Denmark spent over $150,000 to rid a beach of debris and seaweed then dumped it in the water with a bulldozer

Plastic bag floating in the seawater with some seaweed. Getty Images/Stock photo A bulldozer in Denmark sweeps up seaweed and plastic from a beach and then releases it back into the water, according to video released by Danmarks Radio. Environmental experts who spoke with Danmarks Radio described the process as "completely idiotic." The process happens twice a week during the summer in Denmark. A Denmark municipality has spent more than $150,000 a year to remove debris and seaweed from a ...

This Wifi-Enabled Space Toilet for Cats Turned Me Into a Kitty Garbage Man, As God Intended

If you want most of the companionship that comes with a dog with less of the work, cats are great. They sleep most of the time, and a lot of the rest they’re inclined to spend by themselves. Walks are purely an optional affectation for the feline-obsessed, as is outdoor time (which many pet experts don’t recommend).…Read more...

AI surveillance cameras to fine British "litter louts"

The shaky legal credibility of CCTV evidence (and anger at the blatant profiteering by governments and contractors) has seen a fall in their use in U.S. cities. In Britain, though, the racket's in rude form and will soon target "litter louts" as well as drivers. — Read the rest

How to Make Your Cats Use the Freaking Litter Mat

Cats are great; constantly stepping on their litter is not. If you bought a litter-trapping mat only to watch your cats leap dramatically across it onto the floor you just swept every time they exit the litter box, you might wonder why you even bothered. Before you splurge on a robot vacuum, try turning the litter box…Read more...

How to Participate in World Clean-Up Day

Saturday is World Cleanup Day, and although we shouldn’t need a specific day designated to encouraging us to pick up the litter in our communities, 2020 has gifted us with a lot of other things to worry about. So not only is a reminder to pick up some garbage at the park is actually helpful right now, but it’s also …Read more...

Glastonbury bans plastic bottles from their festival

One of the world’s biggest festivals have pledged to eliminate plastic bottles this year over concerns about the levels of waste they cause as one festival. This year will see Glastonbury ban all single-use plastic bottles from being sold at the giant festival. The move is part of a larger bid to reduce their impact on the environment as it has become renowned for fields strewn with rubbish of tents, cans, bottles, and litter. The festival have reported that in 2017, visitors to Glaston...

Say goodbye to Hollywood

At least, goodbye to this pack of Hollywood chewing gum. Somebody tossed this empty pack alongside one of the roads in our neighborhood, probably from a car. If you've been to France you probably know that Hollywood is a common brand of gum here. I remember it from back in 1981. Yikes! According to the company's Facebook page, the brand was created in 1952. A frosty, yet empty, pack of strong mint-flavored chewing gum. Our neighborhood is active this weekend. The woman who owns the house next ...

European parliament supports the ban of single-use plastics

The EU adopted new plans last week to ban single-use plastic items like plates, straws, cutlery, balloon sticks and cotton buds — which make up over 70 percent of marine litter — by 2021. Under draft plans approved by Parliament, MEPs also added items to the banned list that contained products made of oxo-degradable plastics, like bags and fast-food containers made of expanded polystyrene. The ban also incorporates a plan for several other items that do not have an alternative, like single-use ...

A disgraceful cascade of trash follows a rare Yellowstone Ear Spring geyser eruption

While tourists flock from all corners of the globe to witness the Yellowstone National Park geysers such as famous Old Faithful, it is a small and relatively-unknown geyser catching international attention this time around. Ear Spring had been quiet for about 60 years until its recent September 15 eruption that featured a fountain of trash gushing from its depths. The natural phenomena generally emit steam and hot water, but this 30-foot surge included a plethora of oddities thrown out by touri...

A $16 pad to stop stray cat litter from migrating about the house

This wonderful litter trapping pad keeps litter from being scattered all over my home. I figured out my cat needed a 2nd litter box, and felt pretty smart. A few days later my home office was full of litter that had escaped the box on his paws and fur, I had forgotten to put a pad under the front of the box. I felt pretty silly. I tried a towel, because towels are pretty useful, but it didn't really help much. This rubber mat does the trick. Cat Litter Mat | XL Super Size | 35" x 23" via Am...

We Don't Even Live There Yet, But Humans Have Already Left Over 400,000 Pounds of Trash on the Moon

Plastic pollution in Hawaii

Follow Matador on Vimeo Follow Matador on YouTube THIS SHORT but eye-opening video created by Take 3, a not-for-profit organisation based in Sydney, Australia, is a sad reminder of the extend of the pastic pollution that is choking our planet. Urban Decay Litter, White Lie, 3rd Degree Vice Special Effects Lip Topcoats

Litter Urban Decay Litter Vice Special Effects Lip Topcoat ($18.00 for 0.16 fl. oz.) is has a clear base with micro-glitter that reflects between pink, lavender, and green. It was very subtle on bare lips, and as there was not much base color or finish, it looked like haphazardly applied glitter on its own, but the dry down emphasized the texture of my lips. On its own, it only lasted for an hour or less. When layered, it added subtle bits of glitter on the lips but seemed to go on a bit ...

#DontFeedTheLandfills in our parks

IT’S A SIMPLE yet profound concept: Don’t feed the landfills while visiting our national parks. We take for granted that since there are trash cans in the parks, it’s no big deal to fill them up with a bunch of our camping and picnicking rubbish. The problem is that trash has to go somewhere. Inevitably, it ends up in our ever-expanding landfills. So Subaru — the nation’s first zero-landfill automaker — and the National Parks Conservation Association have teamed up on an initiative called #Do...

How to piss off Colorado locals

Photo: Zach Dishner 1. Assume we all love to get stoned. I get it, Colorado legalized recreational use of marijuana in 2012. Clearly a vast majority of us believe weed to be on the same level as alcohol (in that is should be legal for those 21+ to consume), but that doesn’t mean we all do it. So when meeting a local, or chatting with your waiter, your cashier, etc, don’t immediately begin the conversation with a pot reference, or make jokes about how we’re all getting stoned, or inquire abou...

Plastic 'tsunami' trashes Hong Kong beaches

A deluge of garbage is overwhelming Hong Kong beaches. In what some refer to as a trash 'tsunami,' Hong Kong beaches have seen an estimated six to 10 times the usual amount of trash recently. And most of that garbage is plastic that won't easily decompose. Trash washing up on beaches isn't unheard of for Hong Kong, but this amount of trash is abnormal. Lantau Island's Cheung Sha Beach and Hong Kong Island's Stanley Beach have seen "tens of thousands of tons" of garbage washed ashore in area...

Bother someone from Mammoth Lakes

Photo: Amir Kuckovic 1. Ask for a local’s discount when you’re not a local. This is the best way to piss one of us off. No, the fact that you pay property taxes on your second home to Mono County doesn’t qualify you as a local. The local’s discount is there so parents who work two and a half jobs in order to pay their mortgage can afford to buy winter coats for their kids. The local’s discount is there so that an 18-year-old kid living off a lift operator’s wage can afford to take his girlfri...

This app makes recycling easy

Photo: Ralph Hockens Recycling is a huge part of preventing the pollution of our land and oceans , reducing our CO2 emissions, and saving the planet’s natural resources, so it should be something we thrive to do properly and consistently. However, we all know how difficult it can be to sort out our trash when we’re not at home. As a person who spends a great deal of time traipsing around, I can attest of the almost impossibility to recycle anything, anywhere, except our homes. I’m not saying ...
