Esports One launches its fantasy esports platform

Esports One is a startup betting that there’s a big opportunity in bringing a fantasy sports approach to the world of esports — particularly at a time when traditional pro sports are on pause. Co-founder and COO Sharon Winter told me that the company’s platform, which is leaving beta testing today, is the first “all-in-one fantasy platform” for esports. In other words, it’s not just a site where you can create a fantasy team to compete with others, but also a place where you can research players...

Hedging Ethanol Production

By Robert Boslego, Member of Lee Enterprises Consulting, Inc. Special to The Digest Ethanol accounts for around ninety-four percent of the renewable fuel market in the United States. Average daily production and consumption is over one million barrels per day. This represents more than ten percent of the U.S. gasoline market, the largest in the world. Egocentric coding of external items in the lateral entorhinal cortex

Episodic memory, the conscious recollection of past events, is typically experienced from a first-person (egocentric) perspective. The hippocampus plays an essential role in episodic memory and spatial cognition. Although the allocentric nature of hippocampal spatial coding is well understood, little is known about whether the hippocampus receives egocentric information about external items. We recorded in rats the activity of single neurons from the lateral entorhinal cortex (LEC) and medial en...

Epsin deficiency promotes lymphangiogenesis through regulation of VEGFR3 degradation in diabetes

Impaired lymphangiogenesis is a complication of chronic complex diseases, including diabetes. VEGF-C/VEGFR3 signaling promotes lymphangiogenesis, but how this pathway is affected in diabetes remains poorly understood. We previously demonstrated that loss of epsins 1 and 2 in lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) prevented VEGF-C–induced VEGFR3 from endocytosis and degradation. Here, we report that diabetes attenuated VEGF-C–induced lymphangiogenesis in corneal micropocket and Matrigel plug assays i...

1+1=3: The Digest’s 2018 Multi-Slide Guide to Biogas Production With Mixed Feedstocks

Does 1+1=3? That’s the premise of this ABLC 2018 presentation from LEC’s John Forcier which looks at the challenges and opportunities in anaerobic digesters. There’s a significant energy gain (3 to 10 times manure/sludge only) from adding appropriate feedstocks, Forcier says — and his illuminating overview of the promise and progress with advanced digester systems was a highlight at ABLC 2018, and is here below.

The LEC -- now an efficient and bright device

Researchers from Umeå University and Linköping University in Sweden have developed light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) that emit strong light at high efficiency. As such, the thin, flexible and light-weight LEC promises future and improved applications within home diagnostics, signage, illumination and healthcare. The results are published in Nature Communications.

RASA1 regulates the function of lymphatic vessel valves in mice

Capillary malformation–arteriovenous malformation (CM-AVM) is a blood and lymphatic vessel (LV) disorder that is caused by inherited inactivating mutations of the RASA1 gene, which encodes p120 RasGAP (RASA1), a negative regulator of the Ras small GTP-binding protein. How RASA1 mutations lead to the LV leakage defects that occur in CM-AVM is not understood. Here, we report that disruption of the Rasa1 gene in adult mice resulted in loss of LV endothelial cells (LECs) specifically from the leafle...

Foxc1 and Foxc2 deletion causes abnormal lymphangiogenesis and correlates with ERK hyperactivation

The lymphatic vasculature is essential for maintaining interstitial fluid homeostasis, and dysfunctional lymphangiogenesis contributes to various pathological processes, including inflammatory disease and tumor metastasis. Mutations in FOXC2 are dominantly associated with late-onset lymphedema; however, the precise role of FOXC2 and a closely related factor, FOXC1, in the lymphatic system remains largely unknown. Here we identified a molecular cascade by which FOXC1 and FOXC2 regulate ERK sign...

Giants rumours continue

Rumours of the Western Hockey League's Vancouver Giants moving to the Langley Events Centre are still circulating and even included a recent visit from Ron Toigo. The Vancouver Giants owner was seen at the LEC on March 5 during the Vancouver Stealth National Lacrosse League game on March 5. The LEC was also hosting three provincial high school basketball championships that night, which could have allowed him to see how the facility operates when hosting multiple events.

How Many "Special Access" Lines are there in America? "Zero" or 600 Million?

The FCC and the phone companies, AT&T and Verizon, have been manipulating the accounting of access lines and it is being used to create harmful public policies. This is a panoramic Google Maps shot of E79th Street in New York City that shows the majority of wired access lines are NOT being counted. (This is just a 'representation'; each line represents hundreds/thousands of lines in the neighborhood.) -- I'll get back to this in a moment. Verizon claims no one is using the networks so they s...
