Chucky Season 1 Episode 1 Recap & Analysis: Death by ‘Misadventure’

Diving into a franchise that has produced eight feature films certainly isn’t child’s play, but the latest adventure centered around everyone’s favorite homicidal doll has one thing going for it that its predecessor did not. Whereas Don Mancini, the writer for every other film in the series, wasn’t involved in the 2019 Child’s Play reboot, he’s back at the helm for Chucky’s first venture into television. As a result, this adaptation automatically benefits from the feeling that it stays true to t...

Summer Splash: What Is The Best Summer Watch? Quarter Finals — Aquadive Vs. Sinn

Comment on luxe butterscotch pudding by Lexy

Mozza in LA serves their butterscotch pudding dessert with rosemary shortbread I believe, I remember it was amazing. So I think I would skip the caramel and make a slightly salty rosemary shortbread cookie to go with it when I get around to making this. Looks amazing, thanks Deb.

Emojis Keep Teen Out of Jail–State v. DRC

Tomorrow is World Emoji Day (named because most calendar emojis depictions show July 17 on the calendar). To celebrate the power of emojis, I’m blogging a case where emojis helped a teen avoid jail. DRC and her mom were having a fight–which isn’t unusual for parents and teens, though this incident sounded a little more dramatic than the disagreements in my household. During the incident, DRC texted her friend Joshua the following thread (apologies for the kind of language I don’t normally condo...

Teen adoption from foster care: a story from a true “instant family”

USA (MNN) -- November is National Adoption Month in the United States, and it's no secret that venturing into the world of adoption introduces a lot of unknowns. But few journeys into the world of adoption are as complicated as adopting teenage siblings. These new family dynamics carry greater relational and conversational complexities than they would in cases of infant adoption or even child adoption. In some ways, they also present bigger questions for couples considering adoption. I...

No, You Can't Have It All—& That's Okay

We know what you’re thinking — I’m not even 35 yet, why should I be worrying about what’s going to happen when I’m 40, 45….ahem, 50. You’re going to say a pair of forty-something women frustrated with their career trajectories is just normal mid-life angst — nothing new.But is it? Maura, 47, has been an editor at some of the most well-regarded publications in New York, but these days she’s feeling the existential dread of working at a print publication at a time when she's constantly reminded t...

Comment on crispy sweet potato roast by Lexy

Deb, I am curious if you have tried doing this roast with the “slow roasted” method since you discovered that trick with sweet potatoes later, per your more recent posted Slow Roasted recipe. I’m thinking of using this slicing method and exact recipe only roasting covered with foil at 250 for four hours. I’m not as much after the crispness as I am the natural caramelization and appreciate this presentation. I will attempt to get some browning but not sure I could get them crispy cooking that slo...

Comment on strawberry shortcakes by Lexy

I realize that most of the comments on this thread are from nearly a decade ago (how is that possible!?), but I’m hoping someone (or Deb ;)) can tell me what I’m doing wrong. I’ve been making these for years but they always come out flat (too flat to slice in half) and I can never get them to brown well on the top. They’re delicious – so I will continue to make them – but they do not look like the photos at all. I make them exactly as directed (and I weigh my ingredients, so it’s not a precision...

Oaks Christian softball edges Agoura in dramatic comeback victory

WESTLAKE VILLAGE – It was wild. It was crazy. It was another classic Oaks Christian-Agoura softball showdown. Down to its last strike, Agoura scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning and appeared to be on the verge of a dramatic victory. Then in even more improbable fashion, Oaks Christian scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to steal a 5-4 Marmonte League victory Wednesday night as Katie Simonsgaard scampered home on a wild pitch for the winning run to send the host L...

Kids Court, the grand prize winner from Amazon’s developer contest, disappears from the Alexa Skills Store

What does winning the Alexa Skills Challenge earn you from Amazon? Apparently, in addition to the $20,000 Grand Prize, you might also have your skill yanked from the Amazon Skill Store without warning. At least, that’s what seems to have happened to the grand prize winner from the recent Alexa’s kids competition, Pretzel Labs. Its winning submission, a fun skill called “Kids Court” where parents and kids settle arguments together using Alexa, has disappeared from Amazon’s Skills store. The...

The lead singer of indie rock band Vampire Weekend, Ezra Koenig, is teaming up with actor/singer/Twitter personality extraordinaire Jaden Smith to create an anime series for Netflix. The One Mascara That Never Irritates My Sensitive Eyes

Hello, my name is Lexy, I'm a beauty editor, and I hate mascara. It's been this way for about five years, since my aha! realization that the source of my midday itching and irritation was not, in fact, due to my contact lenses, but to certain eye makeup. And don't even get me started on the crusty-yet-also-somehow-goopy black junk that accumulates in the inner corners of my eyes throughout the day after hitting the inky tube in the morning. (My non-scientific reasoning: Mascara makes tar-like go...

Comment on a really great pot of chickpeas by Lexy

These are SO delicious. I made them exactly as written, except I didn’t have sage on hand, so I used some bay leaves instead. I froze the broth in 16-oz deli containers, used the chickpeas that I needed for my recipe tonight (adding girth to a greek salad), and froze the remaining chickpeas in water in deli containers to thaw, throw into soups, or use at a moment’s notice. I love cooking that comes back to the basics of what makes food delicious, and this is definitely that. Thanks, Deb!

Q: Dear 100 Hour Board,If Jeff Goldbloom and J.J. Abrams had a child,Would that child look like Frère Rubik?-Hanklin A: Dear Mr. Noorlander, So, I thought this was Senator McDunn, since he confronted me about my Board identity really early on in the semester and as far as I knew he was the only one of all of us who knew. I emailed him to see, and I found something out: You are not Senator McDunn.  And now, I am curious.  Very, very curious.  Could you be Andy, falsely accused of crimes against...

Which Products Are Actually Worth The Money?

The ultimate beauty dilemma: when to save versus splurge. Is there really a difference between the $200 cream and the $20 one — aside from the gold, glass jar the first comes in? Who in the world is buying their black eyeliner pencil from Barneys when there are plenty of perfectly great ones at Duane Reade? Once you've fallen in love with Oribe, is it ever possible to go back to cheap shampoo? These are the questions that keep us up at night. As editors who are lucky enough to test beauty produc...

Comment on baked alaska + smitten kitchen turns 10! by Lexy

Congratulations on ten wonderful years! I’ve been a reader for probably the past 6 or 7 years—first intermittently as a middle school Spanish teacher, and now more consistently as a stay-at-home mom with young girls (my youngest daughter and Anna are three months apart). I feel like we’re close friends (I occasionally start conversations with my mother-in-law, “Have you made Deb’s…), but I guess it’s just my creepily one-sided adoration. I found out a few years ago that I am a quarter Jewish an...

Comment on my favorite brownies by Lexy

Normally I’m a Dutch-cocoa-only-thank-you-very-much kind of brownie girl, but these have converted me. I’ve made them twice in two weeks. They’re fudgy, yummy, textural perfection on their own, but also seem like they are basic enough to withstand any sort of mix-in/accoutrements you want to throw at them.
