United Methodist Judicial Council Upholds Traditional Plan

The Judicial Council of the United Methodist Church, meeting from April 23-26 in Evanston, Illinois, has decided that much of the so-called Traditional Plan, which the General Conference adopted at its most recent meeting in February, is constitutional. The United Methodist Church’s top court has found that while some provisions of the newly adopted Traditional Plan remain unconstitutional, the rest of the plan is valid as church law. That was the Judicial Council’s ruling on a requested review ...

The Trevor Project’s “Draw With Me” Documentary

Director Constantine Venetopoulos explores the role art played in Brendon Scholl's coming out process “So many people aren’t familiar with terms. They don’t even know what question to ask if they want to ask you a question,” Brendon Scholl‘s aunt Lynda Lopez says. It’s an important sentiment and merely the tip of an iceberg. Scholl and Lopez sit together, going through the teen’s art as well …

LGBTQ landmarks

From the very first queer magazine to significant protests for LGBTQ freedom of expression, there are a number of buildings around the United States that are still standing as testaments to the history of the LGBTQIA+ community. Though it seems now like a world so far out of our grasp, there was once a time when members of the queer community could not even assemble for a few beers in peace. In fact, in a not-so-distant past, “social justice” did not appear to be in the realm of possibility f...

Best LGBTQ bars and clubs in the US

Since the opening of Seattle’s The Double Header in 1933, American gay bars have propelled the country’s LGBTQIA community into the mainstream, nearly singlehandedly removing the stigma and replacing it with a feeling of pride and joy. As opposed to your typical run-of-the-mill bar or club, gay nightlife institutions have long been celebrated for their open-minded approach to fun, welcoming anyone over the age of 21 and encouraging them to express themselves in whatever ways they wish. Not on...

This CEO just raised millions from investors including Mark Cuban to build a better YouTube without ads

On Tuesday, an ad-free video-streaming platform called Portal was launched, competing with the likes of YouTube and Vimeo. On Portal, creators are paid directly by viewers who like what they watch — ideally meaning creators have to hustle less for views, and focus instead on building relationships with their audience.  Portal has raised $4.2 million in seed funding from investors including Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. Swerdlin decries the practice of "demonetization," and says that al...

Kyrsten Sinema wins Arizona Senate. Now Dems have 47 seats to GOP's 51.

Kyrsten Sinema, the apparent winner in Arizona's Senate race, is the first Democrat to win that vote for decades. She will become the first woman to ever represent Arizona in the U.S. Senate. She is also the first openly bisexual person ever elected to the U.S. Senate. That's a lot of firsts. Sinema's win was called late in the day by Associated Press on Monday November 12. Election day was Tuesday, November 6. Democrats now control 47 Senate seats. Republicans control 51. At least 2 race...

Help the Transgender Community Fight Harmful Policies

In a new memo, the Trump administration (through the Department of Health and Human Services) is attempting to “legally define gender as a biological condition determined by a person’s genitalia at birth”—an inherently transphobic act. This will strip trans, non-binary, and intersex people of many deserved rights. Of course, in times like this it’s crucial to speak, act and remain hopeful—and Teen Vogue has offered up a …

Academic freedom grifters rally around a new anti-transgender "disease"

Brown University researcher Lisa Littman has become the latest cause célèbre for academic freedom grifters after publishing an irresponsible article promoting "rapid-onset gender dysphoria," yet another disease model of gender identity and expression. Imagine a disease called "rapid-onset homosexuality" to understand the problem with "ROGD." Now all the usual suspects are defending her biased garbage. (more…)

Review: White Rabbit by Caleb Roehrig

White Rabbit by Caleb Roehrig was such an intensely stressful story that I felt myself tensing up while reading! Which is exactly what I want from a YA thriller, ok?! It scores all the points. It’s a twisty story of complicated families, messy broken hearts, drug gangs, arson, and (of course) murder. It’s definitely one … Continue reading Review: White Rabbit by Caleb Roehrig The post Review: White Rabbit by Caleb Roehrig appeared first on The Boomerang Books Blog.

Come Die with Me: Kelly Jensen on writing To See the Sun

Today we welcome Kelly Jensen to the blog with a guest post on writing her new LGBT novel, To See the Sun, out now from Riptide Publishing. I might not have been the only person in the audience for Interstellar watching the incoming tidal wave on Miller’s Planet and thinking—how could we make this place work? But I was probably one of a very small handful. Who wants to live in on a planet where not only is time severely dilated—to the point where a year on the surface would mean all of your fri...
