Whicker: Mookie Betts tunes up the Dodgers’ machine like Joe Morgan once did for Reds

Mookie Betts rubbed his glove into Atlanta’s face three times. Since there was always a baseball inside, it hurt. He levitated twice in right field and made home runs disappear, and he charged and leaned and somehow didn’t fall while he snagged a sinking liner, and thus conned Marcell Ozuna into leaving third base early. No one can tell how many runs the Braves might have scored if Betts hadn’t turned right field into his own National League Championship Series control center. But Betts certainl...

An extra half-hour of sleep shown to improve mindfulness

A study of nurses found that an extra 29 minutes of sleep dramatically improved job-related mindfulness. Nurses that reported higher mindfulness scores were 66 percent less likely to experience symptoms of insomnia.Roughly 70 million American adults suffer from some form of sleep disorder. Health care requires extreme attention to detail. Surgeons must pay particular attention to every move. Orthopedic surgeons can easily miss revealing details on an x-ray. Perhaps no job in health care requir...

Judge to hold trial on Northam's plans to remove Lee statue

A lawsuit seeking to prevent Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam from removing an enormous statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee in Richmond is scheduled to go to trial Monday. The plaintiffs, a group of Richmond residents who live near the monument, filed suit after Northam ordered the removal of the statue in June amid the outcry and unrest caused by the death of George Floyd in police custody. The state has argued it cannot be forced in perpetuity to maintain a statue Attorney General Mark Herri...

Atlanta’-based Speedscale now has $2.2 million more to grow its API test automation business

It only took a few weeks after its Y Combinator demo day debut for the Atlanta-based API test automation company Speedscale to raise its first $2.2 million. Founded by longtime developers and Georgia Institute of Technology alumni, Ken Ahrens, Matthew LeRay and Nate Lee had known each other for roughly twenty years before making the jump to working together. A circuitous path of interconnecting programming jobs in the devops and monitoring space led the three men to realize that there w...

OPinions on the Hornady Lock-N-Load Classic Reloading Kit

Finally looking in to setting up for reloading at probably the worst time. I feel I need the equipment and experience though. I am looking at the Hornady Lock-N-Load Classic Reloading Kit since I have a significant amount of credit at a place that carries it. It is the only one they have in stock. They do not seem to carry the RCBS presses and the Lee has been sold out a while. Up side of this one is it has pretty much everything besides a tumbler and media to get started. ‘Days’ Review: A Slow, Wordless March Towards Loneliness [NYFF 2020]

Misery may love company, but loneliness craves it. Yearns for it. Counts down the minutes waiting for company to arrive until life is but a hollow shell, an endless repetition of mindless tasks, wasting away waiting for something that may never come. And then when that company is finally there, doesn’t know what to do it with it but shyly dance around it. Taiwanese auteur Tsai Ming-liang has long delved into the feeling of alienation, isolation, and the miracles of human connection with his fil...

Pres. Trump Intensifies Focus On Sen. Harris In Final Weeks Of Campaign

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CBS13/AP) — Grasping for a comeback, President Donald Trump and his Republican allies are intensifying their focus not on Democratic nominee Joe Biden, but on his running mate, California Sen. Kamala Harris — arguing without evidence that it’s Harris, the first Black woman on a major party ticket, who would really be in charge if Democrats win the White House. The effort is laced with sexist and racist undertones, and one that is aimed at winning back Republicans and independ...

Unmasked Mike Lee Makes Ironic Case For Government Protecting Life

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) offered an ironic remark Tuesday in the abortion rights debate that has surfaced amid Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett’s hearing, as some Democrats fear she is likely to challenge the Roe v. Wade decision. “ Life is valuable.  That is not a religious  statement,” Lee said, appearing to defend Barrett’s conservative values, adding:  “a purpose of government is to protect life.” The comments ca,e after Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) had pressed Barrett on whether or ...

Barrett Will Be Pressed On ACA, Roe, Legal Precedent During Second Day Of Hearings

WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett will face senators’ questions over her approach to health care, legal precedent and even the presidential election during a second day of confirmation hearings on track to lock in a conservative court majority for years to come. The mood is likely to shift to a more confrontational tone as Barrett, an appellate court judge with very little trial court experience, is grilled in 30-minute segments Tuesday by Democrats gravely opposed to Pre...

Barrett hearings, day one: Opening statements on health care, religion and the Supreme Court’s role

Judge Amy Coney Barrett told the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday afternoon that “courts are not designed to solve every problem or right every wrong” after a day of polarized back-and-forth in which senators quarreled over the Supreme Court’s prominent role in health care, abortion, voting rights and electoral politics. Barrett sat in silence, wearing a mask, for most of the day as all 22 members of the committee took turns giving 10-minute opening statements. It was the first of four days ...

Comment on apple sharlotka by Lee

Despite having high hopes, this was not to my taste. I usually adore baked goods that are more apple than baked good, but not this one. Perhaps it was using a mix of Fuji’s and honeycrisps and galas which are sweeter and possibly juicier than Granny Smiths. I found the cake too sweet and took much much longer than 60 minutes. Onwards!

Two Dueling Realities Collide on Day One of Amy Coney Barrett Hearing

At first, the opening confirmation hearing for Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court not only sounded like the senators were in different hearing rooms—some were, in fact, due to COVID-19 concerns—but like they occupied different political universes altogether. In their opening remarks on Monday, each Democratic senator on the Senate Judiciary Committee cast the stakes of Barrett’s confirmation as nothing less than the fate of millions of Americans who could lose access to health insu...

A GOP senator said 'rank democracy' is bad for America at a time when Trump is behaving like an authoritarian

Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah. Tasos Katopodis/Getty Images GOP Sen. Mike Lee took to Twitter this week to argue that the US is "not a democracy," sparking fierce backlash.
