From fleeing Cambodia to helping build Mars rover, JPL engineer embodies ‘perseverance’

The bird-chirp alarm in Ny Sou Okon’s Pasadena home went off at 4 a.m. Thursday morning, July 30, signaling to her 8-year-old and 4-year-old sons that it was time to wake up. The day had come. The boys climbed out of bed and met their parents in the living room. Okon’s older son still squinted at the light. The family sat on the sofa and tuned into YouTube Live on the television above their fireplace. They set up a laptop on the coffee table, where Okon and her husband logged into a digital view...

Want downloaded author metadata to go from, say, C. S. Lew to CS Lew

I'd like downloaded author metadata to remove the spaces and dots in the initials of author names. For example, "C. S. Lewis" should automagically appear as "CS Lewis". "John Q. Smith" should autoconvert to "John Q Smith" I select a row, press Control-D, choose "Configure Download", click "Create Rules to transform author names", click "Add rule". But now I'm stuck. I'm guessing I should choose "matches regex pattern". But I don't know what to put in the next two blanks. Can someone please tell...

Nanosensor can alert a smartphone when plants are stressed

MIT engineers have developed a way to closely track how plants respond to stresses such as injury, infection, and light damage, using sensors made of carbon nanotubes. These sensors can be embedded in plant leaves, where they report on hydrogen peroxide signaling waves.Plants use hydrogen peroxide to communicate within their leaves, sending out a distress signal that stimulates leaf cells to produce compounds that will help them repair damage or fend off predators such as insects. The new sensor...

Veterans Day as a Time to Reflect

Funny how another person can make you think differently about something you thought you already understood. For me it’s my time in the military, the U.S. Air Force in the 1960s to be precise. When Jetwhine contributor Micah Engber mentioned a Veteran’s Day podcast a few months back, I wondered why. He’d never served. But his idea for telling a unique story kept bugging me until I realized there was a non-vet with something to share and me, a real vet … I had nothing. It took me a while to come t...

Giving Thanks – Embracing the Cross

Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday, filled with family, food, and football, a uniquely American celebration of our prosperity and all that we have to be thankful for. And let’s face it, with all the problems that we often bemoan, we have a lot to be thankful for, don’t we? We live in a great nation. Regardless of our political foibles, this is still a great place to live. If you are tempted to criticize America harshly, travel. I love Senegal, but I am always glad to set foot back in the USA. When it comes to cancer, there is no safe level for benzene, a component of the massive gas leak in Aliso Canyon

The issue of just how much benzene was released when 100,000 metric tons of methane spewed out of a pressurized gas field nearly three years ago has been playing out in court in recent weeks, as the effects of the potentially harmful chemical benzene have become a source of growing concern. At the heart of those concerns has been recent court testimony from May Lew, the engineer in charge of gas content and monitoring for SoCal Gas. Her expertise, and information on benzene, has come to the fore...

A key witness, after months of SoCal Gas’ efforts to block her testimony, is expected to tell the full story on toxic gas at Aliso Canyon

After nearly three years since the largest gas blowout in U.S.history, residents of Porter Ranch still worry whether their health will be compromised five, 10 or 20 years down the road after breathing in not just methane gas, but an array of toxic, often cancer-causing chemicals spewed from an underground gas storage facility in and around their suburban neighborhood. A key part of their quest is finding out what caused their nosebleeds, headaches, nausea and a few cases of cancer. One answer ma...
