Here’s What George Lucas Originally Pitched for the Backstory of Anakin Skywalker

Back in July 1981, few people were privy to the idea that was starting to form in George Lucas‘ mind: an origin story for the iconic Star Wars villain Darth Vader. But at least three people learned the details at a story conference for Return of the Jedi, in which the Star Wars maestro revealed to Richard Marquand, Howard Kazanjian, and Lawrence Kasdan his vision of Anakin Skywalker’s origins. Lucas’ pitch for Anakin Skywalker’s original backstory, which is revealed in the new book The Star War...

‘Black Panther 2’ Will Start Filming in July 2021, Adds ‘Narco: Mexico’ Actor to Cast

In the wake of Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman‘s surprising and tragic death, we assumed that Marvel Studios and director Ryan Coogler would put the planned Black Panther 2 on the back burner while they grieved and figured out the best way to move forward with the sequel to the billion dollar hit. But apparently they’ve already figured things out – or at least to such a degree that a production start date has already been set. A new report says that Black Panther 2 will begin filming in Jul...

‘The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special’ Shows Us a Future Beyond ‘The Rise of Skywalker’

When it was announced that there would be a new Star Wars Holiday Special, everyone scratched their heads and said, “Well, this is sort of cool, I guess.” The original Star Wars Holiday Special, released in 1978 and aired only once because of how utterly awful it was, has lived on in bootlegs and become something of an ironic favorite. If you can sit through the two hours of it, you’ll be treated to some really cool animated Star Wars segments  and some of the most bizarre skits e...

George Lucas Says Fox Feared the Prequels Would Destroy ‘Star Wars’

The Star Wars prequels have gained a sort of infamy amongst fans of the franchise, and some fans even suggest they “destroyed” the series. Which is what 20th Century Fox executives feared would happen — though not for the reasons you may think. In Taschen’s upcoming book The Star Wars Archives: 1999-2005, it’s revealed that Fox thought George Lucas would “destroy” the franchise if he made 10-year-old Anakin Skywalker the star of the prequel films. There are a number of reasons that Star Wars...

How we made: Take My Breath Away, the Top Gun theme tune by Berlin

Giorgio Moroder: ‘The lyrics were written by a guy who came to fix my Ferrari. It won me my third Oscar’Before I was in Berlin I auditioned for the part of Princes Leia in Star Wars. I was 15 but looked 12. Harrison Ford was over 30 but looked 19 or 20. We sat in deckchairs to say our lines. George Lucas, bless him, sent me a letter thanking me and saying: “We chose Carrie Fisher, but we’d like to help you.” He introduced me to Steven Spielberg and all these guys. I was offered the part of Lucy ...

George Lucas Planned to Make Darth Maul the Star Wars Sequel Villain

George Lucas Planned to Make Darth Maul the Main Villain of Star Wars VII – IX After years of waiting, fans finally got a new trilogy of Star Wars films titled, The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, all of which were met with mixed results. Specifically because there didn’t seem to be any linear plot connecting each film into a satisfying whole, to say nothing of the trilogy’s lack of a clear-cut villain. As it turns out, George Lucas would have remedied the latter issu...

George Lucas’ ‘Star Wars’ Sequel Trilogy Would Have Brought Back Darth Maul, Leaned Heavily on Princess Leia

Before the new Star Wars trilogy came around, the prequels were the most divisive installments of the sci-fi saga. While older Star Wars fans love the original trilogy more, those who grew up with The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith hold the movies in high esteem. So there’s plenty of interest in learning anything and everything about the making of those films with the benefit of hindsight. And a new Star Wars book has finally provided that. The Star Wars Archives: ...

The Point of No Return

In Act 1 of a story with a 3-act structure, the protagonist often reaches the point of no return. Their old world crumbles, and they stumble forward into a new world, often reactively at first. There is no going back to the old world. In a novel or movie, there may be multiple progressive points of no return, each creating a deeper level of commitment and increasing the protagonist’s risk as well. Once Neo takes the red pill in The Matrix, he can’t go back to his old life. The old reality ...

Luke Skywalker Died in George Lucas’ Original Treatment For ‘Star Wars: Episode 8’

Details about George Lucas‘s original unused treatments for the Star Wars sequel trilogy have been somewhat hard to come by over the years. But thanks to a new book written by Lucasfilm’s Pablo Hidalgo, we know Lucas’ plans for the new trilogy share at least two major things in common with the versions that ultimately hit screens: Luke Skywalker died in Lucas’s treatment for Episode 8, and the idea for the character of Rey was there from the start (although she had a different name when Lucas w...

Does the Bible Pass the Bechdel Test? A Data-Driven Look at Women in the Story of Scripture

Amy offered a preliminary answer and so did some other friends, including Jessica Hooten Wilson. This in...

Frazetta's "A Princess of Mars" painting sells for $1.2 million at auction

A Princess of Mars (1970) is one of Frank Frazetta's most famous works. He painted it for the 1970 hardcover edition of Edgar Rice Burroughs' first John Carter of Mars novel. Interestingly, Frazetta feared the publisher wouldn't return the art so he painted a copy for himself. The copy is generally thought to be superior to the version he created for the book cover. It sold this week at Heritage Auctions for $1.2 million. "Frank Frazetta always felt that his art transcended genres," said Nadi...

Check out this new documentary about HALYX, the forgotten Sci-Fi Rock Band of Disneyland

I had certainly never heard of HALYX, the Star Wars-inspired rock band created by Walt Disney Records in the early 80s. And that's a shame, because this is absolutely my jam. Luckily, there's a new full-length documentary to fill in the gaps for me. Babmie Moe, a former A&R for Walt Disney Records, described the band as "if KISS played in the Star Wars cantina, that would be Halyx," in the 2006 book Mouse Tracks: The Story of Walt Disney Records: Lora's husband Tom was the keyboardist, and...

(Welcome to The Movies That Made Star Wars , a series where we explore the films and television properties that inspired George Lucas’s iconic universe. In this edition: The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. ) There’s no doubt that Ray Harryhausen’s landmark film  The 7th Voyage of Sinbad  helped to inspire the Star Wars universe in many ways . Released in 1958, the special effects in the picture were unlike anything that had ever been seen. Of particular note for Star Wars was the level o...

True holographic movie is within grasp

Holographic movies, like the one R2D2 projected of Princess Leia in the Star Wars: A New Hope, have long been the province of science fiction, but for most of us, the extent of our experience with holograms may be the dime-sized stamps on our passports and credit cards. By using 'metasurface' materials that can manipulate light in ways that natural materials cannot, researchers reckon they have finally seen the light at the end of the tunnel for creating true holographic movies.

An Ode to Souvenir Pint Glasses, the Most Nostalgic Form of Movie Fandom

As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a Goonie.  To me, being a Goonie was better than being President of the United States. Even before I first wandered into the theater for an after-school job, I knew I wanted to be a part of them. It was there I belonged. To me, it meant being somebody in a neighborhood full of nobodies. They weren’t like anyone else. They did whatever they wanted in the Goon Docks. They’d double-park their bicycles in front of Lower Columbia Bowl and nobod...

Get an Up Close Look at Leia’s Lightsaber from ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’

For many, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker wasn’t exactly the thrilling conclusion to the Skywalker saga that fans had been waiting for. But if there’s one element of the finale that was satisfying even to those who disliked the movie overall, it was the flashback to Leia’s Jedi training with Luke Skywalker, where it was revealed that the Princess turned General had built her own lightsaber, making her a full-fledged Jedi. We only briefly see Leia’s lightsaber in the movie, but thankfully, a ne...
