New US Trailer for Dramedy 'Gaza Mon Amour' Starring Hiam Abbass

"The guy clearly likes you." Goldwyn Films has revealed the official US trailer for an indie dramedy from Palestine titled Gaza Mon Amour, the second feature by filmmakers Tarzan & Arab Nasser. It premiered at the 2020 Venice Film Festival last year, and it was submitted as Palestine's Best International Film entry for the 93rd Academy Awards (that were already held this year). Sixty-year-old fisherman Issa is secretly in love with Siham, a woman who works at the market with her daughter Le...

Vamp or Not? The Guardian

Recently I was having a conversation with my friend Leila about jubokko – a type of yōkai tree that amounts to a vampiric tree. Sometimes claimed of folkloric source, it may have been invented by GeGeGe no Kitaro creator Shigeru Mizuki. However, it is a tree (often found on the sites of battlefields) that has become yōkai by drinking the blood of the dead and now subsists on human blood. When cut it bleeds. The conversation turned to the 1990 William Friedkin directed film The Guardian – but I ...

Vamp or Not? Breeder

This is a 2020 Danish film directed by Jens Dahl and I suppose it sits within the Torture Porn sub-genre (kind of, as I’ll discuss it pulls short) and then veers off into revenge territory. However, there is a central premise around defying aging that made my friend Leila wonder if I had seen it and whether I thought it might be classifiable as Vamp. That, you will see, became a slightly tricky answer to find. The film starts with a woman, Mia (Sara Hjort Ditlevsen), riding her horse in an indo...

Fear Chamber – review

Directors: Jack Hill & Juan Ibáñez Release date: 1968 Contains spoilers I received a message from Leila asking whether I had ever considered this film as a vampire film – which I hadn’t. However I was immediately excited to realise that it might mean a further vampire film starring the late, great Boris Karloff (Isle of the Dead, Black Sabbath, House of Frankenstein, Mad Monster Party? & host of Thriller). Unfortunately it is not a great Swan Song, one of four Mexican movies that he was contrac...

Comment on dulce de leche chocoflan by Leila

This was yummy but the texture of the flan was less silky than I wanted. Looking at another recipe with the same ingredients and oven heat, it called for 1 hour cook time instead of 2! I would check on the cake at the 1 hour mark to see if it’s not already done.

Use of Tropes: Hocus Pocus

Hocus Pocus was a Hong Kong movie from 1984 that was directed by Yuet-Sang Chin. It involves a travelling Chinese opera company that gets more than it bargained for when it discovers that the theatre it is performing in is haunted. However, as always, things aren’t that simple. At first it is a (partially-)action comedy which sees young actor Kuei (Wei Tung) and his pals in the opera interacting and winding each other up. This includes things about ghosts – such as convincing one reprobate who ...

Christabel – review

Director: Alex Levy-Heller Release date: 2018 Contains spoilers The Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem Christabel is sometimes cited as a vampire piece. As far as I can tell this goes back to an interpretation by Arthur H. Nethercot (that he suggests was a theory that he espoused in 1939, though 1949 saw him publish the supposition) – though we must note that James B Twitchell also subscribes to this reading. I disagree. In no place in Christabel do we get the sucking of blood (accepting that such ...

Love Child review – refugee documentary finds love and warmth amid the misery

Filmed over six years in Turkey, this is a wonderful account of an Iranian family in exile desperately seeking asylumHere’s a documentary that gives off warmth like a radiator, generating huge amounts of empathy. I’m not sure I’ve seen another film that has so movingly put the audience in the shoes of a refugee: the emptiness of leaving everything behind, belonging to nowhere, having nothing. “You’re here, but you don’t exist,” says Leila, an English teacher who flees Iran at the start of the fi...

The self-regulation code that streaming services like Hotstar, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, ZEE5, and Sony LIV recently signed, “is a self-regulation code, it’s not a policy document that the government has introduced,” Tarun Katial, ZEE5 CEO and head of the Digital Entertainment Committee at the Internet and Mobile Association of India said. “We’re in constant deliberation with both MIB and MEITY. This is the sophomore album from Maryland‘s very own Maez301. Christiane Eda-Pierre, France’s First Black Opera Star, Dead At 88

Born in Martinique to an accomplished family (an aunt was the first black female student at the Sorbonne), she first made her mark in coloratura roles such as Leïla in The Pearl Fishers and the title role in Lakmé. She went on to have a stellar career in Paris and abroad, noted especially for Mozart, Rameau (she sang in the first modern revivals of several of his operas), and contemporary works (she created the role of the Angel in Messiaen’s Saint François d’Assise). – Barron’s (AFP)

Vamp or Not? Death Ship

B movie horror fare from 1980 and directed by Alvin Rakoff, this was, I guess, partly a naziploitation film and certainly was a strange beast of a premise with a ship that seemed to be alive. My friend Leila suggested this might be a Vamp movie in the same way that I Bought a Vampire Motorcycle and Upír z Feratu are also vampire movies – in that we have a vampiric machine at the heart of the film. Having settled down to watch this I became, as the film progressed, less convinced until close to ...

Honourable Mentions: 3-D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy

The Sex and zen films are Chinese softcore flicks that stand on the cusp of falling into the adult categorisation but, certainly in this case, actually fall on the side of bedroom farce (to a point). This outing was released in 2011 and was directed by Christopher Sun, watched in 2-D it was one of those releases where you could see shots gratuitously set up for 3-D that perhaps didn’t translate as well directorially without that technology. This was based loosely on the 17th century Chinese no...

Vamp or Not? Aragami

Aradami was brought to my attention By Leila, wanting my view as to whether the film fit into the vampire genre – she had erred to ‘no’. It is a 2003 film by Ryûhei Kitamura, who is known to TMtV for the Spear of Longinus but, to me, his film Versus was a benchmark production. This film was part of the Duel Project Kitamura and fellow director Yukihiko Tsutsumi had both finished their contributions to an anthology film and so they were challenged to create feature length films, featuring two ac...
