentially be safer than the world around it. But there are some risks the NBA is less willing to take, which became clearer Friday when Yahoo Sports was first to report Lakers assistant Lionel Hollins ...
